I discovered a defensive tactic to defend against the AI. I left my frontline cities unguarded and created a 'wall' of troops on my border. I then created a gap in the wall of units and sent some troops to create a 'tunnel' in the gap. I then used artillery to destroy a road in enemy territory that led into the tunnel. Look at the screenshot attached to see what I did. At first, I doubted the AI would be stupid enough to go for the gap but they did.
Has anyone else done something like this? Do you think it would work if I had a larger border to defend? In the screenie, I used mech infantry. Would it work with weaker troops forming the wall like infantry or riflemen? Did the AI go for the tunnel because its the path of least resistance or was it because it calculated that rifles had no chance against MIs?
Edit: I tried the tactic again with Marines but the AI cavalry attacked them. However, when I built fortresses on the border, the Marines were not attacked
