What happened to apolyton? Why is it so dead now? It used to be booming

bump

I'd like to know the history of CivFanatics and Apolyton. People keep referring to it, but what happened?

The history is: they are two (possibly rival) computer game fansites. It's as exciting as that...

Apolyton was awesome in the past.

Why is it fading?

It has stalled at times and in some respects, but I don't believe that it is fading.

I find this place is more intuitive to use, i guess the game alone helps, tho usuall reviews etc do mention both sites.

Anthing up your sleaves to bring the masses back? Banking on Rev?

CU meaning CivUnited? They have 133 users and Apolyton has 93,638. We, of course, have 130,916.

Well at least people have heard of us now. If you read Ball Lightning's sig up until last week, you will realise he runs CU with me.

I'd like to know the history of CivFanatics and Apolyton. People keep referring to it, but what happened?

Apolyton's roots go back to two distinct Civ2 websites. Dan's "The Ultimate Civ2 Site", and Markos' "The First Greek Civ2 Site". (Both can still be seen if you use archive.org and you kow the old website URLs) Dan's site was full of maps, scenarios, and civ stories, as well as a forum, which seemed to change with each new domain name. These sites started back in the mid 90s. As the years went on (roughly 10 years ago), they merged into Apolyton. Apolyton's distinctive "engineer's drawing" on the main page was made back in the TUC2S days.

CFC got its' start around 2000. There is a history thread somewhere, probably in Site Feedback. It was around in time for the first wave of Civ3 players. By the time Civ4 came around, the RNG (random number generator), err, Google, kept showing CFC when people were searching for video card issues with Civ4, and found CFC.

CFC has always been a more structured, and clean (not cluttered with ads, and millions of ad-ons) than Apolyton. But, Apolyton has been known to have more strategy discussions than CFC. Conversely, CFC was the major Civ3 scenario/mod site.

I find this place is more intuitive to use,
I won't argue with that. Our site has an older infrastructure leading to a great amount of man hours and expertise to overhaul (which will come).

CFC... has always been more consistent.
In what respect?

Making the site a little more... colorful?
More colours? Different colours? A matter of opinion, of course, but I don't think so.

Chieftess, your brief summary is very good but I'm curious to know what you mean specifically by "more structured" (so as to avoid miscommunication). That said, I do disagree that Apolyton is "cluttered with ads". I don't believe we have more ads than CFC does, at least today, nor are our ads laid out poorly (or CFC's for that matter).

If you want to argue that we have more ads, than there's an important distinction between Apolyton's operation and CFC's to make here financially: Apolyton has been independent of any gaming network for more than four years. In that time we (first Markos and I, now I) have been and are continuing to be responsible for our hosting bills as they are not covered by a network. Then there are other costs too... (e.g. software, domain names)

Because Apolyton has been made up of various different sites that emerged over the years. It also changed domains several times.
Ah. I believe I know what you're getting at, but I think a better word is "cohesive", not "consistent", and I will agree with that -- to an extent -- on the composite sites.

Apolyton was originally made up of 2.5 sites (the 'half' being my CivI site) and then a third with our Alpha Centauri coverage -- that's a few, not "various" in my book :) (and the latter is the 'latest' from 1999). The site has had three different hosts to date, but has changed domains only once: from a sub-domain off of our first host to its own and current domain. That's not "several". :)
