The Short Version

Sister Miriam has captured Aki Zeta 5, and is conducting a digital detox on our favorite cyborg on a secluded asteroid (read: low gravity environment). Provost Zakarov has hired you, a Data Angel specializing in locating and retrieving missing artifacts, to rescue Aki Zeta from her prison on this asteroid.

The Long Version
"Have you ever lost someone you loved?".

You know better than to reveal personal information to a client, so you lie, "no".

The Provost nods, accepting your answer at face value, before continuing, "she is the culmination of everything I have strived for, a composite creation embodying all of the superior attributes of our species". Zhakarov pauses, as if wanting to say more, before finally simply saying, "and now she is gone".

"You said that there were previous iterations of this cyborg entity - why not just continue your work on one of these?".

Zhakarov appears distressed for a moment before waving a hand dismissively, "they weren't.... viable".

You decide not to inquire further as to the fate of the Aki Zetas 1 through 4. Instead, you bring the conversation back to the matter at hand, "how did this cyborg escape your facility in the first place?".

Zhakarov brightens at this, "Because she is an adept with digital interfaces!". He holds up one hand for emphasis, "if you or I were to lose our hand, we would have a prosthetic grafted on, and we would then need to learn how to use this new appendage".

You nod in response, "seems logical".

"Ah, but with Aki Zeta there is no learning curve - the appendages we grafted onto her were seamlessly accepted by her, and she immediately optimized them for her own personal use. It was during one of these trials we believe she was able to use her cybernetic enhancements to interface with the host computer system, and was able to make good her escape".

You could tell Zhakarov was proud of what his child prodigy had been able to accomplish against his computer network's firewalls, however having been able to easily bypass the Provost's security measures yourself you decide not to pass judgment too quickly, "and you want me to locate her and return her to you".

The Provost nods, "she is out there somewhere all by herself, an innocent amongst the wolves of our species".

"Right", you reply flatly. Privately you know that this cyborg creature is almost certainly getting help from someone, and even though the galaxy is big, the number of places she could be hiding are limited, "give me a standard month to locate her, and then I will contact you with what I need".

Zhakarov is effuse with his gratitude, "of course - my resources are at your disposal!".

The universe is immense, but you have to hand it to the humans communications net in that it is exceptionally good at putting this universe at your fingertips. You send out your stealth scents into the net and sit back and wait, working on other projects while you let the net and your bots do the heavy lifting. Within a standard week you've caught the scent via some innocuous Believers communications. Your blood quickens - whenever the Believers are involved it is always a dicey affair, however theirs is more a defensive posturing when it comes to the net, and you have a full suite of tools honed over the generations to gently pry the information from them. Soon you've got an auto-entity positioned within the Believer hierarchy who is able to elicit the necessary information from a rejoiceful celebrant: your quarry is a guest at a new Believer colony on an inhabitable asteroid.

You don't bother consulting the Provost regarding supplies - you just use some of your tools to "acquire" the necessary resources from a University account. You crack your knuckles and bend over your keyboard - it is time to go to work: you have one job, and that is to capture the errant cyborg, and if necessary drag her kicking and screaming back to Provost Zhakarov.

Directions
1) In your "scenarios" subdirectory create a folder called "Cntl Esc F8", and download and unzip the attached files into it.
2) Start up Alien Crossfire, then select "Scenario", "Play Scenario", and then
select the scenario "Cnt Esc F8". The game is set up to allow you to choose your own difficulty level, and will automatically load the Data Angels first turn.

Enjoy!

In honor of Chaos Theory: RIP my old friend - you are not forgotten! I hope you look down upon this, and that it makes you smile.

In Defense of All that is Holy!
In response to Devine direction from the Protector High Priest, the Progenitor Faithful activated Manifold Ten, and then awaited word from their brethren across the cosmos and how their corresponding Manifolds had fared in their attempt to contact the Devine Creator. However days then dragged into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years, and still no contact from their far-flung Progenitor brethren. Finally the Protector ordered the People into stasis, to await the day of the reawakening of the Progenitor people. The Protector himself would assume the throne of the Manifold Ten and stand guard over the people while they slept the eons away.

Protector Jaa'hroooon settled himself into the Prayer Seat located within the Great Communal Hall and sent a command to Manifold Ten to envelope the throne room in a partial stasis field. Within the bubble of slowed time Jaa'hroooon used the powers of the Manifold to project his senses out amongst the stars, searching for any sign of his People's return. Ages swept by in the blink of an eye, and as the slowed time continued to progress Jaa'hroooon watched branch after branch of the galactic arms slowly march across the sky, while individual stars dramatically flared and died, their lives spent . And still Jaa'hroooon sat upon the throne, communing with the Manifold while he patiently waited for word from his People.

And suddenly it was real-time again! Jaa'hroooon had given the Manifold orders to immediately stop the stasis if it detected an imminent threat, and it appeared that threshold had been met. Jaa'hroooon allowed his senses to be directed by the Manifold to several tiny specks of light descending through the planetoids thin atmosphere. The Manifold began correlating data and projecting images directly into Jaa'hroooon's mind, and from their descent Jaa'hroooon could tell the specks were artificial in nature. Using the Manifold's probing abilities Jaa'hroooon reached within each of the vessels to probe the minds of those that would dare intrude upon the holy ground that was Manifold Ten, and as Jaa'hroooon sifted the uncomplex minds of the heathen aliens he sensed simple, barbaric drives of greed and unfettered hatred towards his species. And Jaa'hroooon realized with a start that they knew of other Progenitors! Jaa'hroooon looked forward to extracting knowledge from these creatures regarding the fate of his People amongst the stars, and why these primitive creatures hated Progenitor so deeply! Jaa'hroooon had sensed enough and broke contact. It was time to wake the people and prepare them for battle...

Objectives: destroy all of the alien (read: Human) invaders of Manifold 10! And extra special bonus points if Manifold 10 is still operational at the end of the game. :)

Many thanx for wgabrie for the artwork!

Directions:

1. In your scenarios subdirectory create a new subdirectory called "X", and download and unzip the attached files into it.

2. Start Alien Crossfire, then select Scenario, Play Scenario, and load "X". The game will then let you choose the difficulty level you wish to play.

Enjoy! :)

Low-Grav alphax.txt Change Log

The way I've organized this is by the sections of the alphax.txt, so if you open the file (I use Word Pad) you can search on the key word and follow along.

#RULES
- Movement rate along roads changed from 3 to 4. Rationale: lower gravity increases movement. Also this assists the AI in that they can more quickly congregate units at threatened points in their empire.

- Max artillery range changed from 2 to 4. Rationale: lower gravity increases artillery distance. The AI will use this on occasion. Forewarned is forearmed in this case! (Note: you will need Scient's patch or better, as this does not work in the base game).

- Max airdrop decreased from 8 to 6. Rationale: flying around a battlefield is exponentially more dangerous than for planet or sea-bound military units, as drop units are exposed to a larger field of enemy units while airborne. In a low grav environment these dangers are compounded even moreso: from battle damage, malfunction, or just plain inexperience while airborne, a drop trooper can literally reach escape velocity much more easily and be lost forever in the depths of space. Thus the decision has been made to lessen the strength and duration of a drop pod's thrusters in low grav environments.

- Intrinsic base defense increased from 25 to 40. Rationale: benefits the AIs as they are typically on the defensive.

#RESOURCE INFO
- Boreholes changed to have a -2 nutrient intake. Rationale: simulates the horrid conditions workers face while slaving away in the boreholes (i.e. this "fits" with the darker theme present throughout Alpha Centauri).

