Am I Un-Australian...

...Because I didn't particularly care that the Aussie soccer team got knocked out of the World Cup?

I know this might be moved to sports, but this isn't a question about sport; It's a question about what people think about patriotism.

Earlier this week and last week, there were two major games the Socceroos were playing; here they're on at maybe 1-2 AM. Now one of the people at my school said I was "un-australian" for not getting up at the wee hours of the night to watch a game i'm not completely interested in... earlier this week the same person said i was un-australian agian, but this time for not really caring that we had been knocked out.

Now, I'm usually quite patriotic - but the reasons i'm patriotic for are never noticed as they're not generally sports-related.

My question to you - What do you think you need to celebrate be to be patriotic? Sports? Economy? Heritage?

The way England are playing in Cricket, it looks like a no contest considering they are down 4 nil to Sri Lanka in the ODIs. It will be like taking candy from a baby. Just about everyother sport that England plays in, they are doing poorly.

this is not a 'We hate England/Australlia etc etc' thread. England will be better at some sports than Australlia, and vice versa. England are better at football (soccer) but Australlia are better at Rugby.

I don't think England would play against Italy the way they are playing now. They always raise their game against quality opposition. How else can you explain why we play poorly against Scotland?

No, I'm saying that Australia lost because of a poor ref decision. But i have accepted that now. I dont watch England play soccer because I'm not going to stay up until 1am to watch a country that doesnt interest me. So i have no idea how well/poor they are playing.

i will agree that serving it up to the ref seems to be a fine aussie tradition, there was plenty of angst about the ref v brazil, and the dive v italy. Yet there was almost no mention of the penalty that Japan should have received but didn't when the score was 1-1, and that Kewell was offside when he equalised against Croatia. Both equally atrocious calls to the Italy game, but nobody saying we only got points in those 2 games because of the ref.

And usually when people are imploring you to be patriotic, to not be unAustralian, etc, patriotism has very little to do with it, and jingoism has plenty to do with it. Whether the field be sports, politics, or something completely different.
