All I wanted was Iron. Now I'm covered with Egyptian blood

Do you guys ever start a war just because the enemy has that primo city spot that you wanted?

I'm in a game now as the Romans. After an early warrior gambit takeout of the Japanese, I was fighting to gain my first couple of techs in order to build Legions. Finally I got Iron Working, but unfortunately there was no iron in my area. A quick scan to the north revealed that there was a prime city location nearby. Two wheat, iron, and fish off of the coast. I sent a settler up there, but was too late. The Egyptians got there first.

As is unusual for me, I began making archers by the dozen. Soon I was taking Egyptian cities left and right. Well, that's an exageration - there were only five cities. I pulled the settler back lest he be captured. After the quick war I sent the settler in again, only to be beaten once again - this time by the English. Knowing that the English have no useful unique unit, I quickly eliminated the city. A couple of turns later, Elizabeth asked for peace and offered a tech. I took it, built my city, and began making Legions.

Long story...less long, soon all of England was mine. While my legions were still wiping the blood from their short-swords, I finally made contact with civilizations from foreign lands (the English had the Lighthouse which, upon capture, helped me to other continents).

The Germans were four squares away, and just dropped off a settler in my lands (Stuttgart). This annoyed me, as did the Russian incursion which was quickly terminated. I knew that they were too far away to mount any serious invasion of my lands.

I built six galleys and loaded them up with twelve legions. The Germans, still without Pikemen, were easy pickings, although every time I opened up culture space in their lands, the Aztecs planted a city. Soon the Germans were all but eliminated. They had one city that they had annoyingly built far away.

The Aztecs are in second place and are my most dangerous enemy. I now have peace with the Germans - they just have that one city that will take a while to get to, so I figured I'd make peace for my Republic while waiting.

I have knights now, and nobody else does.

So, two questions. Has anybody ever had a situation that escalated like this? All I wanted was the Iron deposits, and it resulted in my taking out two civilizations.

And have you ever warred so much early on that you couldn't stop? I didn't have to start the war with the Germans. Indeed, Stuttgart cultured over to me in about ten turns. But I knew that they only had spearmen in their cities, so I took advantage of it. Next will come the Aztecs, I hope. Their UU has already passed. Would you guys take them out or try to live in peace and harmony?

Just go with your gut. When using a Militaristic civ it makes sense not to let that trait go to waste, don't you agree?

Sigh, this always happens with me. (Although I'm only in my 4th game, so perhaps always is misleading). I need a resource, I build up a military, I take the resource, I have all these extra offensive units I'm paying upkeep on...

Good point. You have the military, why not use it? This is just not my familiar way of playing. I'm usually more peaceful.

Once, I was playing on a huge map, with just three civs. I needed Rubber in order to upgrade to Infantry, lest those marauding Mongols got angrier at me. The Americans had some near them, and I sent a galleon all the way around the world to get a city set up near it. Too late, they beat me to it. Long story short, I got the rubber in exchange for a three-way war against the Americans AND the Mongols. Don't know why the Mongols declared war against us both, but I digress. . . . This stuff happens way too often for me. But it keeps the tanks from rusting. :tank:

Usually, once I get involved in a war, I plan on not looking back. For one, it's too much fun to crush those slimy AI's! And then it becomes an addiction, and as supreme leader of my people, I must have more of my drug -> conquest!!

In practical game terms though, it is easier to just keep on warring once you get going because usually a war sours the AI's opinion of you, devours lots of resources on military units, and then I find it becomes harder to switch back to a more "peaceful" type government like Democracy or Republic (without Women's Suffrage) without having at least one other AI player trying to take advantage of your Anarchy and attacking you.

I played a game on a tiny map once just to see what it was like. I started out attacking my neighbors just to get horses and wound up taking out the whole world before 1000 AD. That was when I figured it was time to stop playing Chieftain level. :)

I'm fairly new to the game...only in my 3rd game and have lost the first two miserably as I'm trying to learn all the ins and outs of the game. However, one thing I've noticed is it's not hard for a war to get out of hand and even spark further wars between other civs. Just go for it as long as you have the advantage.