#CHASSIS
- Infantry movement changed from 1 to 2, Speeder changed from 2 to 3, and Hovertanks changed from 3 to 4. Rationale: lower gravity increases movement.
- Hovertank chassis now available at Monopole Magnets. Rationale: with the decreased gravity hovertanks become available more quickly.

- Needlejets and copter chassis disabled. Rationale: the thin atmosphere of a moon or small planetoid is not dense enough to support roto nor winged aircraft.

- Missile chassis movement decreased to 8. Rationale: similar to drop pods, missiles face a greater visibility and threat matrix while flying through the air, especially with continually being confronted with the dangers that lie just over the near-horizon as the missiles transit towards their targets. Thus the decision has been made to decrease their distance, effectively telling commanders "use missiles wisely".
- Missile chassis is now available at Doctrine: Air Power. Rationale: with the decreased gravity rockets become available more quickly.

#WEAPONS
- Conventional Payload available at DocAir. Rationale: with the decreased gravity rockets become available more quickly.

- Planet Buster has been disabled. Rationale: on smaller moons or planetoids the detonation(s) of planet busters are actually significant enough to change the trajectory/ orbits of these bodies, and so are strictly prohibited from use.

#ABILITIES
- Air Superiority disabled. Rationale: not needed since there are no aircraft in this game.

- AAA Tracking: moved to DocAir. Rationale: need to start building units ASAP that can defend against missiles!

#UNITS
- Crawler has been removed from this section – you will have to prototype your first crawler yourself. Rationale: crawlers are overpowered human exploits, so this is in a small way benefiting the AIs.

- There are several new units available to build. I’d suggest reviewing them to get a feel for what you will be facing in this game. Of note are the following:

A) Missile Frigate available at DocAir

B) Drop Trooper Mk1 available at DocAir

C) Chaos Battletank available at Fusion

D) The Battle Ogre Mk3 has been replaced by a "Drop Re-entry Assault Carrier - armored" (or "DRACa Mk3"), which is a missile troop transport. Still haven't figured out where to place this, but right now I'm thinking it is going to replace the Planet Buster.

E) Seawolf Attack Submarine available at Superconductor

F) Missile Mk1 available at DocAir

G) Resonance Probe available at Field Modulation

#FACILITIES

- Virtual World moved to Social Psycholoy. Rationale: watering down the beeline to Industrial Autmation.

- Cloudbase Academy: moved to Monopole Magnets. Rationale: watering down the beeline to MMI.

"Hello there, would you like to colonize a world with me?".

You can't believe your eyes -The Sid Meier is asking you to colonize a world with him! You stand there dumbfounded looking at the vidscreen for a second before responding, "yes, yes, absolutely yes!".

Sid smiles, nods, then says "The shuttle leaves docking bay 9 in an hour. Be on it". The line goes dead.

You immediately send out a communique to your underlings outlining the plan, then jump on packing. Twice you trip over half-packed suitcases, but you make it out the door and to the holding pen just in the nick of time. In the few spare seconds you have you check your pockets to ensure you didn't forget anything: yup, the datapad with Sid's comlink is secure in your front pocket, along with an EC chip with enough credits to buy an additional supply unit for your Faction. You start to run down the pre-boarding checklist when the bay's loading lights flash from green to red indicating the gates will open any second now, and suddenly for some reason you get a dark epiphany in the bottom of your stomach: Sid is a consummate gamer, so why in the universe would he invite you of all people? Was it because he'd seen your exceptional schooling marks as well as what you'd accomplished since entering the workforce, or what if the real reason he invited you was because he sees you as an easy mark?

The loading siren blares and immediately the gates swing open. The crush of humanity, eager for a better life on one of the colony worlds, surges forward, and your carried along like a stick in the current. There is no turning back now, the die is cast, and your fate awaits you on some planet you'd never even heard of just an hour before....

Directions:

1. In your scenarios subdirectory create a new subdirectory called "Sid_n_Me", and download and unzip the attached files into it.

2. Start Alien Crossfire, then select Scenario, Play Scenario, and load "Sid_n_Me". The game will load with you as the Peace Keepers, and then will let you choose the difficulty level you wish to play.

Note that you start the game with Sid's comlink, and while he will talk to you, be forewarned he is a wily gaming veteran, so buyer beware!

Enjoy! :)

Note that because this game occurs on a different world, then the rules for this game are different. There are many different units in this game, and many different tweaks to the Technology Tree: it is highly advisable you consult the Datalinks once in game so as to ensure you understand the Technology Tree and associated beelines!

Scenario Name: Heah You Kids Get Off My Planet!
SMAC/ SMAX: SMAX
Author: Darsnan
Date of original posting: 4/13/19
Original host site: CFC

Foreword: Alpha Centauri was never meant to be played as the 8th Faction. As such I've had to make a lot of allowances in this game, as well issue a lot of warnings to the player: these are documented below and should be reviewed before starting the game.

Premise

A planet drifts through the void, endlessly circling its primary. Sometimes a companion star encroaches, adding its light to the circling worlds, only to slowly drift deeper into space once more. Millennia turn to eons, and eons to epochs, and still the planet continues its endless journey. Until one day one of the lesser creatures of this world encounters something that is different. The creature stalks the strange craft, and as its kind had been primordially taught to do, it attacked and captured the strange craft. Having accomplished the task its primeval drive had been programmed to do, the creature wasn’t sure how to proceed, until a voice it had never heard before but instantly recognized spoke, “bring it to Me”.

You are Eywa, all knowing, all seeing, and master of this world. As the lesser creature you had created eons ago escorted the strange craft back to you, you reach out to probe the strange minds within: at first you thought it was the return of the false prophets who had long ago claimed to be your creators, but upon closer examination these beings are different, and if anything even more primitive. As the craft nears you notice a lot of the creatures on the strange craft have succumbed to the fungus your minion used to commandeer their minds with: some you can barely recognize the outlines of their former bodies, the fungus having completely absorbed them. However one of the strange creatures seems less effected by the fungus than the others, so you sift through the creatures memories, and find they are from a world ruined by its kind’s greed and recklessness towards the cradle of their birth. You query the creature, “you would do the same to this world?”.

“Yes”, the creature’s fungus-addled brain answers honestly.

“No”, you reply, “this will not happen on My world”.

Objective: you are Eywa, and your mission is to rid Planet of the blight that is Humanity.

Game Settings

- Small Map.

- Abundant Native Lifeforms selected.

- Difficulty Level: Librarian.

- Planetary Council has been disabled due to a bug causing crashes.

- No Colony Pods or Seabases can be built.

- Intense Rivalry selected.

- Blind Research selected.

- Tech Stagnation is on.

- Game is played in Editor mode due to a graphics bug in regular mode.

Other Observations

- Cities belonging to the 8th Faction can only produce one unit, called a Wraith. Trying to change production in cities belonging to the 8th Faction crashes the game.

- Cities belonging to the 8th Faction do accrue ECs: these cannot be used to rush units, but can be used for probe actions.

- The Headquarters building will need to be disabled in your alphax.txt file, otherwise you cannot kill the defenders within cities containing Headquarters buildings (the game won't allow units to be killed). Directions on how to do this are listed below.

- A player playing as the 8th Faction cannot conquer other player's cities, and once a unit from the 8th Faction enters another player's city all adjacent 8th Faction units disappear. Workaround directions on how to a) kill other players cities, and b) how to replace your vanished units are listed below.

