[NFP] Apocalypse Mode

My physics degree is forcing me to come up with some scientifically plausible explanation of the apocalypse disasters.

Solar flares are fine. They happen and we are lucky one hasn't been thrown towards the earth yet since it could just fry most of our technology.

Meteors hitting every turn. The only thing I could think of is a large celestial body that has been unnoticed floating through space orbits near our solar system and pushes the asteroid belt into the earth's orbit. If the earth somehow ended up an asteroid belt then we could be getting meteors striking the surface all the time
Someone (private entity, not a civ) got so mad about blatant pollution they strapped a Soothsayer to a nuke and destroyed the moon.

I'm going to chime in here and say I don't have a problem with the soothsayer unit. I mean they did exist. Now did they actually predict and cause meteors to fall down on certain civilizations, no. But this makes it more fun and entertaining in the game.

I like to imagine they're just very lucky when directed, but every turn they're predicting things that don't happen unless you make it so.

10 turns in having just started.... one suspects it may be iron... that fire does not look annoying apart from walking throuigh

It seems like the ideal is to get second place, rather than first place.

Am I misreading the situation? Why would they design it in such a manner?

First place receives all awards. Silver receives only the silver and bronze awards. Bronze, only the bronze.

So first place gets a free soothsayer AND free promotion for all soothsayers AND +4 faith per turn.

I absolutely do not understand why the soothsayer unit exists. I hate it.

This is Civilization. It is a historical game. It's about humanity on earth. Why are we suddenly moving away from that?

I was flabbergasted at the cartoony nonsense in this game at earlier points as well. The religious units with their lightning and the 60s Batman style cartoony hit visuals for the melee units, but the soothsayer is crossing into a realm that is unprecedented. This has nothing to do with the real world at all.

Don't get me wrong, I love CIV6, but I just don't get why Firaxis are hell-bent on making the game nonsensical. Why move away from the very basis of what Civ is?

It's an alternate game mode purely for the sake of fun, just like Red Death.

Take it or leave it, it doesn't interfere with the base game.

Should we warn people that comets with GPS tracking into urban centers are also not realistic? :)
It’s a fun twist, but you have to embrace the apocalypse. It’s far better than the Civ4 NextWar “the planet has cracked like an egg! Game over!”

My only disappointment with Apocalypse Mode is that they didn't add "Kaiju Attack" as a new disaster.

Give those people who hate Partisans something to really complain about.

Come to think of it, "Zombie Outbreak" would make a great new disaster too, even if zombies in video games are played out.

I would get that mod.

I'm bit disappointed that the comets fall one at a time. On a Huge map it's going ot take ages before you see the world fade.

I see one of the new achievements is to be the last civ standing (presumably after the others have been wiped out by comets). If so, what victory do you get? Can you still get domination if a capital has been destroyed?

On the 6 player map, which is what i think they balance for, the comets load you up with holes pretty quick. i feel like the impacts should be passable, though. The last battalion of tanks rushing across the crater sea to wipe out the Gandhi "The Bandit King," scourge of the wastes...

My capital was wiped out and my most populous city was designated as "New Capital of Gran Colombia." I've never seen that before, so I imagine it's the work around.

I never played Red Death Mode nor have I seen it in the options because I never looked for it.
Apocalypse Mode is right in the middle of the menu so it is hard to miss.
My first 3 games with the new pass I played as Maya on Apocalypse Mode.

But none of that detracts from his point whatsoever. The devs themselves said the purpose of the modes is to have fun with being able to go beyond strict history.

And you know what? I love it. Keep this stuff coming because I'm having a blast with Apocalypse mode.

I agree. Those Soothsayer blokes are awesome - a few controlled jungle fires and I put a new city amidst 6f5p newly regrown and virgin jungle tiles. Next game I will be the most accomplished and dedicated arsonist from the get go :D

Do you need to use the Soothsayers for anything to happen? I assumed there would be passive changes but turn 100/250 and nothing has happened, colour me confused.

No, various disasters happen constantly and on their own. Have you really checked that box in the settings?
