I have just built an Archeologist because when I use the Map Search it shows I have several Antiquity Sites in my territorial boundaries but when I search the specified area (as shown on the mini-map) hex by hex I cannot find any. I have previously found some but they all had a small icon showing where they are (so I didnt need the Map Search) - so what exactly is the Map Search showing me?

Think we'll need a screenahot to give you an answer. Normally they are pretty obvious.

Thats what I thought. Anyway I will get you a screenshot but at the moment I am just starting a new game. My previous game was my first so I was just trying everything out and it got to the point with about 90 turns left that it was not going nowhere so I am starting a new one, I will load it up and get a screenshot probably tomorrow.

Sometimes you may have built something in the hex prior to the ruins showing up, so they might be obscured. I don't mean a mine or farm, but something like a district, wonder or even a city. I've had cities built on hexes where Oil appears later in the game.

EDIT: I'm going to check this because I can't recall having had a ruins pop up under a district. Having said that, I'm pretty slack when it comes to persuing artifacts with Archaeologists.

In my current game the Poles have settled a city called Radom on top of an Antiquity site. Pretty weird, but it happens - almost at radom *grin*!

I'll see myself out.

You can't place anything on antiquity sites and I have never had antiquities appear under already build districts. Poland probably hadn't yet researched Natural History when placing that city.

It happens more often that people think, we just do not search for them every game but instead look for where they are highlighted. Happens more than Niter.

Shouldn't they light up when selecting your archaeologist? Or with searches?

On a related note:

Are antiquity sites created on the map immediately? If you managed to get to Natural History quickly enough, ahead of the current era, would you witness antiquity sites appearing on the map right after a battle?

It is theoretically possible but there is a global param that says antiquities are 4 eras behind. How accurate it now is is a good question.
You would have to have have a battle and then pillage in natural history with a govt plaza.

Thanks I was wondering if it would be possible to have a civ/leader whose unique ability was to get artifacts earlier/easier. Wasn't sure how feasible that was.

From poking around a bit on this for a mod I made, it looks like all artifacts are placed on the map whenever the first player researches Natural History. I do not think they are created as the game progresses according to events that happen, I think they are semi-randomly scripted in at a single moment in time.

I like how you can't build on a hex hundreds of square miles large because there's an arrowhead buried there somewhere. ;)

:nono: You know the cities are represented to a different scale, cheeky.
And on that note, yes huge projects in London have partly gone on hold until antiquities have been extracted.

Is there a way to tell what era an artifact is going to be before digging? Or do I have to pray to the RNG? :undecide:

It's RNG for sure. And it must take theological battlers into account, because I've picked up artifacts from eras where I know there's no chance of a military conflict having occurred between the civ's in question.