- Sealurks and Isles of the Deep are equipped with the Marine Detachment, meaning they can commandeer units from other Factions.

- Wraith units are amphibious, meaning they can attack from the sea.

- You can negotiate peace with the other players, for what its worth.

- Do not select the F1 - FX buttons, as this will crash the game.

Directions on how to "conquer" a city and replace units which disappeared

1. After destroying the last defender in a city take inventory of the units you have around the city, including morale level of each unit. Then invade the city with one of your units. Immediately all of your adjacent within two tiles will disappear from the map.

2. Right-click on the map and place the cursor next to the city.

3. Press Shift-F1, select "Player", then "Aliens", and choose "OK".

4. Locate the Wraith in the menu and click on that entry: a Wraith unit will appear in the cursor-marked square.

5. Invade the city with it, knocking the population down by one.

6. Repeat steps 3-5 until the city disappears.

7. Using the inventory you did in step 1, right-click on the map to place the cursor where needed to replace the first disappeared units.

8. Press Shift-F1 and place the desired unit onto the selected tile.

9. Referring to the morale of the unit as noted in step 1, right-click on the unit and select "Morale": choose the corresponding morale level from the value noted in step 1.

10. Repeat steps 7-9 for all additional units which had disappeared.

Directions on how to disable the Headquarters building

1. Open a folder window, and go to the Firaxis Games/ Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri subdirectory.

2. Open the alphax.txt file using Notepad.

3. Locate the Headquarters entry, and update as follows:

Headquarters, 5, 0, Disable, Disable, Efficiency

4. Save the update.

5. Once done playing this game, to re-enable the Headquarters building make the following change:

Headquarters, 5, 0, None, Disable, Efficiency

Directions on playing the game
1. Download the attached file, unzip, and place into your .../Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/ saves subdirectory.
2. Start Alien Crossfire, select "Load", and load HYKGOMP.SAV.
3. Game will automatically start up with the 8th Faction, and in Scenario Editor mode.

However, you should reduce civilian losses as much as possible.
Each population unit in an original Believer base (whether you captured it or not) counts towards the score of this Game of the Month.

DIRECTIONS
1) Download the zip file (at the bottom of this post) and place it into your main game directory. usually this is: C:/Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/
2) Unzip it there. Confirm overwrite if asked (ONLY FOR WINDOWS USERS)!
3) Start up SMAC, then select "Scenario", "Play Scenario", and then go to the subdirectory "LEGotM" and choose the scenario.

GOOD LUCK!

*Note:
this scenario is made for Librarian difficulty level. Separate Transcend version also linked and attached below.

*Kind of important: please use the [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] tags if you want to talk about strategies. some players want to give it a try before reading the others' experiences.

*For the full Lost Eden mod, and discussion of same, see this thread.

*The most important: if seeing an anatomically correct Poke'mon with no britches on will ruin your day, best not to download this - if your curiosity gets the better of you, you were warned.

OBJECTIVES
For GotM 1202, any base on the map counts as an objective.
As Governor of the Eastern region of Gaian Territory, you will have to conquer all Spartan bases
at the East of the Freshwater Sea.
You will be eligible for the GotM even if you don't achieve all your objectives. The minimum requirement is 1 (one) conquered/subverted base.

This is a SMAC scenario, you don't need the expansion - Alien Crossfire - to play it.

Estimated time of play: 2-3 hours, but you can double that if you're a fan of micromanagement.

DIRECTIONS
1) Download the zip file (see link on top) and place it into your main game directory. usually this is: C:/Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/
2) Unzip it there. Confirm overwrite if asked (ONLY FOR WINDOWS USERS)!
3) Start up SMAC, then select "Scenario", "Play Scenario", and then go to the subdirectory "1202 Warcrimes Reverse" and choose the scenario.
4) Enjoy!

WARNING!
You cannot build additional bases in this scenario. The Gaian people are afraid to relocate closer to the Spartan border because of the recent warcrimes. You will have to 'clean' the shores of the Freshwater Sea before the colonists will arrive.
You won't be able to direct the research capabilities of the Gaian Territory or trade techs with the other factions. Remember you are 'only' a Governor! (Of course, you can always steal the precious techs available to the Spartan forces).
There's no Planetary Council in this scenario. This stuff is only available for the 'guys in the big league' (faction leaders). However you will be able to contact the Spartans using the commlink.

CHANGELOG
Habitat Complex available from the begining of the scenario.

GOOD LUCK!
Note: There's a pretty good story with this one; dunno why it's not at least excerpted and linked here. Maybe included with the download?

Jack Hannah III, as Head of Security, you will have to restore order to the zoo. This means taking control of the exhibit places scattered over the map. There are, of course, disgruntled animals all over the place, ready to transform your mission in a living hell.

Directions:
1) Download the zip file and place it into your main game directory. Usually this is: C: Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
2) Unzip it there.
3) Start up SMAX, then select "Scenario", "Play Scenario", and then go to the subdirectory "1203ZookeeperGotM" and choose the scenario.
4) The game will automatically load with the Zookeepers faction.

Changelog:
Lots of things have been moded including factions, units, tech tree, native life and fungus appearance. You can discover everything using the in-game datalinks.

Important note: The ability named : ) [like the smilie] acts as the artillery ability for units that have non psi weapons and armor. This ability is also used to design units that have both psi armor and psi weapons. It will not function as artillery on psi units, but using psi units is very inexpensive in this scenario and also highly recommended for survival.

Restrictions:
- no additional "bases" can be built (you're starting with 3 such "bases": The Zoo Security HQ, The Tour Boat Start Point and The Outpost);
- no raising/lowering terrain is allowed;
- no tech trading;

*Notes:
You can check at any time the number of objectives reached using the '=' key.
The scenario ends when you get the 'Mission completed' popup.

---

Note: this one did very poorly for getting tried, presumably because of the silly-looking Futurama title art. Well, it's Hell Difficulty, an old hand said the thing gave him nightmares, and it had Angry Birds just before they were briefly cool/popular, and they were a big part of the nightmare..
Note2: There's a pretty good story with this one; dunno why it's not at least excerpted as intro and linked here. Maybe included with the download?

Nomads3GotM.jpg

The November 2012 Game of the Month - Nomads - was built around a custom faction made by Torvald Normann (Cytroll) with art by Robin Pirez and BUncle, who added his personal touch for the new leader portrait. Your mission, as the leader of this faction, is to fight your way to a Conquest Victory. Estimated time of play: +/- 4 hours, depending on your skill level.

Background
After the tragic death of Ahto Ilmar, ex-Colonial Marines Officer of Unity and leader of the Nomad faction since Planetfall, you, Steinar Vog, as his second-in-command and newly-appointed Companion, finally have the means to achieve your goals.
The scenario starts in MY.2181 and your faction is a well-established one. The Nomads have built the Virtual World and explored part of the world map while building some infrastructure. Contact was made with the Morganites and the Nomads have started conducting business together with them. Everything was in place for a long prosperous peace period, but this is set to change shortly.

Your mission:
All you will have to do is let yourself be driven by your nomadic inner nature. Steinar, invading the lands of the other six factions is what you were secretly aiming to do for so long. This is your moment! The time has arrived!
Reaching a Conquest Victory is the only way to finish this scenario. Still, this must be done in a pure nomad way: you are not allowed to build additional colony pods. If you need more bases, you will have to conquer them...

