I have been playing Civ4 since it came out pretty much trouble free. Its just...well.....I really prefer Civ 3....am I alone? I am glad I didn't delete it. There are a lot of things I like about Civ 4 but there is just something missing that I can't quite put my finger on that puts it behind civ 3 that keeps me going back. Anyway...I probably a member of a HUGE minority.

I really like Civ4, but I am more fond of Civ3. There are many neat concepts, but it somehow feels a little rough around the edges (especially the interface even though I'm getting used to it now).

Personally this game feels rushed by 2-3 months. On the plus side, it looks like there is a lot of untapped potential, and I have faith that an expansion pack or two will fill the voids.

On a side note, I gave my sister my old Civ3 + Xpacks last week, and my wife and son both "hate" me for it.

I was in the middle of a great Civ3 game when I picked up Civ4.

I haven't touched Civ3 since, I have completed 10 Civ 4 games (equivalent to about 2 Civ 3 games) and so far the game has continued to grow on me in the same way that Civ 3 grew on me after Civ 2.

Civ 3 is better in some ways, Civ 4 has some new qualities.

I felt Civ 3 was a masterpiece, time will tell with Civ 4.

That being said, I will not be removing Civ 3 from my system any time soon.

I think with all the expansion and mods, I like Civ3 more; but comparing vanilla Civ3 to Civ4, I give the nod to Civ4. A few more patchs to tweak the systems a little more(reworking some of the late ages tech cost was a good start) along with some quality mods and I will only play Civ4. Civ4 has a lot of potential especially for talented modders, and after the game gets more polished and finally finished  I will be happy.

the problem is that you are not considering Civ3 is a couple of years old (or more ? I can't remember), it has gone through many patches, and 2 expansions that added quite a bit of content. It's obvious that NOW Civ3 is rough around the edges, but what did you think of it at one month from its release, when you couldn't even play a multiplayer game ?

This is my opinion as well. The interface is clumbsy and the game play is so difficult, i cant enjoy the game.

There are 4 main things thats had me playing civ3 for the last week.

I can only send one unit "TO" an airport at a time. I can only move 10 tiles with railroad.

The go-to, movement functions make it difficult to move around.

After the patch, the window will not scroll up unless i put it right on the edge of the civ4 screen, if i pass it, the window wont move. (really sux)

The workers automation seems lacking. I put them on automate, and they are often on vacation. i cant find them.

Just my 2 cents.

(i have been a civ fan since 1999, when you could beat the game with a few artillary, attack units in cities with ships, and the best government was fanatics)

I agree with this.

Civ3 is seasoned now. Its been patched up good.

I guess i just expected civ4 to start where 3 left off.

I left one major item from my pervious list that broke the camels back. The option to always build previous unit. It was a patch in civ3 and i woul dhave thought fraxis knew people would have wanted it in civ4.

press alt when clicking a unit to build. A * will appear besides it in the build list, and it will build it indefinitely unless there's something in the queue after the unit.

I have played Civ3(and the XPansions) since it release till the release of Civ4 and I won't go back to it.

I do like that all those easy Exploits are gone , I love that a Game is now challenging and not an easy walk in the park. I love that you now have to think about the game to use the terrain you have and your civ-traits the best way instead of simple following an easily done path no matter what Civ you are.
I love that Diplomacy now means something, that you have to use combined Arms and vary your Promotions to get the best results. I like it that the AI now knows how to defend its cities.

I have played now ~150 hours of Civ4 and i have up until now not found 1 point where i would say this was better in Civ3(and I mean the latest version of it).

I really like the new interface.

Tons of people complained about infinite railway movement in civ3 so they reduced it to 10 in civ 4. Now people are complaining the other way round. The good thing is you can easily mod civ 4 to get railways to do what you want.

I really like the goto movement functions in civ4.

The patch may well default you to "windowed" mode now and therefore your cursor must be in the window to allow scrolling. You can always set it back to full screen if you like (edit the ini).

Cant you find your workers in the military advisors screen? Personally I dont automate my workers because there arent enough of them to bother in civ4 due to the reduced micromanagement requirements.

I havent touched civ3 since getting civ4. Civ4 is hands down better.

Civ 4 is the better in my opinion by far. However there is still something which disappoints me everytime, although less so with Civ4. Which is the lack of extra features.

Seems since civ2 both 3 and 4 have used most techs and uints from it, but in different combinations. For example

Civ3 had the cure for cancer, miniturization
Civ4 has refrigeration and supermarkets.
Civ 3 Aegis crusiers, cruise missiles, nuke subs
Civ 4 gunships.

I wish they would put all the good ideas and allow for some real epic play, i can think of 100 more 'worthwhile' techs, most of which would add something like a wonder, improvment, unit or such. Also the introduction of a future era, no matter how small would be interesting. As well as more time in each era and with each unit type, but with more stat affecting techs, i,e
Conscription gives you infantry.
Trench warfare- +10% fortified
Sub machine guns- +10% firepower
Synthetic materials- +10% health
Combined arms/mobile warfare- +1 movement
Cased Ammunition- +10% firepower
Field Defribrilators- +10% heal speed
Advanced warfare- Upgrade to mechanized infantry.

That way your not constantly changing your units but a more advanced civ would have an advantage over a smaller civ with the same unit. This combined with promotions would make an interesting combination. Obviously the bonuses would be lost but the mech infantry would be sufficiently superior to make it worth it.

Another thing would be more civ specific units. Why does every civ have longbows? True nearly all civilisations that have lasted through the middle ages had some kind of advanced bow but the Longbow (with Bodkin arrowheads) was a Welsh invention and used by English forces while most people adopted crossbows and gunpowder. Every civ should have at least one unique unit in every era. If that Civ technically didn't exist in that era then the equivilent would get it. For example America would get indian units as ancient units. Rome will get Italian units (hmm, Ariete MBT)

Really what im asking for is a bit more of everything! Oh yes and an easier way to create your own civ name. Im fed up on Civ4 of not being able to change my Civ name from my computers name!!!!! Im fed up with being called
FAMILY PC!!! No matter what name i put in! lol

You can change your name. I change it all the time. It just defaults to your computer name or whatever's in your ini file.

i love Civ 3! Civ 4 means a better computer and not much time on Civ 3. so i pick civ 3
