Any tricks for improving performance?

I downloaded RiFE a few days ago, and it's pretty awesome. Only one problem: it seems it's just too awesome for my computer. Standard maps start crashing after about 70-80 turns, while in FFH vanilla I generally don't experience crashes on Standard maps until turn 300-500. I already have all graphics on their lowest possible setting (Except that Unit animations and the special effects thingie I forgot the name of are on). I really want to be able to properly play this awesome modmod, so does anyone have other ways to increase performance other than buying a new computer?