Directions:
1) Download the zip file and place it into your main game directory. Usually this is: C:/Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
2) Unzip it there.
3) Start up SMAC (not SMAX), then select "Scenario", "Play Scenario", and then go to the subdirectory "1211NomadsGotM" and choose the scenario.
4) The game will automatically load with the Nomads faction.

Restrictions:
No additional bases can be built (you're starting with 5 bases). Even though you have the possibility to build colony pods, doing so will invalidate your submission.

*Notes:

Market forces cover.jpg

***

The restaurant was expensive, possibly the most expensive on Planet, but in an extravagant, rather than exclusive, way. The cutlery was heavy with precious metals; the meals were large, even ones made up of genuine, non-vat grown, meat and rare spices. The room was bright with harnessed solar energy, leaving the dark Chiron night to those of lesser means.

In Jeneba's mind, though, the primary source of light seemed to be the smile of the man sitting opposite her, lighting a fine cigar.

"This, in fact", CEO Nwabudike Morgan said, indicating the cigar, "is a good example of what I was talking about. If some other faction leader, Lal for example, was to smoke one of these in public, there would be talk of the leader setting a bad example by smoking unhealthy cigars before the eyes of those poor helpless drones who can't think for themselves. We, however, would think of it as inspirational. 'Look, he is rich enough to smoke expensive cigars'! Then we leave it to the individual drone to pursue his or her happiness in order to be able to smoke one of these one day.

“Or, for that matter, buy a restaurant and turn it into a non-smoking area.

“The point is that we don't demand a certain behavior - all we demand is that you work hard, by hand or by brain, whatever your assets are, to be able to afford the behavior of your choice! And we don't need an army of bureaucrats to make sure you don't put in more than you take out - because you can't! That's the power of the Market!"

Morgan leaned back, obviously pleased with his speech, cheerfully slapping the bottom of the waitress who had just brought him a glass of brandy and laughing loudly at her wide-eyed surprise. He leaned forward and winked at Jeneba.

"That would have been called 'sexual harassment', or perhaps 'adultery', in several other factions; indeed it would have in much of our own. However, in this restaurant, 'brief body contact with serving personnel' is part of the deal we made when having this table reserved for us. We paid good money for it and so it's ours!"

"And does the girl get extra money for providing this - service? ," Jeneba asked. Morgan raised his eyebrows.

"Why, if she was smart enough to negotiate for it! Her body is, of course, protected as her private property under our property laws - the only kind of laws you need - and may be sold or leased as she likes. It's all a matter of supply and demand! It's all in her contract; signed by her out of her own free will!"

"You see", Morgan continued, "the Market is good not only for organizing the distribution of energy, minerals and other limited resources, but also for organizing most human relationships. 'Human behavior is economic behavior', to quote my own greatest role model. And it's not just crude egotism, either. By striving to accomplish wealth for yourself, you inevitably create a better life for everyone around you, from the scientist getting rich from patenting a medical drug which helps ill people all over Planet, to the actor earning sweet credits pursuing his dream while at the same time entertaining his audience."

Jeneba considered her next move. Her boss had asked her to question The Morganite lifestyle, so that he could defend it as a sort of intellectual pastime.

"Well, but what about inherited wealth? Might that not be construed as unjust? Didn't you - "

"Yes, there's a point right there", Morgan interrupted. "We all know that some - not all - who inherit wealth become lazy and passive. However, the urge to provide for your offspring is such a strong driving force that the benefits are greater than the costs. Market forces gain their strength because they are tied to the deepest evolutionary drives imprinted in our very genes. When you mess with the Market, you're messing with a force of nature, which is why the non-market economies are like people thinking they've grown wings when they're really plain-old people in a plane that's about to run out of fuel."

Jeneba spread her hands, "Well, that's plain to see. But the elites of the other factions have invested huge resources and much prestige in their systems. They are not likely to listen to reason and some of them are heavily armed, you know..."

Morgan leaned forward, lowered his voice and put on the let's-get-down-to-business face that Jeneba had come to admire and fear through the years of working for Morgan.

"Ah, this brings us to the reason we're here tonight. You see, I have a plan..."

Quote
And when at last it is time for the transition from megacorporation to planetary government, from entrepreneur to emperor, it is then that the true genius of our strategy shall become apparent, for energy is the lifeblood of this society and when the chips are down he who controls the energy supply controls Planet. In former times the energy monopoly was called "The Power Company"; we intend to give this name an entirely new meaning.

CEO Nwabudike Morgan
"The Centauri Monopoly"

Quote
Wars, diplomacy and technology are all vehicles driven by the fuel of money. Economic forces have been hard to control or predict, with many notable failures in human history. In the years to come, we shall harness discoveries in areas such as sociology, psychology and artificial intelligence to finally tame the systems. In the end, it will become possible to gain a monopoly on energy currency, and gain permanent, unassailable control over the world. Not one transaction shall pass between any two people without our approval.

Wanting to play this scenario was the final incentive for me to order the expansion pack.

Quote from: Imagine A Cool Name
I dislike Morgan and this scenario doesn't fit the way I like playing at all, but I am ready to give it a try. I do not think I have ever even tried to win a game by Cornering the energy market before, so this should be interesting.

Good luck!

War Crimes (by Buster's Uncle - pt.1)

The rover patrol along the disputed border with the Gaians had been routine. Ravi was relating one of his stories about yet another improbable romantic adventure from the driver’s seat, while Lev scanned the landscape from shotgun and pretended to listen. They’d pulled duty together lots of times over the years; Ravi wasn’t a bad guy, if you could stand the bragging. He was a good Spartan.

“So when I put my pants on the next morning, I realized I had 10 more EC in my pockets than I’d left barracks with,” Ravi said, “I don’t remember everything, but she must have paid-”

“BOIL!” Lev shouted, pointing towards a fungus-covered rise.

Ravi instantly slammed the wheel left towards the threat; it was doctrine to attack mindworms on sight, before they attacked you. Lev brought the turret gun to bear and opened fire.

Lev saw the world swirl before his eyes; contracting, expanding, contracting, expanding – whirling - impossible pressure building. He remembered every time he’d been cut in his entire life at once. Ravi’s screams beside him were the hunting cries of great cats. Fangs ripping at his flesh, eating him!

WORMS BURROWING IN THROUGH HIS EYES!

Ravi slowly realized he wasn’t dead. He hurt too much to be dead. He blearily realized he was folded over the wheel of the recon rover. Ugh. The worm had counterattacked while they were still in motion and they’d crashed into something. He looked over at Lev.

His mind blanked out again.

Ravi didn’t remember sealing his airmask, grabbing the flamethrower and exiting the cabin, but his training had held strong. Making sure of every last bit of the boil was S.O.P. His throat was too raw to scream his rage at the burning remains; there was nothing but pain.

He was looking around to be sure he was done when he spotted the barely-stirring woman lying prone nearby, her hands clutched to her head. Gaian insignia.

It was true then; the Gaians were controlling mindworms for weapons. Unleashing those horrors on people. Killed Lev.

He couldn't even scream as he aimed the flamethrower.

Editorial (by DrazharLn - pt.2)

The Interview (pt.3)

“Commander Santos? I’m Dean Gómez, with Instant Briefing.” Gómez’ eyes slowly adjusted to the dim hospital room as Santos turned from the window he’d been standing at. “I’m here for the interview. How are you today?”

“Gómez… What rank?” Ravi said.

“Lieutenant,” Dean said, “Reserves, of course, but that won’t last with war on the way.”

