I must admit, even though I’ve played more than 260 hours, I’ve never finished a Civilization VI game. I've always lost interest around the Industrial Age. And that's why I'm always playing on Epic game speed.

Why? For multiple reasons.

  • I like the bucolic look of an ancient to early modern world. Rolling unexploited hills, a few cities surrounded by limited farmland and a few roads that really illustrate where the flow of goods and people are circulating between cities.
  • I like the fact that most of the land is still unhinabitated or sparsely populated. I picture myself freely roaming, traveling down the roads linking the 3 or 4 cities of my realm and just having a blast taking all the scenery in, like you do in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

  • I also think about how it will look like once it comes to the Industrial or Modern eras : cluttered with people, roads everywhere and wildlife extinct. That I was lucky enough to know the realm when it was smaller, agrarian and untamed.
  • It also doesn't help that turns get boring after the Industrial era. I don't have to move much of my units, but once the map is fully uncovered, turn get really long.
I am thinking of ending a game I started yesterday. I've reached a point where : turns are starting and ending with me hitting return and I'm spending more and more time waiting for the game to move the AI's unites around. I've taken a screen capture of my realm (as the Romans) in 730 and then 1590 AD. To be honest, I really liked it better in 790. And I should have taken pictures in the Bronze Age and the Classic Era to make comparisons.

Yeah I remember back when I played Civ3 I always wanted to mod it so that the tech tree would stop in the renaissance age (i.e. whenever you have Galleons and Frigates). I think my reason for that was just that the tech tree seemed to move too fast.

For me the game really opens up in the Industrial Age. You have settled the vast majority of your cities, you are developing your economy and improving your land while building those juicy Industrial era wonders.

Industrial Era is probably my favourite era, definitely top 2. Having said that, I almost always finish my Civ VI games even if it's clear i'm going to win, so maybe i'm the wrong guy to talk to.

I want a Civ game that is primarily the bronze age and ends about 1500 A.D.

Game would be called 'Ancient Civilizations'. The goal would be to prevent the collapse at the end of the bronze age.

Because the early game is very well designed (good balance of cost, expansion, and exploration), and the late game is very badly designed and incomplete (Condensed Tech Tree, Nonexistent AI Ability to play, lots of pointless decisions, very few things are worth building).

I've finished about 20 games and have 6 different save games that are in my "backburner" folder. Those 6 games are locked up; I'd have to put a great deal of effort and creativity into not winning those games. But it's just so tedious This has been a problem with the franchise pretty much since the beginning, and really comes into focus from civ4 onward. I had a funny thought during civ4; someone could probably make a decent living if they offered to finish people's games for them for an hourly rate.
But if the problem you're having is the length of time between turns, I'd recommend playing on a smaller map. Might not be as grandiose as the larger maps with more civs, but it's less for your processor to work on between turns and is quicker.

The only reason I don't restart b/c i'm obsessively collecting achievements where you have to win with each civ.. but otherwise yeah I would restart. Late game is so incredibly boring since I almost invariably do my military steamroll around Renaissance

After several hundred starts in VI I've still only finished one game. Many of my reasons are what the OP states - the game is won already. Sometimes I do enjoy sailing around with Battleships blazing or something, but that enjoyment fades quickly. A new map/civ/mod is always more tantalizing!

I had the same issue in V until I found the Deity Challenge Series, here is the most recent one:

(There is a spoiler near the bottom of the first post that links to all the games in the series.)

I enjoyed the camaraderie, story-telling, and good-natured competition, and it was a great way to learn tips. This is what finally got me to finish games after the age of exploration ended. Now this was late in the development of V, so the late game was more of a challenge (sort of, lol). I would think something like this would be a hit for VI once the game is better. The Civs of the Week have had some of this shared games, which I think is cool.

Until they make a game that the AI can actually play, the late game will always be a slog. Most of the difficulty and important choices are all up front.

It's sad, too, because a WWII situation... a clash of world powers using combined arms, fighting over land and ideology... should really be the climax of a game like this. But this never happens.

I usually finish my games, only quit when I'm in hopeless situation. Still miss the hall of fame though.

Aesthetically, it's the opposite of Alpha Centauri. At the beginning of the game the planet is ugly and red. By the end, you've transformed it into a lush green paradise.

I also love the look of the world when it's still unspoiled. Finding beautiful spots where you can imagine how your scout (or whatever unit you're using) would enjoy the scenery :)

However, I also like to have a fully developed empire. When cities get so big that you have to decide wether to remove a farm or mine so you can place another district or wonder.

That said, I rarely finish Civ 6 games. I can play a full game of Civ 4 or 5, or Civ: BE and finish in about 3 hours. After such an amount of time in Civ 6, I'm usually only in the industrial era...and then I look ahead and see that I still have a ton of techs to research, stuff to build...and that is too much time for one session. I just can't stand to stop playing and resume a saved game later. I'll rather start over.

I must admit that the later stages of the game are not so interesting. Now with all the features (Governors etc.), and the fact that the game kinda forces you to play wide, there's simply too much to do and I lose concentration quite soon. Especially regarding Governors, I hate the micromanagement related to them and moreover - it's not uncommon for me to have 2 unused promotions, because I simply don't know what to choose :)

Anyway, i've finished all my games. The reason is simple - I don't play too often so I still haven't finished one full game as all the leaders. And I like to get the achievements. But I think I would finish the games even without achievements, I don't like to leave stuff uncomplete (even in real life).

I'm with you. I play standard speed though, and I have found ways to make the games quicker to finish. I have only a few civs left to complete all of the specific victory achievements, and then I may also be one who does not finish games.

I think a big part of the late game largess is the punishing design of war weariness. The game engine is essentially a war game, and rather than building in mechanics which make your empire more difficult to manage as it grows and encompasses many conquered cultures, the developers instead made a dog pile mechanic in the late game. It is nice that recent updates have made early game warring more palatable, but some serious though should go into the late game so that things like WWI and WWII could happen in a game.
