Well, this looks very interesting. I am a quite a fan of the whole Tolkien universe (Read the Silmarillion a few times, if I do say so myself ) and would like to see this become a mod. Though I am not so much a programmer, I would like to help with some of the "content" (Wonders, technologies, cities, etc., the finer details) if you don't mind.

One thing I would like to recommend is changing the Sauron worship to paganism (as someone previously said) and the Valar worship to Eru/Ilúvatar worship, who was the all-powerful creator god of Arda. No one really worshipped the Valar, at least those who knew that they were only the powers of the world, and not the creators. Anyone who did worship the Valar probably considered them "gods" and might as well be considered pagan.

Okay, that probably sounds contradicting but isn't it similiar to everyone on Earth having a different 'idea' of the higher power(s)?

Also, lays, which are basically song-tales, could be made into national wonders. There are quite a few importany lays/tales, two of my favourites being the Ainulindalë and the story of Beren and Luthien. I'm not quite sure how it would exactly work, but it's an idea.

I'll be searching through my books and websites for more ideas.
This is great news to here, I was going to be looking for someone with a really good Tolkien knowledge to do the Civilopedia entries.

Talk to me in MSN sometime, and if you know as much as I think you do, you can be our official Civilopedia Writer :goodjob:

hi folks, have an advice for you, go to the www.totalwar.org Rome modding forum and then to the lord of the rings mod and ask if they will give you some models, so anyone in your team related to 3dgraphics can add them to civ4 (wont be a problem, because most of them use 3dsmax too!).

would be a start so...

lol I've seen that mod, and those models are WAY too much for Civ4 to handle.

IamSid: Yeah, I've seen that thread. Still, we aren't really at that stage yet to be modelling. We still have the first mini-release (which should be out in no time) and the tech tree to worry about first ;)

*Feels a little insulted that NAU didn't mention my "extensive Tolkien knowledge"*

Actually, you are quite wrong, people certainly worshipped the Valar, at least the Eldar. but perhaps not in the way that we would worship our gods today. The Vanyar worshipped Manwë and all Eldar worshipped Varda Elbereth, Manwë's spouse...

Anyhow, NAU and the other dudes here don't have a clue what Tolkien is about, I have to correct NAU all the time  So I guess it's good if we get some more smart people to hang around here...

Anyhow, if you want a lot more information on Eldar and everything else in Arda, go read HoME, History of Middle-Earth (if you haven't already). They are really good, though they're 12 volumes, but I'm sure you can handle it, as I did and english is not even my primary language.

Also, NAU, I got clearance on that second age mod, so I'm on stand-by on this mod for now. I'll povide you with more info later, when I know for sure what's happening with it, but I know that I don't have time or lust to work on two different mods at the same time.

You are right, they did worship them in the sense of devotion, adoration, and respect, and if I remember, they often called upon Elbereth. I just meant that people didn't make sacrifices (except towards Morgoth?) or totally submit themselves to the Valar.

Yeah, I've heard of HoME, I suppose I should get around to reading them sometime.

We didn't mention your Tolkien knowledge cause that knowledge is shown in your art. Feeling insulted sounds a bit too over-the-top I'd say.

Without me and Rodrigo, there would be no Arda Mod. Not every modder HAS to have skills like you wish every modder has you know. The thing is me and Rodrigo at least know how Civilizations works and how the tech tree can work.

Yeah we have a "clue" as to what Tolkien is, I've read the books. I'm sorry you think we're not "smart".

Btw I thought you said you'd wait till the first release was done before you'd decide anything. What changed your mind?

Well whatever, its your choice. Just cause your leaving doesn't mean this mod is dead.

IAmSid: Well, there was a possibility that it was supposed to come out today, so I'm sure tomorrow it should (just don't take my word on it).

I was just kidding about that clue thing you know... Whatever.

I never said I was going to leave, just that I am on "Stand-by" for now, since the 2:nd age mod hasn't really started yet (it will soon). But it is likely that I won't have time to wor on both mods. Sorry. But I'll stick around until I really decide.

Idea guy, who's name I can't spell:
You really should read HoME and other of Tolkien's works for that matter. I can't say I've read them all, I only have 5/12 of the HoME volumes, and I've read those, the other 7 are almost impossible to get in Sweden, it sucks.

Books that are really good and are worth the time reading them is:
Silmarillion (OBVIOUSLY!!!)
Unfinished Tales, if you are not english or live in an english speaking country it will probably go uner another name.
Morgoth's Ring (from HoME)
Peoples of Middle-Earth (from HoME)
Shaping of Middle-Earth (from HoME)
Book of lost tales 1-2 (from HoME)

Then there's a bunch that are kind of unnessesary and are just repeating alot... Some are even boring:lol:

That's it;)

Also, "The world of the ring" (if that's the english name, I'm not sure) is also really good, but it's not much about Lotr but rather other works from Tolkien.

Also, don't buy books that are not made by Cristopher or JRR Tolkien, they aren't really reliable:lol:

Seriously this sounds really cool.

I love Lord of the Rings and this mod seems to have enormous potential. If you need any help, I would be glad but I won't be able to do a whole lot considering I'm also working on the Star Wars Mod (see Signiture) But very nice work guys

A mod always needs more help ;)

Anyway, my latest concept art for this mod, and perhaps the last :(
It's a Doriath Axe Carrier, they are mentioned in the Silmarillion when Mablung and Beleg rides to Nirnaeth Arnoediad. And I purposed to NAU that we should add them, and he liked it, naturally

Well, Honom, you are an excellent artist! It would be nice to have you on our team, but if you have other things to do, it is understandable. Thanks for your work thus far.

Thankee :)

Anyway, thought I should mention since it doesn't really shows, but it's elven rope that hangs over his shoulder. I don't know if this game's units uses abilites, but if so, elven rope could be one.

Well, I don't know much about Civ4 gameplayed since I've never tried it, but there are some buildings that could be used.

The Noldor could use the white tower of Ingwë in Tirion as their wonder, since they often refer and long for Tirion.

Sindar, greyelves - Menegroth, not sure how it would work though, since it's caves.

Gondor would have the argonath off course. I have more but I'm in a hurry

I don't know really, will each faction get a different wonder each new stage (civilization) they enter or will there be one lasting the whole time? If so, it's much easier.

Gotta rush! God speed!

Thanks for your replies Honom, but programmatically, it is much easier now to focus on keeping things simple and doing 1 civilization lasting through all 3 ages, so 1 wonder for each will be fine.

The mod can always be made more complex later, if possible ;)