“Well sit,” Santos said, himself settling on the edge of the bed, tiredly.

“How are you holding up, Commander?” Gómez said.

“I’ve been better and been worse,” Santos said, “The nightmares are pretty bad, still, but I’m okay when I’m awake,” he grinned wryly. “Now, there was this time that I was seeing this woman that- “ He broke off at a sudden loud commotion of voices in the hall.

Gómez’ datapad beeped loudly at the same time. Glancing at the screen for a second, he exclaimed, “The Gaians have declared vendetta!”

The two men looked at each other, surprized. Everyone knew war was coming after the border incident, but no one had expected the Gaians to start it.

“I’m doing fine, Lieutenant Gómez,” Ravi said slowly, “The nightmares have gone away. Tell them I’m ready for active duty; I’m going to kill the Gaians.”

DIRECTIONS

2) Unzip it there.
3) Start up SMAC (not the expansion), then select "Scenario", "Play Scenario", and then go to the subdirectory "1005 WarcrimesOS" and choose the scenario.
4) Choose the difficulty level and the game will automatically load with the Spartans.

OBJECTIVES
For GotM 1005, any base on the map counts as an objective.
As Governor of the Southwestern region of the Spartan Empire, you will have to conquer all Gaian bases at the west of the Freshwater Sea.
You will be eligible for the GotM even if you don't achieve all your objectives. The minimum requirement is 1 (one) conquered/subverted base.

WARNING!
  • You cannot build additional bases in this scenario. The Spartan people are afraid to relocate closer to the Gaian border because of the recent war crimes. You will have to 'clean' the shores of the Freshwater Sea before the colonists will arrive.
  • You won't be able to direct the research capabilities of the Spartan Empire or trade techs with the other factions. Remember you are 'only' a Governor! (Of course, you can always steal the precious techs available to the Gaian forces).
  • There's no Planetary Council in this scenario. This stuff is only available for the 'guys in the big league' (faction leaders). However you will be able to contact the Gaians using the commlink.

CHANGELOG

The psalmist writes in Psalm 24, “The Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it;” We are all part of God’s creation and the Good News is that God is actively working to redeem and reconcile all of creation. As a follower of God, I must take an active role in my stewardship of God’s creation and in advocating for the redemption and protection of this new Earth that God has blessed us to be a part of.

Planet has spoken to me. In this Promised Land God has given us, there is a special thing; the Planetmind is touched of His essence – a Holy thing, worthy of our reverence.

In First Peter 4:10 We are told: “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” We have done as our Lord has commanded, and He has smiled upon us, gifting our efforts at good stewardship with prosperity. But with this prosperity comes a further duty.

I have studied and prayed upon this since we came together as the Believers of Planet. Our creed is a simple one; we must care for Planet, Mankind’s new home that God has given us a birthright. To do any less, as Man did to Earth, defies God’s Holy Grace and would be punished, as God did Man on Earth – with death. But to be good stewards without faith denies God just as surely!

We are surrounded by the faithless, the blasphemous and the poor stewards. This is an AFFRONT to our Heavenly Father! We, God’s chosen, have a duty to set things right in this Promised Land – God’s new incarnate being; we alone have the true faith and the backing of God. He has anointed us – God has made the humble strong!

Were Deuteronomy 7:1-2 written today, it might read: “When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the world whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many factions before thee, the Gaians, and the Hive, and the Spartans, and the Peacekeepers, and the Consciousness, and the Drones, and the Data Angels, and the Pirates, eight nations greater and mightier than thou; And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them”.

Our crusade against the unrighteous shall not falter; for our faith will sustain us. God commands us that we issue forth and cut off the generations of the wicked. NOW is the time! NOW shall we don the Armor of Righteousness and blot that which is evil in his sight from this Holy world!

Amen.

[2132: Peace Conference]

The xenchibi blooms were beautiful.

His staff had done an excellent job, Cha thought. When they’d urged him to have a private dinner with Sister Miriam, he’d insisted on a relaxed setting; he rarely had to deal with people on a one-on-one basis, and he wanted to be as comfortable as possible. The burgundy colors of the wall hangings were muted against the background of old wood. The lighting was low. Mellow music was playing quietly in the background.

The master touch was the extraordinarily robust xenchibi centerpiece crowning the feast laid out on the table. Xenchibi blooms were in common enough use as a decoration among the People of Planet for intimate, social settings – not least for the tranquil, sense-of-closeness effects their spores fostered. Cha had noticed the soothing scent of the impressive bouquet as he entered the room and immediately felt more ready to face the woman already seated at the table... (read more)

..This [scenario] has been the most fun for me to play so far. The older ones did offer up more of a challenge as far as winning is concerned, but this one had a good combination of being unique while still offering up a challenge, and you guys did a great job of creating a story. I still have the urge now and then to replay this one.

Good luck!:)

Note: MOST of the GotM team's work has a pretty good story attached, to be found bundled w/ the scenario file, I think - we didn't do a great job of always linking them in the posts, but most can also be tracked down in AC2's writing forum, Planet Tales, and many are extremely good. Others are just good intros, reproduced in full in the post - regret that we didn't make clearer links to full stories more. This one, I had no confidence as I wrote, but I just reread, and am sinfully proud.

To: Commander Kirkway
From: Commissioner Pravin Lal
U.N. Headquarters, MY 2150, January 29

Commander, I am greatly concerned that recent conflicts on Chiron threaten
our ambition of returning into space. Therefore, I have created United Nations
Space Agency (UNSA). I apoint you to the position of Agency Director.

I prepared adequate means to build UNSA facilities on one of the islands of
Santa Ana Archipelago, south of Monsoon Jungle and east of Sea of Unity,
which was scouted 10 years ago by Believers. Spartans have already established
a base near Geothermal Shallows. So far, we have good relations with Colonel
Santiago. You can also ask assistance of Lady Deirdre Sky, our long time
pact-mate. Her bases are on Monsoon Jungle coast to the north. Our intelligence
is sketchy, but there is possible Hive activity in the west. I know Yang
can threaten your bases, but still the archipelago is the safest location
for UNSA. There is intellegance of a possible recent drone rebellion in the Hive.
Watch for Hive rebels in the region. Send a patrol to South 2 Airbase Complex,
I will send supplies to that location for you.

Your objective, Commander Kirkway, is to successfully launch our first
satellite into Chiron's orbit as soon as you can.

Good Luck!
Pravin Lal

Peace In Our Time - U.N. Succession

Datalinks: Aphelion Meet (redirected from 10-10-10 attacks)

1. Diplomatic context: Initial projections assumed a period of four to five decades before a full Council could meet. These projections came from calculations based on limited faction motility, helial radiation disturbances, and the slow adoption of ionosphere broadcasting tech. However, the projections failed to account for the presence of Unity resupply pods littering Chiron's surface, many containing data key to sending/receiving commlinks. After establishing face-to-face contact with Believer and Spartan factions, the U.N. communications directorate pieced together enough data from recovered data files in Unity pods and inter-faction transmissions to reestablish ties with all existent factions. The final official "first contact" brought the Hive into U.N. communications in MY 2108.

The quick pace of interfactional contact allowed for global scrutiny over any border disputes, forestalling the worst-case scenario of internecine conflict. An uneasy truce governed the standard year between full contact and first summit. In MY2110, delegates of all council member factions met under U.N. auspices at the Neutral Zone to address the Commissioner's proposed New Charter. The summit drew its name from the Aphelion of Chiron from Hercules B, considered an auspicious timeframe due to reduced native life activity.