Otherwise it may be you on the other end of the situation when the Aztecs build up their army.

Ahh war. I am in a cheiftan game in the industry age.I just went commy and no one else has it. MY opp is

Carthrage
Ottomans
Egypt
Romans
Korea
America (dead)

I hate war. But i had to turn EVERY SINGLE civ against the americans. The built a town right in the center of my teritry and took over my source of iron saltpeter AND horses. SOB's. So i killed them off and captured their cites. (kinda sucks cause all fo them are in the middle fo a jungle and uranium grows in jungle so i dotn want to cut it down.) BTW how do i move my captal? IT got moved form athens (im greece)

My FP and capital are RIGHT next to each other so i lose liek 700 godl to couption on the other side of my empire.

Now egypt hates me and i tried ot kill her but nope. BAH! I all started over a few resources...... War is evil.... WAIT! Here is a fun game. Take america using the 'real' world secario and put in 6 arabs! Name them taliban binladen ect. Then nuke them! I dont get why we havent doen it already. I mena lets just get WWIII going and get it over with. The sooner that happens the sooner the secodn comign happens. But greed is evil. I figured out NOT to go screw with the americans if they got MPP with egypt and egypt coudl crush you.

I was on a Contienint(sp) with five other civs in the early middle ages. The Aztecs, who didn't even border me, declared war so i signed a MA with France and Germany. Germany backed out after eleven turns right when I was beginning to get the upper hand. After getting rid of the Aztecs, I got even with Germany. Before they were destroyed, the Gemans got Japan (weak) and China (really strong and ticked off at me) against me. France stayed by my side, and now there are three civs left. Me, France, and weakened China. All this because of the stupid Aztecs.

Sure I have. You got lucky though - you won the wars! I've gotten into situations over one city, or one tile, where I end up having a bunch of civs breathing down my neck. The war becomes a Vietnam-esque quagmire - I can't break the stalemate, but the short term goal of that one city is so close.

My advice if you get into a situation like this - fight on! I was once playing a game where I was America, and Japan was the only civ left on the continent. We were about the same size. They had saltpeter, which I needed. (I wanted to conquer them anyway.) I went in with not enough troops, conquered cities, but was always beaten back. After about 5 pushes for their capital that were all repulsed, I was ready to sign for peace. I tried one final time, with insufficient troops. My knights had some miraculous victories against their Samurai, and I ended up destroying them.

The moral: Go all out or not at all. ;)

 That reminds me of a game I did. It was on a Tiny archipelago map, three other civs. Ended up we were all on one island - I took all of them with 2 warriors, before got my second city!

I usually go to war against everyone on my continent early. If there's still a ressource lacking, I often scout for an enemy city with that ressource on a different continent and lead a short war for that city. Usually this city becomes the staging place for invasion later in the game.

You know, I really like culture and all that in Civ, I would even call myself a builder, but it always ends up with "them or me". So why not get over with close civs early. :D

It doesn't matter if you cut down the jungle, any resources still stay there. I once cleared jungle around a city and, when I got Steam Power, discovered I'd got a coal sitting in what was now grassland. Mined that sucker real fast. :D

BTW how do i move my captal?

Build a palace in a different city. :king:

To keep everyone updated:
I killed off the Germans and eliminated all of the Aztec incurrsions into previously German lands. I also pushed the Aztecs back past a choke point that I could easily defend.

I was winning - and by far. Then, for no explained reason, the Iroquois attacked me.They had a good military, but nowhere near as good as mine. They planted one rider (or whatever their UU is) which was easily eliminated. I countered, thinking that if they're just sending over one rider they must be pretty weak at home. Not the case - they had Riflemen even before I did. Since I hadn't lost anything, I just made peace.

It's kind of curious, though. Why on earth would the Iroquois start a war with me?
