Does anybody have tricks for getting powerful neighbors to ally with you? AI powerful nations that is... I always have a hard time and have to bribe the suckers with A LOT a money.

I always make sure i get the UN wonder that usually does the trick. When they communicate with you they have to sign an alliance.

UN forces a peace treaty not an alliance. Two very different beasts indeed. To answer your question lildude you haven't really got much chance, you can try showering them with gifts and hope that works but don't get your hopes up. The others civs should NEVER get as powerful as you.

Well, 1st of all think WHY you need an alliance:
1) need their map - give them techs until their attitude towards you improves and then they'll exchange
2) need to cross their teritory - just attack them and take everything they've got.

In fact I think that Alliances are quite useless most of the time.

Just one more reason why MP is better than AI...an alliance means nothing against an AI, whereas MP allows alliances, friendships, etc...

You shouldn't have any trouble at all getting an alliance or two early in the game. I often do this just for better tech-trading or so I can concentrate on another civ for a few turns. Alliances are also good for breaking peace treaties under democracy: if you're allied with Civ A, and they're at war with Civ B, but the Senate forced a peace treaty between you and Civ B, just meet the Civ A emissary and they'll 'demand' that you break the treaty with Civ B. Works every time.