2. Aims of the Aphelion Meet: The U.N. agenda planned for the meeting included the following unresolved binding goals: establishment of multiilateral military communications; clear demarcation of border and territorial claims; an up-down vote on adoption of the Unity Charter. The agenda included the following unresolved aspirational goals: opening round of talks to set a cross-border trade regimen; initial outlines of a human rights code; discussions on a universal energy standard; and humanitarian technology-sharing for research vital to Chironside survival.

Gaian agenda: The only other faction to submit a full agenda was the Gaian leader Deirdre Skye, whose agenda mirrored U.N. interests in key concerns, but introduced several measures of binding multilateral limitations to avert the heavy man-made environmental concerns of Earthside industrial development through history. Skye also emerged as a strong supporter of native biomorph research, nominally outlawed under the U.N.'s interim preservation doctrines.

3. Diplomatic results: The meeting successfully achieved several key goals: establishing a common commlink protocol; affirming the Charter's central tenets while leaving key provisions open for revocation at a later date; and the re-establishment of Earthside "energy credit" currencies for uniform economic liquidity.

Surviving records show that the meeting was due to begin a second schedule of talks addressing military cooperation and resolving territorial disputes. The Meet participants were unable to reach consensus before the 10-10-10 Attacks, which claimed the lives of all faction leaders and Meet staff.

4. Terrorist attack: The 10-10-10 Attacks comprised a series of coordinated attacks on the Neutral Zone complexes. Together, they eliminated all seven faction members and resulted in the death by exposure of more than five hundred identified victims. Piecemeal records suggest that the initial attack occurred inside the Meet Hall, with an intentional fire or chemical alarm. This caused automated and manned systems to seal, and to activate oxygenation. Chemical tests from the site show traces of isotopes, likely pumped into the air supply from points inside the security perimeter. The initial contamination gave a lethal dosage of radiation to more than half the Meet staff. Adding to the confusion, many of those lethally affected from outset were key personnel, and thus received a disproportionate amount of first aid and support systems when no remedial effects were possible.

By 2110-10-11, a small remnant of staff were suited against the atmosphere, attempting to overcome the failsafes and possibly dealing with armed aggression. In the evening of the second day, vehicle fire directed by people or persons unknown destroyed the central hall and dormitories. The last eyewitness account recovered comes from U.N. Security Detail Pvt. Nova Sudiwikarmi, who recorded that men in his squad had attempted to exit the compound and come under fire from vehicles commanded by unconfirmed, and seemingly contradictory, factions. Sudiwikarmi surmised that the confusion after the terrorist attack caused many legitimate security personnel to use force in self-defense, at which point distinguishing terrorist from soldier became impossible. Sudiwikarmi's last transmission in the evening of 2110-10-11 describes an attempt to regroup and take control of one of the few mining rovers present as perimeter defense. Sudiwikarmi's body was recovered along with several civilians approximately 13 km from the Meet: each had signs of death by nitrogen asphyxiation save one, U.N. Minister of Education Simi Rosan, who died of a firearm injury and blood loss.

5. Aftermath and global condemnation: U.N. patrols were the first to arrive onsite, owing to border proximity, but were slow to respond to other factions' demands for information. By 2110-10-13, Acting Secretary Sarita assumed ministerial powers in accordance with U.N. succession directives. Sarita released full decedent lists to all factions, but held details of the attack confidential. She also initiated a full-scale review of security measures and numerous depositions to determine terrorist complicity within the U.N. These measures, though justified under the Police Powers act, brought U.N. internal functions to a standstill, further delaying the release of key facts to other faction representatives.

Factual findings of the U.N. investigation were made public 2110-10-15, along with a call for unity in condemnation of the perpetrators of the attack and in resolution to bring them to justice. Sarita relinquished her position after the Electorate ratified Prashanti Lal, sister to predecessor Pravin Lal, as Interim Commissioner. Her first act was the repeal of the Police Powers and the normalization of citizens' personal freedoms. Less than two days later, the interim Spartan military command officially revoked the state of truce between their faction and the U.N., and advised that U.N. personnel encountered on Spartan claims would be subject to imprisonment without trial. One week later, forces under Believer command attacked and overran a U.N. border depot, seizing sensor technology and materiel. Local reports indicated that the depot now broadcast the religious agenda of Reverend Manuel Godwinson. Despite these hostilities, Interim Commissioner Prashanti Lal on 2110-10-33 formally declared her intention to preserve civilian freedoms, even as she passed the bill mobilizing unprecedented forces to defend U.N. borders.

The Gaians under Ailean Skye communicated a statement of mutual bereavement and regret on 2110-10-18, indicating a continuation of formal truce status. No official contacts have been reported from the University, Hive, or Morganites. The state of relations with these factions, and their leadership successions - if any - remain undefined.

* ~ * ~ *

"Sister Lal?" Sarita's soft words brought Prashanti back from her thoughts. "Secretary-General, the meeting is in 20 minutes."

Prashanti turned from the sunset out the window. "Thank you, Sarita. Show them in when it’s time."

It felt strange occupying Pravin's office, being addressed as Secretary-General in his place. Prashanti was no stranger to command; since Planetfall, as Pravin's sister and most trusted lieutenant, she'd issued orders in his name, been his closest counselor.

But with him gone...

Tears began to well again, red in the sunset. The week since the explosion at the face-to-face Planetary Council meeting had been a hectic one. The simultaneous loss of leaders had thrown Chiron into chaos. "Oh Pravi," she thought, desolately.

The task of guiding humanity towards reunification had seemed endless even with Pravin’s resolute hand at the helm, and now... Prashanti wiped tears and opened the dossier on the other new faction leaders.

The faces were all new. Many were taken from furtive angles, or strange lighting, as if the photos were illicit artifacts. Far too little was known for sure - this dark cabinet of humanity's new leaders. Lord Ailean Skye was believed more detached than his late wife; the philosopher of the Gaians. Here was the new University Provost, Iskra Vadima, whose name turned up no results at all in the academic publication archives. Smiling out from the page, the broad face of CEO Chinwemma Morgan seemed oddly out of place, given the solemnity of her rise to power. The Spartan leader, Colonel Sosimo Fernan, seemed oddly friendly for a military man, beaming out from the distance like a jolly uncle, in stark contrast to Manuel Godwinson, whose fiery oratory was already the stuff of legend. And finally, rounding out the seven, the enigmatic mouthpiece of the Hive: Speaker Liren Yang, whose clockwork-regular broadcasts assured the Hive workers - and indeed any other humans inclined to believe her - of the certainty that everything was proceeding to her plan.

Already, these faces were making their presence known in the U.N. corridors of power. Within days, the Spartans and Believers had begun pushing their troops towards Peacekeeper territory, in clear violation of the border agreements. Days when Peacekeepers watched their new leader and wondered if she really had what it took to lead.

Prashanti smiled to herself, despite it all. Turns out, she did. In a democratic civilian government with strong institutions, all you needed to lead in times of war was a damn good general. And Daoud al-Bahraini had been just the damn good general she'd needed. They'd mobilized in mere hours and held the line until the crisis passed.

And people on the holopodes were cheering in the streets, clasping each other and shouting with joy. And chanting. Prashanti brought her hand to her eyes again, but for tears of humbled happiness, not bereavement. They'd been chanting her name.

She smiled and dried her eyes properly. This was no time to be getting soft-headed with pride, or a time to be weeping with despair. Her people were still in peril; they needed her to be strong, sure, and above all, wise.

