Now that we have had 3 full Civs (plus several expansion packs) since Alpha Centauri came out, can we get Firaxis to please make Alpha Centauri II? (or at least an Alpha Centauri II expansion for Civ V, which would be awesome). Dont get me wrong as I absolutely love Civ as well but I have had some good Civ fixes with the last two installments but my alpha centauri fix (and building ocean city empires) has been left to a game from 1998. Granted many of the innovations of AC didn't show up until Civ IV as far as the Civ series is concerned, I want hexagonal tiles, modern graphics, better AI and Diplomacy, better border management, more flexible and important resource system etc. I have been pining for Alpha Centauri II for a decade now thinking that how could they not make a sequel to the greatest 4x game ever. Yet they continue not to..

I wish they would. However, I bet with enough dedicated hands we could do it ourselves. It wouldnt be as elaborate as all the Civs, but, D*** IT I WANT A NEW AC!

The rights for Alpha Centauri are owned by EA. Sid would have to pay a lot of money to obtain the rights to a sequel of a game that didn't sell very well (despite glowing reviews), and that was mainly the brainchild of Brian Reynolds, who left Firaxis shortly after and now creates facebook games for Zynga. I'd like to see a sequel too, but I don't hold my breath. On top of that, I'm not entirely convinced that the current team at Firaxis could actually match the quality of the original.

Go to the Firaxis website and let the Firaxis people know you are interested in a science fiction themed Civ 5 expansion. While it may not say Alpha Centauri due to legal problems, it is probably something they can do and the closest we can get to AC 2.

I'd buy it as long as it didn't go the Civ V route.

I'll buy it if it gets made, no strings attached (well if it cost 200 dollars... i'll think hard about it)

Actually, it looks like they might be looking into it:

I think thats a little bit of a stretch, given what Meier said:

About Alpha Centauri 2 Sid Meier says: “That is certainly a game that we had a lot of fun making, an interesting evolution of the Civilization approach. We appreciate your enjoyment of the game and we’ll put that on the list of games we ought to do.

I believe I've heard him say things like this in the past. Also Firaxis doesn't own the rights to AC (EA does), so it'd have to be a different sci-fi setting.

It would be interesting to see what they would redesign technology-wise if they were to make a second version. I know with each new Civ, they have had to rework the technology trees, and add a lot of detail to some of the steps between the Civ 1 techs. I would love to see them forcast new technologies (lots of carbon-tech) given the advances over the last many years.

I would love a SMAC sequel, but I fear such desires will remain as unfulfilled as a Jello Biafra presidency and a third season of Twin Peaks.

From whence would the narrative pick up?

Question: What would be an appropriate subtitle for SMAC II?

SMAC II: SMAC Attack
SMAC II: Mindworms Ate My Baby!
SMAC II: Sid Meier’s Aleutian Crumpet

Does Firaxis even have the talent anymore to do a AC sequel justice? I thought they only had a skeleton crew left at this point.

Brian Reynolds is apparently making cell phone / facebook games now? Probably easy money. Bill Gates needs to give that man his own studio or something.
