Americans-Find the sex offender in YOUR Neighborhood

i did a check around campus...One works at the Washington College of Law, One works as a professor at AU (he actually used to be the university president, but got kicked out for making dirty phone calls from his office. he's a great teacher, and has since been treated. A third one lives a few blocks from campus.

weird. I thought there would be more.

Yay for a fear-driven society!

to be fair, it says sex-offender, not child molestor. A 20 year old that has consentual sex with a 16 year old, for example, is technically a sex-offender

Speaking as a former minor cog in the criminal justice system, I can tell you that aside from what the Sheriffs, Chiefs of Police and District Attorneys tell the media, the average cop and prosecutor doesn't like these websites. The reason is there are just too many inaccuracies. A sex offender moves, someone else moves in, but the database isn't updated; result: problems. Plus it gives a false sense of security; many sex offenders don't bother to register and disappear. Then we have differing standards; what constitutes a sex offender in one state doesn't necessarily mean the same thing in another state. I think that people in general are most concerned with child molesters, however, the term "sex offender" includes a multitude of sins. Soliciting a prostitute is a sex offense. Sexual harassment is a sex offense. These are misdemeanors but they still show up on many of these "sex offender" websites.

Another point. Studies have shown that child molesters are unlikely to change their patterns of behavior. Being on a list is not going to deter them from predatory behavior.

Lets round em all up and burn them on a pyre!

I once hear that in some state in the south you get to be a sex offender for 'public nudity' which happened to some women in some political manifestation.

It's witch hunting. And witch hunting that it's hard to stand up against because who can sympathize with sexual predators? Surely you must be one yourself if you're defending them?

It's nasty.

Strong words. Reading over the posts in this thread I can't see where anyone is even remotely defending these criminals. Several posters have pointed out the problems with vigilantism while others have commented on inconsistancies with the way society views different types of offenses. That's not even in the same universe with defense.

I think you completely misread my post.

People who stand up against witch hunts are always assumed to defend the 'enemies' because they stand up for basic legal rights.

I was actually the first poster who pointed out the problem with vigilantism on page one in this thread ;)

It's always interesting how we have this for "sex offenders" but not "violence offenders"
Yeah, that's what I've always thought.

349 offenders found in my neighborhood.

That is actually less than I expected. I was expecting upward of a thousand sex offenders.

Oregon won't go live until July.

This is the worst form of fearmongering I've ever seen. Do you really believe that this sort of thing is in any way positive? These people exist and by that alone we know they must at some point live amongst us, there is no death sentence for paedophiles, there are life sentences but sooner or later the majority get out. I really don't see the point of this at all? But knock yourselves out;)

The relevancy of the situation is this. Level 3 sex offenders are extremely likely to re-offend. You cant turn your tv on during the week and not see a story where some just released child rapists has kidnapped a kid and raped/killed them.

Its truly horrendous. Level 3 sex offenders should never, ever, be put back into the population in my humble opinion.

That I will agree with you on, but knowing they exist and they are near is hardly constructive really. I would say the best thing would be to put them into insane asylums untill they are no longer a danger to kids or life if they never relent. An option of chemicle castration is not a bad idea either, but I admit the lock them away and throw away the key idea sits better with in my mind.

even if say you went round hounding them or trying to kill them or whatever other vigilante action you could think of it would drive them underground, I fail to see the point of this web site?

As a parent I 100% disagree with you. That type of information is very constructive. Concerned parents should know this type of information and have access to it. Not for the purpose to picketing and protesting their presence in the neighborhood, but in order to just be aware of the local environment. That is all a part of being a good parent.
