Kalishnikov designed a great rifle, he was not a mass murderer. He came up with the design in World War II while recuperating in a hospital from wounds from fighting the Nazis. The purpose was to defend his country which is honorable.

The iconic AK-47 is simple, inexpensive and effective. In Afghanistan I have a nice 1960 AKM that still works fine even after 53 years.

First world guilt is a wonderful thing. It allows people who are already entitled to feel entitled to further self-importance, self-righteousness and snobbery. After all, they feel so much for the suffering peoples of the world. They voted for Kucinich, they're doing their part

To stick the blame on him is ridiculous in any case. The weapon was designed and fine tuned by dozens of other engineers and soldiers. Soviet propaganda only made him look like the sole actor that dreamed up everything because people like one-man-army heroes/inventors/whatever.

I don't know much about his history. I just figured he was the sole designer.

He's no John Browning (my real hero of gun design).

And yes I understand the irony of criticizing a Russian gun maker when I have a picture of a Russian with a gun in my avatar.

I still say guns are evil devices, and personally I would never design one even if I could. I'd design toys for children or something. As was mentioned above, the industrial revolution is as much to blame as anything.

Technological optimism v. pessimism is actually fairly interesting when people can get away from the gun issue and talk about it more generally.

Although they're inherently robust and reliable, they actually do jam and the rest you mention is true for most modern firearms.

He is not responsible for anything. If not Kalashnikov's AK-47, terrorists would use Mauser's or someone else's weapons.
