AM6- 5CC Always War (Dare to try??)

Glad to hear you say that, Am! It is just courteous to give the AI another chance. Should we step up one level :crazyeye: ?

Definetely. I think a Monarch game, 5CC AW, on a Standard sized map would be very fun.

Too bad I'm going on vacation this Friday. :( I'll watch from the sidelines.

Preturn: Wake slave-worker north. Rome running Wealth? Changed to horse, we can never have enough.
Arggg.... Rome is at 29spt, we can't get it to 30.
Just one stupid wasted shield, sometimes it's so unfair :(
Wait, where are our Outposts? We lost both of them?

IT: Two Bab bowmen and a sword show up in the jungle.
They must have hooked up the iron again or they have another source.
A Scand. pikeman appears near our furs-colony.

650: I build a colony at the iron source north, just to be on the save side.
I build an outpost in on 'Trondheim-mountain' and send two slaves east to build
one at 'Babylon mountain' again.
I attack Birka. First I kill an archer outside the town. Our horse retreats and damages
the spear. Our legions win and we raze Birka, getting another slave.

660: Move forces towards Stavanger and Stockholm.
Kill the lonley pike with an MDI.
More exploring with the galley, but the island NE seems too small.
Move two legions and two MDI to reinforce the Babylon-front
(to pillage the iron again).
Irrigate at Cumae to get the city to size 12.

IT: Two Scand archer show up near our furs-colony and
the Bab bowman/sword-combo approaches our defensive line of legions.

670: I take both Stavanger and Stockholm, the later costs us an elite horse.
Chivalry comes in, we can upgrade 17 horses, leaving 6 in Veii waiting.
I shut down research to gain enough money for them.

680: I take out the two Bab units near our Ivory colony.
A Scand archer impales itself on our MDI behind a river.

690: Move a small force towards Oslo.
Then I move our new Knight stack, very impressive. (thanks to the 'j' button)
Move two legions on the Bab-iron.

700: Take out the next Scand archer near our furs colony.
Troop movements in the Scand. territory and of corse our Knight stack.
Two more knights are built, one horse upgraded.
Start a road towards southern Scandinavia.

IT: A Scand. archer comes out of the fog an kills a wounded legion

710: I take out the annoying archer and move additional units south.
We are making 80gpt, so I can upgrade the last horses 1 at a turn.

IT: The Babs are moving 4 bowmen in the jungle towards our front.

720: In the meantime, our Knight stack moves in their direction
and additional reinforcements are on their way (+ a worker stack)
I send a few knights and some MDIs against Hareid, where an archer is hiding in the jungle.

IT: The Scands land an archer near Rome and the Babs move their 4 bowmen in
the jungle south.

730: I kill one of them with a legion. I also take out the archer at Rome with a
freshly built knight from Antium, we get our first elite knight, then I kill the
archer near Hareid.
The rest of the mixed stack approaches Hareid and will attack next turn.

740: Upgrade the last horse in Veii, now we have only a few horses in Scand-territory,
but it would take too long to move them back. The Scands won't last long anyway.
I set research to Eng. as we don't need money at the moment.
I take Hareid, it had 3 defenders, costing us 1 MDI.
I also take Ur, knights against spears = bloodbath.

Notes for the next leader: Produce knights and... well, have fun :D
The Scands are down to 2 visible cities, the troops in the region should be
sufficient to take them out. Send our knights exclusively against the Babs.
Because I haven't seen any longbows, the Bab economy should be very weak, which
could mean that they have only a few more cities.

The bad news: Karasu and myself won't see this nice game again :D

The rest of our enemies:

And our army, not bad for a 5CC:

Guess you're right.

I'm afraid the Vikings are really down to two cities, and the Babs can't have many more.
I am also starting to believe that there are no other civs on the planet...

Taking bets on how many turns are left? ;)

Ok, lets take bets:

IF Disruptive doesn't make any mistakes
and IF the Babs are thus weak as they appear to be, I would say 10 turns
with all our knights, maximum. :D

Of course, if there is another civ on an island, we may need some more ships, which will take quite a while

I think Regent Small World was too easy for this game. Honestly, never once did I feel in this game that a win wasn't decided. That's the feeling I usually get in AW games, but with Legions I was very confident that our line would hold and that our offensive would win.

I think Monarch, Standard Map, and no super-UUs for the next game. :)

@CG: I agree, this was a pretty nice game. But you should also keep in mind, that we were not totally unlucky. We had one of the best starting locations I have ever seen.
Also, we destroyed the Germans early
and played only against 3 opponents without production bonus.

