American UU

what a stupid thread. America's golden age "was" what a bunch of nonsense, America's golden age "still is"

UU for Americas...

Make a new tech called "Ray Guns" in the Modern Era and just put the U.S. into a permanent Golden Age after the development of an Airborne Laser.

If you're a bit squimish on that one you may want to try a UAV fighter or heavy bombing UAV. Perhaps a Space Bomber. These things are no longer science fiction, they're on the production floor as we speak.

Its time we start bringing in The New Stuff. Also, it would be cool to have Z-Pinch added into the tech tree as the pre-requisite for Fusion.

Civilization modern age is 15 years old. Its no longer modern and hasn't even adjusted for the American Golden Age which is kicking off right as we speak in the Underground. Perhaps not in Civ 4, but Civ 5 will probably need to include Nanotechnology and nanoweapons.

@kenScott
Politics aside (trust me, I have plenty to say about this), the UU is meant to appear immediately before the golden age. As such, stuff that is only just coming into production today is highly inappropriate for a golden age trigger unit.

Also, from a game balance point of view, having a late modern age UU absolutely sucks. By the time you reach that unit, either you have already lost for sure or already won for sure. It is too late in the game for that UU to make any difference.

rhialto, i disagree. Things which are new to you are old to me and we're currently in the golden age thanks to these new advances which began development over 10 years ago and have already spun practical applications which are reshaping the modern world and preparing to be "unleashed". Ask any modern scientist or anyone in R&D and the "modern age" in Civ 3 is pretty ancient.

Airborne laser weaponry is very unlikely to be reproduced by foreign countries without the expertise.
z-pinch fusion would require a decade to train foreign teams of scientists to replicate the technology and skill necessary to build and maintain their own.
GPS enables UAV fleet second to none and with a new fleet of spaceplanes coming onto the market following the X-Prize competition and the coming retirement of the Space Shuttle "Modern Age" is about to appear very old. Adaptive camouflage and nanofabrication techniques are making leaps and bounds and will likely manifest into superior building, weapons, armor, computers, and even perhaps a space elevator.

We're just getting started.

You're entering into the realms of science fiction with a lot of those ideas. Nothing wrong with SF of course, but you're speculating on future events, and making an assumption that America's "golden age" is just beginning. We don't know the future. It's golden age might just as easily be ending, and it not good to make that kind of assumption.

Not all your ideas are even American. The first invisibility suit (admittedly with some interesting flaws) was actually Japanese. And when you start talking about space elevators... I'm sorry, I just can't take you seriously.

Like I said, what's future for you, is present for me. One of the benefits of working R&D. And no matter which subsidiary nation assists in their R&D, its the American industry which will put them into mass production. Flying machines, trip to the moon, pretty science fiction huh?

You are missing the complete point. And the point is balance, not a real life simulator. It would completely destroy all sense of balance to give Americans this many benefits. Also, no matter how define these types of technologies, it would be future considering that these technologies are still in future. If you want to incorporate these types of things in Civ 3 or 4 senerios, nothing is stopping you. However, it is completely off balancing to give the Americans 20 UUs and a permanent golden age.