And as she had promised at the ceremony, she would lead them out of the darkness.

"What," she wondered as always, "would Pravin do?"

4) choose the difficulty level and the game will automatically load with the Peacekeepers.
4) if you liked the introductory story, please enjoy the other files in the .zip- they tell the story of how each of the other factions handled the transition. Feedback would be appreciated. They might help suggest creative directions for your AARs, too.

Changelog:

Carrier Deck special ability moved to Doctrine:Air Power.

FACTIONS

This scenario (and the associated stories) was built around the Alternate Gender Leader Project custom factions- which have all been specially modified to fit a realistic sudden power-vacuum situation, not the simple “same persons with their genders switched” that they began as.

#Objectives:

The PKs must conquer six objective bases in order to capture and interrogate the respective governors.
The six cities are:
- Great Conclave
- Judgement Seat
- Penal Colony
- Spartan Citadel
- Manufacturing Warrens
- Sparta Command
There's no need to achieve a standard victory condition in order to be eligible for the GotM Competition.
The scenario can be played at any difficulty level and even though it doesn't have a time limit, you should be able to finish it in less than 100 turns.

Have fun reading and playing!

AIi, famous among SMACers as the author of Joe, called this set of stories the best thing she ever participated in writing. [shrugs] I'd lost way too many people in the 10 years previous. I think the seven stories are also bundled w/ the scenario file in some format. The very last story in the set ought to break your heart if you have one...

Sinder Roze awoke to the beeping on her nightstand. Sitting up in bed, saw it was 5:36a.m.

Putting the headset on, she slapped the earpiece to activate. "This better be good."

"Pwned, Datajack." Katt's voice began, "You wanted to know immediately - Tinker Junction reports the radiometric telltales. The Gaians have initiated the Ascent To Transcendence."

God; this, finally. "Where?"

"Seems to triangulate on Gaia's Landing, Datajack. Recon tried a few system probes already, but they'd sewed up the interlocks and the firewalls look tight. They were ready for us."

Roze pushed up her visor to rub her eyes, thinking. "Have they tried the reactor control systems? That's going to suck a lot of juice, to power the link with Planet, or at least at the last stage they --- crap; I can't think straight yet."

"No vulnerabilities found yet. -It's my regular duty shift tonight if you need to get back to sleep, ma'am, and our people are on the job probing. Watching won't help. I'll ping you again if anything happens."

Roze considered, still groggy, "Yeah." She'd only been offline two hours, and tomorrow would need her sharp, organizing the countermeasures and making arrangements with any allies she could get. "Look in Contingencies folder of Protocols and open the Louis Armstrong file and review, okay? Password forthelulz.

"But first, Katt, screen Free Drone Central now, make sure Domai knows - and that I'll definitely be talking to him tomorrow. Logout." Roze put the headset down and flopped back onto the bed.

'The Group Mind,' she thought, looking up at nothing. 'All my life has been a war for freedom against groupthink and the human mob, dancing and scatting against something so vast and slow and oh, how it hates the independent mind, punishes style, and now that stupid, stupid Deirdre thinks she can suck us all into an alien plant making a Group Mind. Over my dead body, she will.'

Mobs were vicious and stupid, to even call it mob psychology gave it too much credit for any thinking going on. The human herding instinct had been the bane of Roze's existence, social cues a self-contained girl hadn't caught, making it feel like everywhere she ever went there'd been a meeting held that she hadn't been invited to. Social rules and holoshows and fashions and turns of phrase and customs that didn't make sense and no one ever explained.

She'd never been interested in any of that; she had her machines and her jazzy, elegant code. But an outsider noticed things insiders didn't - how on every systems analyst gig, every organization was full of people dressing alike, talking alike, telling her the same jokes, thinking alike, if you call that thought; how quickly and completely an outsider could become a pariah after a single quarrel with an incompetent IT worker or sysop.

Mindless mobs and humans herding, everywhere. No original thought, no diversity in groupthink; no rhythm nor style, no jazz to it, just an empty white-noise hum. Group minds, bad enough how people graze together in a herd by instinct, not-thinking together in lockstep. Bad enough the natural way people always form group minds.

And the Gaians thought it was a good idea to drive the human race extinct making the biggest group mind of all. A single life. One mind; one thought, a dull carrier hum the soundtrack of Hell Forever trapped in the alien Group Mind.

'No, just NO,' she closed her sleepy eyes to get some rest, 'Never. Domai will accompany my trumpet playing, and Deirdre, have I ever got some free blowing that will blow your group mind...'

SMAC game. Remember, this is SMAC game!

Southern Chiron hemisphere, Somewhere..., Mission Year 2190

Mission Year 2190, Day 1.

Miriam Godwinson took a deep breath. Since the landing yesterday, she got some 3 hours sleep. She was needed to make crucial decisions and did not want to leave them for her lieutenants. The air in the cabin of an escape pod was stale, but at least, one could breathe without a mask.

The pod landed on a wide beach deep in unexplored territory in the southern hemisphere. They only knew about this terrain what was visible to the line of horizon. The landing itself must have been overseen by God, since all pods, that managed to start from the last Believer's base, successfully flew over the ocean and barely on fuel fumes "drifted" over water to the first land they could find. Yes, it was a day yesterday...

* * *

Mission Year 2190, Day 0.

A plasma sentinel soldier rushed in to their local base command center in The Glory of God, the last base, that was still not conquered by Hiverian and University forces.
"We need to go now, Sister! NOW!" He was clearly desperate to convince them to leave the building immediately. Miriam looked towards Lt. Camia.
"All documents destroyed" Camia replied turning away from the shredder machine.
Miriam pointed to the main command computer.
"Soldier, destroy this."
"Yes, Sister, right away" he took a gun rifle from his shoulder.
"With explosive rounds" Miriam said.
The soldier shoot two longer rounds across the device. They could hear loud clanking sounds and sand-like sounds of electronics being torn to pieces.

They run out of the building. The smoke from flames of burning base facilities to the west was filling large part of the air. Somewhere to the south there was a large storage area warehouse, where they prepared some of the escape pods exactly for this occasion. It was the closest.
Miriam running turned on her inter-com.
"Miriam here. Commander Cassian, are you there?"
"This is Cassian. Where are you now?"
"We left command center... We are running south."
"You have the warehouse pods the closest to you, as we planned. There are three. I put more fuel in the largest one, Sister. Take the largest."

A minute later they reached storage field entrance. There it was, the largest pod.

Far in the distance to the east, she could see two Hiverian rovers rolling over a hill, behind base outskirts. Camia and the soldier were running towards the largest pod.
"No" Miriam shouted "take this one." She pointed towards the smaller pod, but closer to them. They reached it in several seconds and entered the pod. It already had a crew and they helped them to the seats.

Pilot was watching surroundings on a monitor. Camera was showing some shadowy figures running from the northern end of the storage field. They seemed to be hiding when running behind patches of smoke, so they could approached unnoticed, but it was in vain. University Commandos!
"Take them out" Miriam ordered.
"We will manage to start before they reach us, Sister" the pilot answered. "The other pods can deal with them."

A very loud explosion suddenly rocked their pod. A missile salvo from a rover on the hills has hit the largest pod. The pilot pulled the start lever and sudden g-force pushed them into the seats strongly. Yes, it was God's doing. If they got to that largest pod, they all would be dead now.

* * *

Mission Year 2190, Day 1.

