Me and my friend played it for a while, eventually we moved onto other things. It only comes out of the box for the Halloween special when both us re-install the game and mess around in the halloween themed world.
I never quite got into it in the same way I did later on with Lord of the Rings, but it's a decent game. No monthly fees and a good fanbase give it plus points. Would recommend just buying it.
The actual gameplay itself is instanced, so the MM part of MMORPG is a little lost. Its more like an ORPG with the ability to meet people in towns and stuff.
Here's how it works, Harb: You start out in a town. Depending on how many people are playing the game at the time, the game creates several instances of each town (called "districts") to keep the place from getting too crowded. You can switch between districts at will--and, if I remember correctly, communicate to other districts in order to get friends together with you in the same district.
When you leave town, the rules change: the game creates a new, separate instance of whatever zone you enter. That instance is yours, and yours alone; nobody except you and your group can enter that instance. Thereby preventing other players from coming along, killstealing, ganking, sabotaging your quests, or any other crap.
It may sound a bit screwy, but it works out very well.
I`m thinking of buying it. Any of my civ buddies out there, playing it?
I played it for a year or so. The PvE campaign is pretty involved and detailed, and there's a lot of nifty stuff to do, but it's easy compared to any hardcore RPG such as World of Warcraft or EverQuest.
