Animals without barbarians

Here's my problem. I love the animals that you get in C2C -the notion of hunting them and capturing them and later on being able to put them to work for you the same as any other 'human' unit is neat, plus the fact there are so many different kinds (not just lions, panthers, bears and wolves) - but I hate barbarians.

However, as in the regular game, you can't have one without the other. Is there any way around this so that you can have all the different animals and stuff without having to have barbarians wandering around killing you even more than the AI does?

We have not made an option to do that. I don't have any idea how much effort (work) it would require either.

Its on my list. I feel the same way. I've grown accustomed to barbs and actually enjoy them somewhat now but when I came to C2C I was upset I had to have THEM to have animals too. So its on my list to create that option, which shouldn't be too difficult though a bit involved as there's a number of places to apply the switch in the coding. Less than a weekend to workup I think.

But its got to wait for some other projects first.

I am glad you like the animals so much. DH has done one heck of a job in the types of buildings they can make as well as help convert the animals I grab from Zoo Tycoon 2. And now with animals spawning by location on the globe it makes it that much more interesting and diverse. Plus who doesn't get a good laugh from battling a Barbarian Pigeon? :D

So that's why the animal models look so familiar!

It's very much possible (and shouldn't be too hard) to make a second Barbarian group. In fact a lot of FFH2 mods have the barbarians split into 3 or more (standard barbs (orcs and raiders)/ animals/ demons/ undead, etc). So I'd suggest taking a peek at RiFE or MoM (not sure if base FFH2 had the same separation.)

This was my first thought as well, but I didn't say anything as it was said in post #3 that it wasn't hard but not a high priority.

If I remember correctly making more barbarian nations is not simple and would take quite a bit of effort. AIAndy had a look awhile back an came to that conclusion. Each barbarian nation also comes out of the maximum nations for the game. The dll supports 50 nations or 49 players and one barbarian.

Its definitely an eventual plan to separate barb and animal nations yes. Its just going to take a lot of work to achieve and there are a lot of projects that are eventual plans ;)

Yes... I've lost quite a few Stone Throwers, Wanderers and Clubmen to pigeons. This wanderer was level 15 with a load of promotions. During the AI turn he battles a bear and defeats it. Battles a lion and defeats it. Battles a pack of wolves and a hyena and defeats them. Battles a pigeon and dies. Now it's my turn.

Well, yes, because the AI attacks with the strongest units first. By the time it gets to the Pigeon, the Wanderer is near death. Would you really have felt better if the last unit were a Wolf? The unit is dead either way.

That's beside the point. I meant it for comical reasons how gameplay vastly differs from what's expected i.e. that he died from a pigeon at all despite having .1 hp left. I'm not too worried about your comment either way as CivDad got the joke. And for that I'm happy someone got it.

The killer rabbit is available in C2C but it is off by default as it only takes one or two swipes of its paw to take out a knight unit.

I "got" it as well, but to tell the truth I've seen far too many people complain about it and it gets stale, so I decided to take it seriously.

Is there anything you DO like from C2C? Seems like you complain about everything that makes C2C different from other mods. If you don't like it go play the other mods that don't have animals or a redone culture system. Such as RoM/AND. C2C might not be the mod for you.

I think you misunderstood---I was defending the setup this time, and others are "complaining" about being killed by pigeons. I was saying why it was "logical".

I think you may be a bit testy about the Australian/American thing in another thread, which I also said I don't mind but that I could see other's point of view. I don't need to agree with someone to see their way of thinking.

I like having both Barbs and Animals. Anyway I really like the Animal System and would really love it to see it expanded further. I might have some ideas later once I get some time to play just really been busy lately.

Changing the option from No Barbarians to something which gives you a set of options for each of Barbarians, Neanderthals, Animals - Land and Animals - Sea and links to the global variables we have defined may be the way to go. With the options being a percentage or something with some defined settings.
None = 0%
Some = 50%
Usual = 100%
Many = 200%

We already have the settings for the last 3 so it is only the first we would be adding. Sorry if this a bit confused - I am still not over whatever it is I have. The doctor reckons it takes 10 days to get over it!
