Appreciation Thread

thx from a lone stoner too :)
these forums helped my gameplay a lot, but also provide entertainment on their own.

I've been away or a bit, and back now. I actually missed these forums :)

I must admit I have never been on another forum quite like Civfanatics, I think it probably does have allot to do with the type of game Civ is. It attracts a more (mentally) mature audience than allot of other games such as Halo (same for all shooters), or even "WOW" where the people tend to be a bit brain dead from the intense amounts of mindless clicking.

I am also relatively new to these forums and I am also impressed already. Nice people, good discussions which, even if heated, never become personal (well, mostly;))

(The only comparable experience I have is the official Oblivion modding forum. Hell, there are crazy guys (and some girls ;)) which seem to dedicate their life to modding and assisting players in the forums. I was and still am impressed.)

That's actually the right amount of posts to trust. Anything more and you've got a forum junkie not a civ Junkie. I personally haven't played a game of Civ in over two years. And if we go to the others in top five we find:

For a long while I was going with more posts/day than you but you have been around much, much longer.

I burned out somewhat from averaging 17+/day (more like my time at a graduate student job ended after graduation ) and am now probably somewhat more like a normal addict ;).

Averaging >10/day for over 5 years is pretty incredible. That's not determination, dedication, or an attempt to prove anything. The only thing it proves is that the person is doing something he/she likes a lot, which is a great thing as long as it doesn't involve crime!

Wot? No appreciation for the moderators who seem to have found the right balance between laissez-faire and keeping behaviour reasonable?

Great point!

Yey admins

I 2nd that, I haven't seen a better moderated forum anywhere on the web... I wish other forums would follow your example :)

I love these forums, so many knowledgable posters. I have learnt so much from lurking all these years and I have actually started posting now. Civ Fanatics is great! Thank YOU!

Yeah, these forums are great! I started lurking in '08 and was a mediocre Monarch player. I could win sometimes but it really took some "luck". But after reading some stuff here I realized how much I was missing out and was really able to fine tuned my game, particularly with city specialization. Now I play pretty well on Emperor. I don't win every game, but I'm much more aware of what is going on and know the reasons why I may win or lose a game instead of falling back on "I hate the AI! They always cheat and dogpile me!".

This forum has helped me with:
specialization
whipping/chopping (back in the day, I rarely used this)
diplomacy
tech priorities
worker priorities (food)
early rushes
overall warfare
seige, seige, seige (rarely built in the past)

I could go on an on....

I mostly just lurk in S&T as I'm just not knowledgeable enough to contribute anything really meaningful in this little section, but I actually spend more time here in S&T reading than anywhere else on the forums.

I certainly wouldn't have made it to Prince without the help and advice of some of the people here, though. If I hadn't found CFC, I would have given up Civ a long time ago.

I guess you only have yourselves to blame...

 :p
