Anybody else feel as if there's not enough iron?

I declared war on Venice and I eliminated all units within his territory, yet I can't take the city because all my ranged and melee units take far too much damage and do too little damage to the city. I needed some sort of siege weapon, yet there was no iron in all 4 of my founded cities, and the other 3 nations I was at peace with had no iron, either. Venice didn't have iron. So all the effort I put in became a joke as Venice healed more each turn than my 5 machine guns and 5 infantry could possibly do.

"u hav 2 plan ur strategy based off wat u got"
yeah the thing is nobody had iron so it just becomes a cold war with cities that cannot be sieged
nobody to buy iron from for even 100 gold for 1 iron
AI will just outpace me in economic and scientific development while I can't conquer them or anything

Domination isn't the only way to win the game. I would think that if you hadn't seen any strategics nearby in your opening moves, you should have planned for a more peaceful means to victory? Criticisms aside, have you considered playing with strategic balance? It's also possible that your script is at fault for not generating enough strategics, but who knows?

Tough luck, but as you said yourself in jest, "plan your strategy with what you have."

I play mostly continents and there is almost always either an abundance of horses or iron nearby, sometimes both. CS are also good sources for strategics.

Resource scarcity is a matter of the mapscript involved.
I usually play the Communitas map which has resources in clumps of 1,2 or 4 and usually you will find at least one tile in your starting location. I have though played games where there was NO iron on the entire continent!

For a change I played the Continents map and was surprised to tiles of 6 Iron all over the map. This is a huge difference.

This also applies to other strategic resources: coal, oil, aluminium and uranium

You could always throw wave, after wave, after wave of men at the cities. Zapp Brannigan style.

There's a disturbing lack of a Zapp Brannigan civ on the Workshop. Perhaps it's time I finally tried my hand at modding...

Yeah, this is a valid strategy. Backing it up with some anti-city promoted ranged units, even if you can't take the city down you should be able to get a great general, and if you can't get enough iron to get your conquest going with a great general, then I don't know what you're doing with your game :D

Usually the biggest strategic resource problems I face are Coal and Oil.

I did notice the shortage of Oil in my old Russian game, even though I had completely conquered 3 civs on 3 different continents. Multiplier is good and all, but you still need some base amount for it to work.

Strategic resources are for chumps. Build warriors and settlers. Nothing else. Wave upon wave of warriors, an unbroken line swarming from my cities into those of my enemies. Roar.

I always thought it might be worth having some building that provides you with a strategic resource, like a uranium enrichment center, a swordsmith (think of Japan's swordsmiths that used special techniques to make up for their crappy iron) for iron, or a synthetic oil plant for oil.

Make it expensive so the real stuff's more desirable, but effectively allow small quantities of each strategic resource to be available at a cost to all nations.

Not bad. There is already an aluminium recycling centre.
This building is as expensive as any of its time, but it comes some time later than the resource is available in map, so you can get it, but later.

That's because it is a victory requirement resource.