On Monarch, the AI gets everything at 90% and they get a few starting units, making early rushes with two warriors and an archer impossible.
But the most important thing: On a standard map we are facing 7 (or 6, if we play with one less) AIs. Together with the production bonus, we would face 220-260% of the units we had to fight in this game. The difficult level of such a game would be extremely high, perhaps too high.

You think that is too high? I think its good. You're right though, it will be challenging, but I think if we use a good UU (I changed my mind :p) it should be OK.

And remember, we're facing 7 Civs on a Pangea (I assume), but only 3 or 4 will send us a sizable amount of units early.

Well, while we wait for Disruptive to distribute his share of death and destruction...

I'm definitely for a tougher game, but let's not get too excited: we did have a very favourable start in this game.

I don't really know what's the best game setup for a 'next step'.
Changing difficulty level and number of civs seems pretty straightforward, but should we examine other possibilities?

It would be a nice subject of discussion, IMO. Or, well, who cares. Whatever you propose -I'm game ;)

Inherited Turn : Easy victory; perhaps I'll have the honor of getting the victory ;)

IT : The babs try to mount a last minute offensive; the vikings seem to have a galley with a settler.

Turn 1 : Two knights come into service; I plan on stopping the babs cold in their traps. Move knights around and send a galley to explore the southern seas trying to hunt down the viking galley. Northern scouting shows that the babs are most likely down to two cities. Knight attacks longbownen and retreats; however our legionaries once again are victorious =) Lose two expendable horsemen assaulting Oden.

IT : horseman fends off an archer. The viking galley is at our coast most likely going to unload troops there; no worries, I have a knight there ;)

Turn 2 : Completely halt the babylonian advance getting an elite knight in the process. I accidently pillage a road :bang: We capture odense and raze it! We also get an elite knight assaulting the final viking city. Our northern galley reports that the babylonians have an island settlement just north of their mainland cities. That threatening viking galley backed off. The vikings will be finished this turn! Akhad is captured; the babs are down to 2 cities ;) No wait; three cities they snuck one in the back! More scouting reveals the island settlement was really an isthmus. Ashur falls next turn ;) SWEET JESUS A lone spearman fends off two knights and a medieval infantry in the viking city of Aarhus. It's promoted from regular to elite! No matter they will fall next turn... hopefully.

Turn 3 : Those blasted vikings have another city or a settler on a galley. I await their demise... I underestimated babylon; Ashur held off my attacks. Ellipi fell however and the babylonians will be reduced to rubble soon. The task force that destroyed the Vikings is way too far to reinforce our babylon attack force... I fortify them to heal up.

Turn 4 : When I check the diplo screen the vikings aren't there! However I never got the message that they were destroyed so they're definetly at sea.

Turn 5 : Babylon WILL fall!!!!!! *gets all pumped up* Ashur is down to a redlined spear for defense!!!

Turn 6 : The only city remaining on the map is Ashur. The spear is going down damnit!

Turn 7 : Babylon = Dead :) :) :D [party] [party] [dance] I fortify all our units and switch production to galleys; the vikings are at sea and I'm gonna get em! I put our 3 non coastal cities on wealth and set to get engineering in 2 turns =D

Turn 8 : Oh well we get victory anyway =D

Some end of game pictures :

Jus joking ;).

This is GREAT!

Sadly I did nothing to deserve this (:() But you guys were great! Are all you guys ready to play another one in a little bit. I think we should take a small break, my little plan to get a laptop is up in the air but I will definetly get it before the 16th. DEFINETLY!
:) Hope you guys had fun, stay around for the next one, cgcannon, how long are you going to be out for, maybe we can start the other around when you come back? No?

Well done, Dis, two turns shorter than Belisar's guess :goodjob:
(btw, I didn't place any bet after suggesting the idea... ).

Well played everyone! I really enjoyed this game and I am eagerly waiting for the next: Amirsan, you *do* deserve another one.

I'll be available all summer (holidays in November this year... scary thought... ), and ready to play any time.

See you all, I'll stay tuned :scan:

Try this variant without horses .

When I saw the original idea a long time ago I decided to try it, (same civ and map size), but the nearest horses where far, far away). I quit a little into the industrial age (right after replaceable parts), but the game was pretty much won at that point. I had over a 5 tech lead, and I was about to get infantry vs knights and cavalry. Destroying knights without fast units was very tricky however, and I had to make good use of catapults and cannons to survive to that point. If infantry came another 20 turns later I might have lost, and it was always very close. I would have eventually won conquest victory, but I'm too lazy to go around bombarding with 50 artillery a turn.

Great game, everyone. :goodjob:
We really showed the power of a few core cities
together with a bit of MM and some warfare skills.

Maybe a game on Monarch, small map would be fun, too.
As long as we don't increase the map-size I would be up for
a new challenge. :)
