An icon that isn't anti-communication?

Not that difficult, Yellow C: Civ4, White C: Civ5, don't even need to look past the C to know which is which.

I have partial color blindness (tritanopia) and struggle a lot with telling the difference :( I imagine that short-sighted people find it confusing too, the icons are almost identical...

Please admins try to make the forum icons a bit more friendly to people with sight disabilities. Thanks

Wrong.

It clearly represents the majority of voters on this site.

Huge distinction.

Actually it does say a lot about the majority of people on this site. ~99.5% don't care one way or the other what icon is used (based on 761 votes in the final poll versus total members of 181120).

In reality only 0.0008% of members voted for the current icon. Complacency won out. And that's ultimately what I meant, it's reflective of the majority of members since complacency won and we ended up with a crap icon. ;)

Eh. 761 votes is one of the highest voter participation of any poll on this site ever.

Besides; what does the icon really matter? Look for Civ5 stuff in Civ5 forums, Civ4 stuff in Civ4 forums.

OTOH, it might mean most of us have other things going on in our lives and can't spend all our time here to participate in a short-lived poll that took place entirely while we were away for a few minutes. Or it might mean most of us had faith that the voters would choose something that had sufficient variation from other selections that threads like this wouldn't pop up. Or it might mean Halley's Comet is coming back a little early this year.

I don't really care all that much, but OP is right when he says the icon isn't distinct from the Civ4 icon.

I find it hard to differentiate between CIV and CiV and Civ too. I think we should use Civ4 and Civ5 and Civ to speak of Civ4, Civ5, and Civilization.

So why have one at all?

The only purpose of the icon is so that threads and news articles on a particular subject can be easily identified.

The current icon fails at this.

Be that as it may, in the final round there was only one icon that had a "5" in it and only four or five that played on the CIVV letters. If one can't tell the difference between:
[civ1], [civ4] and [civ5] perhaps they need glasses.

[civ4] is clearly a different font, all same sized letters and Yellow-White-White vs
[civ5] varied sized letters: CiV and White-White-Yellow.

I imagine Civ6 will wind up along the lines of:
CVI or
CVI
6 will read ciX cause it tongue in cheek funnier than cvi, which plain sucks.

Also it is not easy to distinguish between the icons. In one points out the differences when we put them next to each other then the differences are clear enough. However should one post an icon without the others one would need to look closely in order to see which icon it is because they are not at a glance obvious to distingiush. One needs to see them a lot in order to make the distinction by the font alone, and the color differences between the civ4 and civ5 icons are not that obvious on a mediocre monitor like the one I work on right now. Also the icons are very tiny. To our young eyes they may be clear, to an older person the differences can be hard to spot. If one has to pause in order to look closely and see what icon it is exactly, then the icon fails at what it needs to do.

Still wrong. That number of total members is meaningless. Only active members matter. If you get banned from CFC, IIRC, your account isn't deleted. And many users don't show up anymore. I suspect the number of active members is closer to 10k.

Also, I'm not sure you can chalk up not having enough free time to go onto a fan site about a video game as complacency. Try: having a life. That said, I obviously lack one. :p

More on topic; why on earth are the mods insisting that the vote be a democracy? Thunderfall has made clear that this site is really an oligarchy of sorts; why the pretense?

Yes, peoples' vote-weight should clearly be a function of their post-count :-)

The icon I wanted
entry37.gif
only got 20 votes. Now if there were more rounds and it had come down to the ones that were in first and second, I would have voted for the one in second. I don't know how many others would have done the same, but ideally rounds would narrow options until there was more than a 21% majority for the winner i.e. 79% wanting something else. But what's done is done.

In my opinion, that icon is cluttered and "CivV" is a very inelegant abbreviation.

I would be perfectly happy with the current icon on a white background instead of a black one to make it significantly different from the IV icon. Anything, basically, that fulfils the basic function of an icon - to make things tagged with it easy to distinguish.

My personal preference is for a gold "V" on a black background, since that matches the official marketing material which would be a sensible deciding factor.

Oh well, mob rules. The icon for 6 will be a pair of tits.

No. that would be # 8

It is also important to point out that the number of votes received by the only icon with a '5' in it was dwarfed by the number of votes received by icons with a 'V' in them. Not only did more people prefer the one that was chosen, but more people preferred it even though there were 20x as many choices available.

Regardless of which number you want to take, complacency still won. Even if we take your 10k number, that still means only 7% of the site voted. The other 93% were complacent.

Anyways, the icon still reflects the majority of posters at this site (note, this could also be a personal opinion of the posters of this site, or an analysis of the votes, which could it be? ;))

If you think the argument here is about the letter V, you should perhaps acquiring a pair of eyes in the front of your head so that you can read the thread.

Right, because that is what I said...

From this moment henceforth, when I need to reference Civ5, instead of using the useless [civ5] icon, I will use this one:
Facepalm.png

That icon is much clearer; and everyone will know I am talking about Civ5. :p

Thanks for the snark, Chalks. I was making a point about stylistic preference - not the character itself, but the style of icons which did or did not include the character. There were several icons in the 'c' 'i' 'v' style which collectively received far more votes than the icon with '5'. Statistically, the number of people who preferred the 'c' 'i' 'v' style was much more than the 20 person gap between the top two icon choices.

Perhaps you did not mean to be snarky and perhaps I am merely misinterpreting your suggestion that I "should perhaps acquiring a pair of eyes. . .". If so, I apologize.

See?
Facepalm.png
is already 1000x better than [civ5] in doing it's job.

I'm all for using
Facepalm.png
as the unofficial new Civ5 emblem.

The issue is that the 5 icon is almost identical to the 4 icon. Nobody cares what letters it contains. Nobody cares whether or not it contains a 5. The issue is the fact that it is exactly the same characters, on exactly the same background in exactly the same colours in a slightly different order.

In my opinion the icon that contains the 5 is cluttered and the [civ] icon is superior to it visually. If it wasn't for the 4 icon looking almost identical, it would be a great choice. However, the existence of the 4 icon makes the 5 icon ambiguous and a complete failure at its only purpose.

I must agree that the icons do look very similar. Whether this matters or not I'm not sure. Surely you would be aware without any icon if you are reading Civ4 or Civ5 content.
