Not sure how moddable this is but I think a series of land tiles that, while connected to other tiles, appear to have the sea between them on the map would improve the map's aesthetic value a lot. Think of a river feature except it looks like a strait.
Kind of a minor issue, but is there any way to model how Phoenix, Arizona is one of the largest cities in the United States? It just occurred to me in my recent US playthrough on the current map that as things stand now, Phoenix, a city of 1,600,000 people in a metropolitan area of 4,000,000, cannot grow beyond size 1 without the cereal corporation.
More people live there than the entirety of my home province of Alberta, which on the current map, can easily sustain two cities of 8 - 14 population, despite the fact it's April and the weather still forecasts snow.
Unfortunately, with how Civ works, I can't really see how this would be solved, but I think it is something worth thinking about, as Phoenix may not be the only example of this, but it is the most egregious example.

I think it can be solved by allowing trade routes to *always*, no matter what civic, bring food, like in Caveman2Cosmos, from which commerce and hammers can follow through worked tiles and specialists. It always struck me as odd how the game only allowed cities to grow by working their BFC.
Also, perhaps the mod could use tile features to simulate weather? Where you'd normally place flood plains, you could have combinations like 'Flood Plains/Weather X' instead and these could be used to add or subtract food from tiles.
