I was meaning in terms of a socialist american dream. I'm well aware that the analogy doesn't apply to anything outside of the dream.
You mean the left-liberal dream of a healthcare and education system that's not the laughing stock of the world?

Pretty much. It turns the forced equality idea from Communism into a safety net that ensures people can get up after they fall and combines it with non-laissez faire Capitalism's idea of upward mobility through a regulated yet largely independent marketplace. I know it's a dramatic oversimplification to call the goal of socialism "equality and prosperity", but so is calling communism "equality", capitalism "prosperity", and fascism "unity".

BTW Leoreth, I didn't learn about socialism in school. They taught us communism, capitalism, laissez faire capitalism, and fascism, but they didn't teach socialism. SAD!

It's the conservative narrative that everything that is the default minimum for human rights and public services in all other developed nations on the planet is socialism because that's what pops up first on autocomplete when an informed person types social democracy.

Although I have to admit that a bunch of milquetoast European parties that have socialism in their name but nowhere in their program aren't helping.

Marx used communism and socialism as synonyms, but nobody ever listens to the poor guy. :(

Wer hat uns verraten? Sozialdemokraten!

Is it bad that socialism has taken on the colloquial meaning of "treating citizens fairly"?

Hard to answer this question without dissecting the phrase treating citizens fairly. I can come at it from one end and reply that unfair treatment is an inherent feature of capitalism so that would make it an entirely accurate statement, on the other hand when Sandersian progressives in the US make this demand they are mostly comparing run of the mill capitalist mixed economies to the dystopian plutocracy in their own country and these countries certainly manage to achieve the bare minimum without any socialism.

On Socialism, Capitalism and equality, the main difference is how you define and perceive 'equality', broadly equality can be very roughly decided into 2 camps, equality of opportunity and equality of outcome, the former believing the fairest way is to level the playing field to give everyone the equal chance to be successful, the latter is better summed up by everyone is inherently equal therefore the outcome must be equal. the former generally being the more 'capitalistic' and the latter 'socialistic'. regardless of opinions over what is fair and equal or capitalist or socialist, America has rather unwaveringly backed equality of opportunity and the 'American dream' almost perfectly personifies it.

*Offer only valid for white male citizens for most of history. Terms and conditions may apply.

Capitalism is fundamentally inherently anti-egalitarian, regardless of outcome or opportunity. Even if we assume an ideal imaginary scenario where everybody starts on a level playing field, within a single generation newly born people will have different opportunities, never mind different outcomes. This gap only widens over time as more and more wealth is concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people. Capitalism is a cancerous growth that must be completely eradicated if our species is to survive and prosper. It cannot be controlled, it cannot be tamed, it can only be fought. Capitalism is the root from which all totalitarianisms grow.

There is no equality of opportunity in capitalism and there never has been. The whole idea of capitalism is founded on the accumulation of wealth and privilege to perpetuate advantages in opportunity across generations.

1SDAN started it!

Also I'm right. Totalitarianism is a product of capitalist modernity. It did not exist before the 20th century.

But back to OT posting in this thread

Have you considered having two types of ocean terrain?

Tropical Ocean vs Temperate Ocean

They could have differing health and food yields, and maybe different graphics too. (Like maybe make tropical ocean have a greenish tint, and keep the current color for temperate ocean)

Actually such a statement is the exact opposite of the "equality of opportunity" propaganda free market politics likes to dress itself up in, but at least it is honest in its moral emptiness.

It's also always said by people who have consistently shown themselves to be incapable of accomplishing anything, of course they are averse to merit.

If we go back to specific features of parts of the map, is it possible to make units specific to a region? An example would be the Swiss pikemen, buildable in cities around switzerland as a mercenary. Things like pirate ships in the caribbean and Berber horsemen in north africa.

Vanilla RFC had mercenaries. Not sure if it was region-specific like SoI and RFCE though. Leoreth removed it (in v1.14, I think).

I don't want to add a special mercenary window again, but I like the idea of units that can be built in cities normally but are unlocked by being in a specific region.