Miriam walked towards a pod, where Commander Cassian established their present command center. Twelve pods started from The Glory of God base and twelve landed here on this shore successfully. She took a binocular and scanned horizon. To the west she could see rocky hills and some mountains behind them. To the east there were fungal fields. And to the south there was flat terrain covered with occasional patches of green Chiron grass.

They had no big choice where to establish a new base, but this was not that bad place. She was sure, no Hive or University unit could reach them here for long time. They had time to rebuild.

GAME OF THE MONTH
DECEMBER 2018

Morgan's Merchant League

- - - = = = * * * * * = = = - - -

Morgan Industries, Mission Year 2150

Morgan left the meeting room and took an elevator to his apartment.

This day was particularly difficult. His analysts reported news about University of Planet starting a new Secret Project, so-called The Virtual World. They discussed for long time possible implications of Zakharov completing his new endeavor. And his effort towards The Merchant Exchange was still in danger, he did not know, how much Roze was close to completion of her Merchant Exchange project, which she started already 15 years ago. The Exchange must be in Morgan Industries! He cannot allow the main stock exchange of the Planet to be outside of his faction. And Roze, an escapee from his own corporation, the one in whom he placed so much trust and hopes for the future considering her computer systems skills, was now showing her strength. Sinder Roze won the Planetary Governor elections in 2141. He even helped her, for a good bribe, ofcourse, yet it was completely uncertain, what danger she poses in the future.

However, now it was late evening, and Morgan was very tired. He took a look around his luxurious apartment. Hmm, it could be better. As far as he knew, it was the most luxurious in the whole corporation. And actually, no other faction could afford such luxury. So it was the best apartment on Chiron, but not good enough for Nwabudike Morgan. He had better one on Earth. So here, he has to have a better one than that one on Earth.

He made a drink with Morga-Cola from the finest fruit tincture he traded with Believers. They had it from Unity Supply pods, and naturally, such luxurious Old Earth Merchandise had to find its way to Morgan Industries. He instructed his diplomats to search for such opportunities when dealing with other factions on Chiron. The drink was excellent choice, he felt, he could do something else today. Thinking about merchandise from Earth, there was something more, acquired recently, an old computer game "Patrician III." The economic game, which simulated Hanseatic League during middle ages in Europe. He could play for some time.

After several hours, Luebeck was prospering, it was the best town in the game! He was its Lord Mayor and soon Alderman of the whole Hanseatic League. Small consolation for his lost elections in 2141! Ha ha ha! Morgan laughed. He lost real elections on Alpha Centauri for Planetary Governorship and now he plays an old and outdated graphics, computer game to get even. Pathetic.

And what if he actually won on Chiron such trading merchandise "game"? Yes, that's the idea. He can give it a go for a hundred years. Morgan Industries will be the best faction in Planetary Commerce till 2250. Other aims can wait. He is going to be immortal anyway, so it will be like nothing. Pure joy for an economic tycoon like him.

Tomorrow! He will summon his economic council and seed the idea...

Gaian Luck
by Mart
Shortly after planetfall, you could review reports about surrounding terrain. There is abundant plant life, fertile soil, rivers and sea coast. Not only you grabbed with Deirdre more landing pods from U.N.S. Unity, but also will be able to establish a colony in a very good location.
Other mission officers could not be reached by radio. They have either equipment malfunction or they did not survive this emergency landing. While regretting loss of life, you are not that worried about getting all those wrong ideas for future of this human colony out of your way.
Just last corrections on the tabview and report will be ready for Lady Deirdre Sky. Living these past days in almost constantly moving escape pods has become unbearable to large portion of the crew. Decisions needed to be made.

This is vanila SMAC game. No SMAX expansion!

The Planet Rising

In the year 2101, six factions left the damaged hull of UNS Unity and made Planetfall. Colonel Santiago, Lady Skye, Provost Zakharov, Brother Lal, Chairman Yang, and finally – you, Captain Svensgaard – led their people onto this alien world. The Gaians proved to be the luckiest and landed in a rich jungle, which helped them rapidly expand throughout the main continent. You remained in touch with Santiago, as you two had forged some rapport onboard Unity. However, the fate of the rest is still a mystery. It remains to be seen if they are dead or thrive in some secluded areas.

You found a safe bay at the base of a dormant volcano called the Mount of Planet. After a while, in order to contain the Gaian expansion, you decided to send colonists onto the mainland. After founding the Outpost and New Hope, you managed to establish mining operations on a range of hills, deeper in the continent. Things were going well for a while.

But then, something… happened. Nobody knows for sure what. Some say the Gaians awoke some kind of force among the ancient Ruins. Others, that the will of Planet itself manifested in a physical form. Perhaps the strangest rumors talk about a young boy who got lost in fungus and miraculously developed new powers. But whatever it was, it brought havoc to human settlements. Gaian bases, one by one, succumbed to hordes of mind worms, beyond doubt controlled by some wicked intellect. Gaian citizens were forced into submission, while Lady Skye herself, humiliated, swore obedience to her new master – self-proclaimed Prophet Cha Dawn, leader of the Cult of Planet. Now she is the head of a puppet government, a fraction of her former glory.

Soon, yours and Spartans’ bases were quickly conquered as well. Despite heroic sacrifices of your people, they simply could not stand against ferocious attacks of countless mind worms. As the Spartans faced complete obliteration, you used your transport ship to evacuate some of their colonists to a small island to the North East. Colonel Santiago refused to come onboard the ship, but was grateful enough to sign a pact of cooperation with you.

Shortly, waves of attackers reached the Outpost, your last settlement on the mainland. In order to evacuate the civilians, you have dispatched a transport to the base, loaded with your best soldiers, the Shock Platoon. They reinforced the garrison and saved so many people that you cannot possibly evacuate all of them. You need to choose whom to save…

Your mission is to evacuate, find some territory to settle and rebuild your power, and then to reclaim Chiron for humanity. You’ll be damned if you surrender to some disgusting bugs, even if it means fighting the Planet itself.

------------------------

It is 2106 and you play the Pirates. The main continent is overrun by the mind worms controlled by Cha Dawn. He is very powerful and remains a serious threat even when you leave the mainland, so consider yourself warned.

You start pacted with Santiago, but it is not a permanent pact, unlike the vendetta with Cha Dawn and Deirdre.

Your mission is first to survive, then to conquer Cha Dawn’s HQ. This is the only objective in the scenario.

You start with a battleship, 8-3-6, but you have no technology for the components. Do not play any tricks to pull reverse engineering on it (although I’m not aware of such a thing).

There is no Planetary Council. Nobody has the time for ballots and politics when the entire mission is compromised and the humanity itself is on the verge of extinction.

Raising and lowering terrain is impossible.

Other standard rules apply – no reverse engineering, crawler upgrade, bug abuse, etc.

Other settings:

large map
victory conditions: conquest only
Spoils of War and Do or Die off
Supply pods and random events on
Direct research, normal tech rate.

I provided this scenario in three different versions:

1) Light – for casual game, after evacuation you should get some peace for a while. Cha Dawn has no Projects and only a few IoDs.
2) Normal – quite a difficult version in itself. Cha Dawn has 2 Planet-related Projects and many units to keep you on your toes from the early turns.
3) Hard – look, some people just get off of pain and who are we to judge? Download this version if you’ve been naughty and deserve punishment. Cha Dawn has 5 Planet-related Projects and a horde of units to make your life miserable.

This is my first scenario, so feedback will be appreciated a lot!

Enjoy the game!
