hi guys(and gals too)
:)

I'm just wondering if anyone ever got a domination victory playing on largest map, monarch level or above with 16 civs, having started out on an island(only big enuf for 10 cities). I got this island with good terrain but no luxuries or horse or iron!!!!

got great lib, colosuss, and great lighhouse. wanted to attack mainland soon..heheh:crazyeye:

once i did kick ass from an island, only that was in civ2 :)

its actually not a bad thing from a security point of view

but it dose F up expansion if theres no bigger chunk of land within reach of your galleys

Played as the Byzantines and won on Monarch this way, the beginning was harder, but well, rely on a little cheating perhaps:

Scout a bit where your neighbours are and try to make contact early on with suicide galleys / curraghs.

You will have the advantage that your only enemies will be barbarians in the beginning. No galleys, no invasion. :)

The AI also is not good at seaborne invasions.

I was able to win such a game on demigod, but not by domination. Had to go diplomatic. But it is possible to invade the mainland. I did so but then expanded much faster than my military(12-14 cities). When the Persians got tired of me founding cities to steal all the resources/luxuries, they sent their army of over 100 cavs and that was the end of my colony. I was able to keep one city, abandoned most of my other ones and rebuilt later but by then all hope of domination was long gone.

I have won this type of game with the Vikings... Just 'Zerk everything you can. It was on Emporer btw.

Not exactly what you were looking for, but we got a Conquest victory from a tiny (3-4 cities) mostly tundra island in GGF1. Yes, this was only on warlord. And, no I don't normally play warlord, but this SG was not meant to be hard, at all.

thansk fer the replies guys;)

just thought to update on the happenings...i am playing Civ3 after an extremely long break from it...last time used to play witout any in depth analysis...but now that i started analyzing the mechanics, both from forum, articles and thinking abt it, the game gets far easier, less unpredictable and more fun ;)

for a challenge i decided to carry on with this game where i am isolated on an island...never tried that...small island...u noe, the kind where if u really really try u can build 12 cities on it? i popped just one lousy hut and it gave me pottery. still terrain is grassland and there's wheat, river tiles..of course i gunned for the great lighthouse and great library. all this while pumping out settlers like crazy ;) got the two wonders then set out to meet the nearer of 2 continents...then i discovered that my island got no luxuries, reources or anything!! immediaetly targeted the japs for destruction cos they're small and relatively underpowered and yet they're sitting on really prime land with iron!

only thing is how the heck am i gonna invade someone with iron when i only got spearman?? anyway, i plonked down a settler in their midst and got a city there for staging area. Got hanging garden and while trading techs, i switched to monarchy and got GA!! to top it off, india just had spare iron and i swopped it to rush out swordman. in those days invasion is rather slow and i beat them down to a city only after a long slog..but corruption really made the game too unfun and so i edited the large map optimal city to 1000 and temple, cathedral to corruption prevention ability. got smith's and leonardo. leonardo was nail-bitingly close to gone!! ;) got sistine and also both newton and galileo in same city then i discovered the other continent and never sold my contacts til magnetism...the bully on the other continent is the aztecs while i just discovered my northern neighbor near to being eliminated by babylon...

Questions :
1) is stacking newton and galileo in same city of any use?
2) can i MPP with other civs and then declare war on my enemy to drag those MPP parties to war against my enemy?

Thanks!!

gartheaven, for your questions:

1)I'm not sure, but from what each newton's and galileo's civilopedia says, "it increases the city's scientific research up to +50%", I think it does matter(i.g.: your capital almost always is the city that surpasses the other cities to everything.

2) Of course you can. But be sure to check first if your enemy also has MMP with your allies, if you don't want all of them to declare at you. Also, if another 2 nations have MMP with each other and one of them declares at you, it doesn't mean that both of them they'll attack you: just make sure you only protect your land and not going to offence in their territory.

As for the MPP question: Whoever gets attacked in their own territory first will drag their allies in, so just make sure you let him have the first strike.

Not sure to understand what you call Galileo!
Let' s assuming you are talking about Copernicus' observatory:)
Both Great Wonder will double the science output in the city where has been built, but there is no advantage to build them in the same city. however, it would be good to build either Copernicus or Newton or both in a city where the Colossus has been built.

MPP.
Yes you can sign MPP with everyone, then declare war aginst your enemy, but you must:
- avoid to have any units within your enemy border.
- wait for your enemy to attack first, or to cross your border first otherwise your MPPs won't be triggered.

All of the science increasing improvements (including wonders) are cumulative. But, the numbers are simply added to the base multiplier rather than multiplied by 1+whatever. So, Library, University and Newton's will give you 1(base)+0.5(Lib)+0.5(Univ)+1(Newton's) = 3 times the number of beakers rather than the 5.25 you'd get by multiplying them.

i just had the same thing happen to me but i didn't get the great library i was on monarch as the Koreans and i only fit six cities on the island

hihi thansk for the info!!

just a little update...the russians, americans were finally eliminated...russians kept on escaping in caravel till they were brutally murdered by indians ;) i got a nice cash stash and managed to revamp the newly conquered jap cities to get most improvements...entered in the industrail age and most cities just gotten factory...i goet theroy of evolution and gonna pre-build hoover's dam on the jap continent! incidentally the two techs i got were actually just completed research techs which the egyptians and greecians got. gotta tech already..they were break-neck fast!! funny thing is that when i want to rail, coal is concnentrated almost totally with the babylonians and germany. since they're in jungle the AI din really road it yet. i gotta send my own workers into their territory to road it so they can trade it wif me!! am almost on the point of building enuf cavalry and infantry for an attack on india.

question: since india signed MPP with 2 other civs, is there any sneaky to attack them without drawing the ire of the allies? does demanding cities work?? or getting more allies to counteract and heck care?

thansk!

If you do not want to fight against three AIs, you can sign MPP with the same Civ than India, make sure you do not have any units within India border and declare against India. After declaring you must wait for India to send Units across your border before sending any of yours to India, that way it will trigger MPPs against them.
