Am I the only weirdo Civ gamer?

Gandhi fumes, "Why isn't Atomic Bomb on my production list?!?!"

I Lol'd at this comment. As for the poster, I totally have to try that... Instead of world police I've been taking the position of World Bully trying to conquer the world. Though I've set everything to complete randomization, no map mod. ): I should download some of those and play another one out. Thanks for the awesome idea.

How were you able to make sure you start in Australia and how did you turn off nukes?

Once you download the 'yet not another earth mod' and the city state ai true starting location addon he has, a XML file in the addon folder lists the coordinates every AI and city state will spawn at. There are no random spawn points as every player spawns on the earth map where they were historically.

I pick the civ I wish to play as in that XML file and change the spawn coordinates to a spot in Australia (remember the original coordinates to change it back your next game). I had a rough idea of what coordinates to use after I looked at what Sydney's spawn coordinates were.

Of course you can leave it like it is and just play a civ in their true location but for my play style I like to be alone to do my thing and peacefully expand early game and starting in Europe with 10 civs as neighbors all grabbing land doesn't allow me to do that. Again, I don't play to conquest or anything. I play to basically be a arm of the UN trying to keep the peace.

Speaking of keeping the peace, last night 6 civs asked me back to back to join them in attacking Korea (whom I had already neutered because of their aggressiveness). I said no thanks but knew I had better re-sail my pacific fleet up there. Sure enough Mongolia and Siam were preparing for war on Korea's border and my lone sub silently watching the west coast of USA detected a American fleet also setting sail for Korea.

So now, even though I neutered Korea down to 3 cities earlier because of their aggressiveness they quickly approve a defense pack with me and my aircraft carrier starts flying sorties to squash the attackers as soon as they declare. Meanwhile, my sub force is shadowing the American fleet and will be a rude awakening for them if they continue to refuse my demands that they make peace with Korea.

The weirdest thing about this entire game so far is that I am not considered a warmonger and have never been denounced! It must be because I never keep a city I capture. I gift it to the original owner or raze it. It's quite strange. 99% of the world has me as a friend and the only guarded civs are those I am at war with currently. Quite strange for immortal.

EDIT: Turning off nukes can be done in another game XML. I found out how by searching google and it brought me to a post on these forums. I forgot where now but it was a Manhattan project xml line where I changed the 1 to a 0. No Manhattan project building to build = no nukes.

I'd say that is exactly why they like you. You also do not have any direct neighbors, being all alone in Australia and all. The AI likes other players a whole lot more when they aren't directly bumping in to each other. That, and your penchant for gifting captured cities to AIs depending on each situation (instead of blatantly favoring just a couple of AIs) means everyone has benefited from your largesse big time at some point. After that and some minimal trade exchanges, staying friendly will be easy, IMHO.

Things in my game are getting pretty serious now as I have continued to step in and defend Korea from being killed off. Slowly more and more civs have declared war on Korea so in turn I declare on more and more in their defense. At this point I am at war with pretty much the entire world and none of them hate me directly - they just hate Korea.

My massive military is starting to get stretched thin as I have considerable forces deployed in Korea and now all these new fronts are beginning to open up. I did manage to get Siam to side with me and declare on Mongolia to create a new front at his border but its getting very 'fun' for me now as I feel the burden of trying to keep the peace.

I could never play like that. It's tedious enough to move my troops on a standard map but on huge ?!?! hell, no!

I also prefer the competitive side of gaming, playing it more like sports in real life. That's why I also love RTS and FPS multiplayer games, I guess.

Although I never touch multiplayer in CIV. I enjoy winning as fast or spectacular as possible against the AI. :)

What is your PC spec to play such a huge map and what turn times are typical in the "developed" stages of the game....?
Do you ever need to use the strategic view at all to help with scrolling or any lag issues...?

It seems a great and novel way of playing the game :)

The OP already said he has an older quad 4 CPU 8GB ram and turn times are 1-2 minutes during which time he watches Netflix TV on the second monitor connected to the same machine. Essentially his concept is both creative and deeply relaxing for evenings entertainment. It is a bit of a pity that the game is not stimulating enough to play without watching TV at the same time, but we do whatever it takes to continue playing civ, one of the truly great games ever invented.
Cheers

not sure why I missed that part, thanks for that :)

Each time that I have tried to play a huge type map I just end up being far too bored to continue to its conclusion. I have not thought to play the game "in the background". I'm not sure if I would want to do that.

Modern operating systems and hardware is incredible and it should be no problem to do this with a bit of tinkering. Civ5 is incredibly CPU intensive, but modern operating systems can handle the multitasking anyway.

The problem is not the hardware or Civ5, it's just that we are still a few years away from the next generation of artificial intelligence. Once we get to that stage, the OP, you and I will beg Firaxis to simplify the AI because it will be too difficult for us and the OP will not be able to watch TV or he will loose his continent Australia before he gets to turn 150.

But we are not there yet.

Cheers

You are no doubt right. I remember playing SPQR ( a mod for Rome Total War) and the latest version offers the choice of the std map or a huge one with a massive increase in the number of settlements. When I have loaded the game I'm in shock and awe of the phenomenal increase in size. However there just wasn't enough to interest me in moving across such a huge campaign map in the conquest mode.

The peacekeeping role noted above though does sound interesting and I would have never thought about turning off both the nukes and the victory conditions.

I love how you keep the peace, through war.

Watch your borders carefully. I'm sure someone in the world is going to try mounting and amphibious invasion of Australia.

Question: Do you have Polynesia on your map? If so, I assume they spawn in Hawaii. How are they doing, how much territory do they have and where? I've always wondered how they would do an Earth map with a realistic starting position. I mean, there's a lot of atolls and small islands out there...but not much else.

I keep a unit or two at each city as a 'National Guard' unit and then two destroyers and one battle ship at each of the four corners of the island as my coast guard. I also have 8 submarines far out at sea circling the island to act as a early warning to detect any fleets incoming and give me a turn or two to react before they hit my border. No one has yet to attack my island so I haven't been able to test my defenses. I assume the subs could sink many of the units before they hit dry land. My spies keep telling me a fleet is headed for my capital but I have yet to see anything.

As far as Polynesia I was sad to see they were not selected for my current game. They were in my last game when I played as Washington and what happened then was they quickly moved into California and spread from there. They also spread into New Guinea that game. They handled the island life very well and were not a pushover but the huge earth mod map has larger island land masses with atolls galore.

Ah I see. The only Earth type map I've ever played was in CIV. In that map, Hawaii was just a useless mountain with a couple of basically barren hills around it. The other islands in the map were basically just as useless. I was just curious how it worked out in CiV.

I lurk here every day - have never posted anything, but i just had to say that this is an AWESOME idea. that play style is exactly what i want from civ - i don't want to win - i want to make a fake world!! :nuke::king:

Welcome to the forum!

This is exactly how I play. In fact, I am almost done a mod called American Domination that gives me superior units to increase my enjoyment.

I especially love gifting units to weaker players being bullied only to watch them overrun their enemies later.

Super glad to see others who play it the same way I do! I'm not the only one :)

I may flirt with gifting Korea some units tonight and see if they actually use them well or just suicide them in a blink of an eye.

At least it's not a CS. Everytime I gift units to a CS they either suicide them or send them as far away from the combat zone as possible. Or the units dissapear in the CS diplomacy gifting bug.:(
