What kind of discussion is this?
OKAY. It is TRUE . We played no major role before 1917!
But NOW we do! That's sufficing to implement the american nation in the game.
With all the wounderful things we gave to the world:
Peace, Democracy, the Bomb, TV, the washing machine, peanut butter, the eiffel tower, industrial espionage, GPS, jokes about Bush, Pizza Hut, Disney Land. World would be different without america. Less tawdry but NOT better to live in!! :)

]Got off their collective arses[/b] is extremely loaded language.

Dragged off their collective arses is more accurate - the American government did many things not to become part of the First World War.

So ALL the inidan tribes that were present in 1492 are still present today?

It is a factual statement to say that they were hunted and destroyed - genocide.

Obviously many were removed, but there are many many American Indian Tribes left, I actually work for an Native American Company :). but thank you for giving up your other arguement. And getting back to what have you done before WW1. The fact is you could say america was playing civ, while the rest of the world was at war we were building up our infrastructure, spreading our culture, shoring up our foothold and when the opportunity arose we made the most of it and established our dominance.

Well considering that landing on soil was punishable by death... It wasn't until foreigners were allowed in that economists and industrialists were allowed in, and that wasn't until the American Expedition went into port. Well I would hardly call the Phillipines a neighbor :)

Actually Europeans had opened up Japan to trade hundreds of years earlier. I think it was even the portuguese who landed and sold japanese guns ect before america existed i think. They brought Christianity with them also to Japan.

Im afraid the people saying America is young are very right. Pre 1940's America had little if any say in world affairs and no world power. Through selling arms to the fighters in WWII they made themselves 10x as rich and a world player (As the superpowers of the time crippled themselves in the protracted war)

From then on America became THE world player and is now the only superpower. I think the argument is if 60 years of involvement deserves inclusion.

I would say yes for the reasons Americas influence through their military in modern times (Which seems likely to have taken a massive hit following the Iraq war unfortunatly for the world and seems no longer a suitable diplomatic tool) and the fact they are the largest market for the game.

To me the perfect situation was if you could have your civilization break up through mismanagement and lose cities. Then make america one of the Rebel civs, so if as English your cities rebel they become the American civ. That way they could become a world player later on but wouldnt be involved early in the game. But im sure if i was American i would like to play from the start as my country!!

Sorry, actually after the porteguise (can't spell right now) arrived, Japan closed itself again. In fact Japan was far more advanced than the europeans, infact Japan was the first country to use efficient guns, but later chose to ban them as it took the honour out of combat. Saying Europe opened Japan is like saying that Portugal colonized Africa by placing a few outposts there.

Edit, I wonder how you say that the US had no influence in before WW2 when many cite one of the causes of WW2 as America refusing to get involved (league of nations, treaty of verailles)
