I have Civ2 Gold (the one with the original game + the 2 add-ons + Multiplayer) and all other CIVs hate me.
It's not some sort of "They hate you because you treated the bad in the past" They simply hate me. It doesn't matter if Im playing a scenario or a free game, they even always hate me on the lowest difficulty.
I also have the original CIV, which I bought 1996, when it was new, and in that version it's OK, Civs only hate me if I hit them.
Please tell me if there's anything I can do, because it's fraustrating in the WW2-Scenario playing the french and being killed by the Allied - Axis - Russian - Neutral - Spanish - Turk ALLIANCE

Simple answer: nobody likes the French

Yeah. That always happens to me too. I dunno how to prevent it or anything. All I know is to weaken the enemy until they're no longer of any threat. Don't hold you punches or hesitate. It always works for me. Even in Democracy, so I can keep my bigger priorities going.

I distinctly remember playing Civ I in 1992 so if you only got it in 1996 then you were missing out on many years of fun with simple graphics. When you get to the stage that everyone hates you, you must be doing something right, surely. If you are trying to play a peaceful game then they will be jealous of you, but you probably shouldn't have chosen the WWII scenario if you play peacefully. If not, they will be angry because you've attacked them or broken alliances or are allied with one of their enemies. There isn't a lot you can do once they all hate you short of giving away your entire treasury and all your tech, but this does not guarantee that they will not start to hate you again next turn. The AI's like that.

Are there any scenarios you can play peacefully? The vast majority are based around conflict, whether historical or imaginary.

Yes, it definitely means you are doing something right. The only time a neighboring Civ will be nice to you is

1. It's only about 30 seconds after you've given them something of value, or
2. You're a bottom-of-the-barrel Civ who poses no threat to any of the other Civ; i.e., you're losing the game very badly.

Beyond these, everyone else will dislike you. The more they hate you, the better you're doing!

It seems to me that sometimes I can manipulate the game a little. I think that being in first place leads to far more hatred from others than being in second place. Therefore, as long as things are reasonably competitive, I avoid actually taking the lead.

This does not work, of course, in areas like technology and area controlled. However, I avoid saving up a lot of cash, and I try to avoid an overly large standing army.

Of course, if you are clearly dominant, there's no hiding it, and the AI players are behaving just as human players would behave -- looking for a chance to win by knocking down the leader.

The frnce sunk a ship in my contry in real life and worst thing is they got away with it so every game i destroy them and i dont cear if it ant worth the efoort.

Dam french us New Zealanders will get ya back!

Do you know the first thing they teach the French enlisted in Basic Training? How to raise their hands above their head and say "I Surrrender" in 6 languages. The officers are taught to ask a question, "How can I collaborate?".

Well, OK I'm joking for the present day French. But lots of them collaborated with the Nazis in WW II. Plus, the French actually *attacked* the Allies for 3 days in North Africa, when the Allies began Operation Torch (the Invasion of Africa in WW II). Today, lots of French are buried next to the Allies (mainly Americans and British) that they killed on behalf of their "ally", Nazi German. If the Germans couldn't kill the Allies, then I guess teh French figured they'd do it for them. But of course, after a few hours, the French saw which way the winds were blowing, and exercised their first Military training.... "I Surrender"... Bastards. No offense.
