Hi everyone.
I used to play civ2/civ1 but havent started to play civ3 until recently. I play at monarch and thats fun and everything but after like 100 turns into the game ALL computer enemies start, without any reason (I havent done any atrocitys or unprovoked attacks), to attack me. They all form pacts with each other against me and send MASSES of troops to my bases, yes, I play 16 players on a huge map and all 16 even those at the other side of the map send everything they got. So, my question is if its supposed to be this way? I mean how fun is that when all enemies act like just 1 big one who attacks you? There should instead be conflicts between everyone, and u should be able to stay in peace or make an allianace with some comp. Not like this. This is stupid, its just like the final war in Orion after u have lost the election if u know that game.

Plz guys, give me a clue about this. Cya

Well, there's likely a few factors at work. There's far too many possible reasons that any single AI might attack you to guess at without a save, but beyond that, buying alliances against civs you're at war with is just smart diplomacy and indicative of good AI, not stupid. To prevent this from happening you should be getting MAs with neutral nations before your opponent does.

Possible reasons they attacked you:

-You had a resource/luxury they didn't have but they wanted
-You appeared to have a weak military
-They had a strong military
-They just wanted more land ;)

Even if you refuse a demand by them, one AI can declare war on you, then they get a Military Alliance, and more and more MAs. Try to get civs bordering your enemies into Military Alliances before they do, so that they will fight each other, and not you. It's always good to build up your military in cities that have nothing else to build.

I try to have at least one unit in my non-border cities and 2-3 (defensive) units on border cities (especially with stronger nations). Building walls around towns (size 6 pop or lower) or getting cities into size 7 or above gives you a defense bonus. If you keep trades active with many AIs, they are very much less likely to declare war on you. So, some rules;

1) Have a decent defensive force
2) Keep good relations with the AI - trade trade trade!
3) Give into AI demands if you think there is a possibility of a war you don't want

That's just the basics into preventing wars.

And no, it's not supposed to be this way - obviously there was a reason they declared war on you. The game isn't *that* random. :)

Well, it goes like this...
1) AI A declares war on you at random. Since it's random, it will most likely happen at some point. NB when I say "random", I mean it'll sneak attack you for reasons mentioned by other posters, or it'll demand stuff from you that you won't want to give it.
2) AI A makes a military alliance with AI B to go to war with you.
3) AI B takes the money he got from AI A and makes a military alliance with AI C against you.
4) AI C -> AI D etc. etc.
Add in a few mutual protection pacts and then you got most the world at war with you.

To stop steps 2 onwards from happening, you must do what punkbass2000 advises and break the chain by making neutral countries side with you. Don't do it in exchange for techs or large sums of money, however, as your allies will still sign a military alliance with any enemies of yours that you didn't make them declare war upon, quite easily.

I have found that the main reason that an AI attacks is that he is stronger than you. Make sure you are the strong one with the allies.

I have found that if you don't sign allies, your enemy will. Also, AIs are more willing to join a dogplie than to resist one.

Not exactly. I played a lot of Deity 20k trials recently, thus I had only a few cities (no Settlers from the capital); nevertheless, the AI never declared. Sure, they made demands, but who cares about small change.

The AI will declare when they are stronger (i.e. more units), but smaller.
Big isn't always beautiful...

keep a good reputation and trade a lot to keep attitude up. then when they declare war anyway ...

immediately, and i mean immediately check out the nations around you on your F4 screen and make alliances with as many of them as possible against the aggressor. pay whatever they demand for it.

if you cant afford to buy even one ally you are in big trouble. for that reason keeping a cash reserve can be every bit as important as keeping a powerful military, and it tends to be more achievable.

after acquiring a couple allies sit tight in your own territory fending off invaders but not leaving your territory. the goal here is to preserve as many troops as possible for the counterattack which should not be done until the enemy has his field troops eliminated by your allies. why do the dirty work? when your enemy has few troops left anywhere besides inside his cities go for the spoils. if you are too weak to claim many spoils then make settlers and grab the gleanings left behind which basically means settling between cities that have been conquered and have their culture areas squashed back down to 9 squares.

Thx for the replies guys.
This happend to me the first 4/5 games...
On my current game the computers act like normal.
Dont know what the problem was but looks like it is solved.

very often 1 or 2 are enough
since those 2 will draw the rest with them:)
well not allways but often ..babylon did in all my games

Whenever i get sneaked up upon; i instantly get all the relevant civs (and sometimes a few extras) with me on MA's... all in the same turn. and then, if they're far away, i'll only send a few fast units to harass the enemy and, more important, oversee the dogpile breaking them down. ...sure it drags out at least 20 turns of war. But you only really have to attack and kill 1 unit to keep your allies happy, and as long as the enemy and you are not neighbors you're safe and free too send whatever small forces you like to commit enjoyable hit and run raids, or taking that spicy island you allways wanted.
