An icon that isn't anti-communication?

Right, because that is what I said...

From this moment henceforth, when I need to reference Civ5, instead of using the useless [civ5] icon, I will use this one:
Facepalm.png

That icon is much clearer; and everyone will know I am talking about Civ5. :p
It is the smiley we have all been looking for!

It is the smiley we have all been looking for!

The Admins should seriously consider adding our
Facepalm.png
icon to the smiley list! :crazyeye:

I can't wait to start playing
Facepalm.png
! I hope they don't delay it multiple times like they did with Spore and SSBB. :(

I don't use any of the icons anyway when I can just type Civ4 or Civ5, but I should point out that the argument that we have separate forums for Civ4 and Civ5 content doesn't take into account that a lot of the posts in this particular forum mention Civ4.

Come off it, there was about 5% in it.

Also, if popularity was the important part of an icon then I don't see why we don't just go the whole way and get one of Brittany Spears or something. Popularity matters, yo!

The purpose of the icons is to make the forums easier to use by making threads easy to distinguish.

The icon fails at its only purpose.

All the vote proves is that the majority of people don't know what the hell they're doing when it comes to interface design.

Wrong.

It clearly represents the majority of voters on this site.

Huge distinction.

Anyway, I agree with the OP, the icon looks nice, but I can't tell it apart from the other icon without glasses. Next time, I think there should be a screening where some icons are disqualified for looking too similar to existing ones.

As much as I hate to say it, you're both wrong.

While the vote did establish a winner based on its particular method, the result was very very clearly NOT a majority. It was about 20% in fact. That means it's possible that as many as 80% of people do not want the icon.

IMO a vote that allows a 20% vote to establish a winner is a flawed one - this is the view I expressed in that vote thread.

I absolutely agree with Yakk that if we are to keep the current icon (the vote if you accepts its flawed methodology was still actually a fair vote) then at least add another icon which is indeed functional.

May I suggest creating another poll with a question something like: "Should the CFC admins include another icon for Civ5 that is easier to distinguish from other icons for other civ games?"

I personally think that these icons are kind of pointless

I usually agree but there are some specialised uses where having a distinguishable icon is useful. Two that come to mind are mod threads and PBEM game threads, but even then it's only really important once there is at least one expansion pack and hence the expansion pack and vanilla users are using the same shared forum.

But it would be kind of pointless to not remove the old icon, for then people will still use that one too...

I have no objection to people making jokes. And the CiV vs CIV icons look like a joke off each other. If people want to post using an icon that is seemingly designed to confuse readers, more power to them: I understand how this is amusing, and even possibly community building, to have a way of making fun of people "not in on the joke".

I am just requesting an alternative, for the cases where someone actually wants to communicate, using an icon, that this is a Civilization 5 vs a Civilization 4 topic. I am making this request because the current icons do not do this, other than to people who are already in on the joke.

If adding a new icon is objectionable or problematic, then don't worry about it.

(And to be clear, this post isn't because I'm upset that "my choice didn't win", it is because I observed that the icon was extremely confusing in use.)

I can't remember which icon I voted for, all I can remember is thinking at the time "oh God please don't let it be that unfunny pointless and totally unclear one", and look which one won

As Chalks said, the icon isn't meant to be funny or witty or a particularly good design or artistic or anything, it is simply meant to differenciate threads, therefore it has one and only one puropse, and it can't even do that properly. Of course, we won't get a re-vote so this thread is really just ranting, if you ask me decisions of this nature in the future should just be decided upon by the mods, that'll stop people claiming that they didn't have a chance to vote etc and ultimately they will almost certainly choose a better icon than 20%(split vote over the sensible ones if you ask me) the great members of this forum selected

*Yawn* No new ciV news for a few weeks and people are ripping each other apart and complaining about the most trivial of things.

[civ5][civ5][civ5][civ5][civ5] Looks fine to me and to administration. Good enough for me.

I almost miss the "Why isn't Poland/Spain/Australia/Sealand/Korea in the ciV vanilla version?" posts.

We already have a new icon. Picard.

. It's much more functional.

Because the world revolves around you.

The complaint isn't that the Civ5 icon is bad, or not pretty, but that it isn't functional.
Facepalm.png
serves as the [civ5] much better.

Something like this would entirely resolve the issue:

I never said the world revolves around me. I merely said I think the icon is fine. Administration thinks it's fine too so that's good enough for me. If I liked another icon but administration didn't like it, I would respect that too.

It's really making a mountain out of a molehill.

I must concede that Chalks' revised version is nice too though. He seems quite reasonable, is willing to compromise and I respect that.

I will do the same. If they do change the icon, I will support his version. --->

Here's a slight adjustment, attached below -- if anyone cares ;)

It's good enough for you, the admins (TF voted for the one that won) and about 21% of civ5 forum voters. The icon

is a good compromise.

On the issue of making a mountain of a molehill, isn't that pretty much the whole point of the civ5 forum? If anything, this topic (the choice of civ5 icon) is more relevant than usual because we are looking at how CFC is perceived by newcomers and by a large number of existing members. At the moment my honest impression is CFC is happy to be made a joke of.

On another topic, thank you to those people who do choose to use a bold V when they write "ciV". It too is a good compromise as it increases readability.

Well, Thormodr's icon is exactly the same, except for the black background...

Be that as it may, in the final round there was only one icon that had a "5" in it and only four or five that played on the CIVV letters. If one can't tell the difference between:
[civ1], [civ4] and [civ5] perhaps they need glasses.

[civ4] is clearly a different font, all same sized letters and Yellow-White-White vs
[civ5] varied sized letters: CiV and White-White-Yellow.

I imagine Civ6 will wind up along the lines of:
CVI or
CVI

Or consider: CVI or CVI
CVI with Yellow-White-White or Yellow-Silver-Silver .

Yet it is readable. It is clear at a glance that it is not the civ4 icon because of the lack of a black background. Looks good to me.
