Are you happy?

I knew you were going to say 'both'. 'Both' is a cop-out. Youre mistakenly equating the absence of discomfort/pain/hunger, with happiness.
No.They are synonomous of each other.

Satisfied and being happy is the same.It is a state of being contented.:deadhorse:

Your Honor, I recommend we take a lunch recess.

Judge: Agreed. Court will reconvene in 30 minutes. Mr. Fart, please remove the dead horse from the courtroom. [/gavelbang]

I think that for people to say that theyre happy most of time, it means that they dont know what happiness is. One of the things that makes happiness so great and special is that its such a stark contrast to the way we usually feel. If its your default state, the word is meaningless.

The way I see it, your either happy or unhappy. to diferent degrees. But I don't see anything in the middle. So if your not happy most of the time, it means your unhappy most of the time...

I see what you describe more as Joy then happiness.

Wow, I can't believe how much I disagree. Why would you think that it's impossible for someone to be happy most of the time? That if they feel that way most of the time, they don't know what they're talking about? How are we supposed to usually feel? Why would the word be meaningless just because someone is happy often? I spent most of my life as "eh", went through some cycles of "eh" and depression, and now I've reached a point where I'm much happier than "eh", and I consider myself to be happy most of the time. I know where most peoples' default state is, and where mine has been. I'm much happier than that, on the average. Today? PMS. But last week I was, and next week I probably will be, rather happy. If you can't appreciate that, or can't feel that, I hope someday you will. :D

In reply to Bozo as well, if you think happy as a default state renders the word meaningless, that's, pretty sad. Now I'm not saying most or even a lot of people ARE usually happy, but if they were, happiness wouldnt be any less special, people would be, much happier!

So what's your default state? Meh just plodding along another day going by my existence is dreary or at least just, whatever?

Truly most people's normal state is like that, but it is Entirely possible for someone not to be so glum and actually usually be, appreiciative of the beauty of the world that thrives even amidst all the ugliness and the niceness of people amidst all the jerks and morons and idiots and the wealth of questions and answers there are to be asked and to mull over that makes one contemplate things, which makes one realize the sheer brilliance of it all, which in itself is a state of happiness and appreiciation. Sure your day at work could be boring, and your just milling about and feeling like meh, but that meh is not an all encompassing meh, its a meh at this moment while you're overall feeling happy at just, life in general, because you have a girl to look forward to seeing or friends who are fun to be with or projects that fascinate you and music thats just fun to listen to and that place over there was just beautiful and the people are on CFC are just weird and what not and so forth. That can be your state, and it being so wouldn't render happiness any less special. Now when you're actually out with your girl on that empty beach under the starlight and feel like its just the two of you in a small moment of eternity that will pass but right now feels like its all and everything, that's not happiness, that's elation.

On that point, however, on average no I can't say I'm happy, none of the above is from actual experience... quite the opposite actaully.

Very, went on a successful date today :)

But ive already answered that question twice in this thread.. and i had to gloat somewhere. :smug:

When you are playing a video/computer game/watching a movie/reading a book/you get what I mean, are you happy, or just entertained?

if it's good then 'engrossed', i can feel i'm part of what's going on (and if it's civ i take things *very* personally!). to join the general OT meandering; i'm happy because i have two consecutive days off work now. but, work has broadband, i'm now on dial-up. just shows, nothing is ever *perfect*.

Same here. Minus the PMS.

I've never been better!

Guys, when a person is asked, "Are you happy?" the common tendency is to evaluate ones entire life, and then decide if one is 'happy'. What Im saying is thats the wrong way to approach the question. The question 'Are you happy' can only be answered meaningfully in the moment, because all of our emotions are momentary. There is no such thing as a permanent emotional state. Even people who suffer from chronic depression arent always crying. Emotions come and go primarily as responses to external stimuli. Introduce a certain stimuli, lets a say a pic of somebody being killed, and that will generate an emotional response. Show a pic of your loved one blowing you a kiss, and you'll feel another emotion. Remove the stimuli, and the brain stops producing the emotional response. In reality, most of the time, we're neutral, neither happy, sad, angry or anything else. To say 'Im always happy' betrays a very fundamental misunderstanding of what happiness is and how the brain functions.

See, I would have to flip those two things. Life in general has me feeling "meh", if I think too hard about it, while at any given moment I usually feel happy about that particular moment.

Even if you're the court-appointed guardian of the concept of happiness, I don't need your permission to be happy. You can walk away from this with the conclusion that I don't understand happiness, and I will walk away from this with the conclusion that you don't understand that with the right disposition it's possible to be happy most of the time. (Nobody here has said "always".) :deal:

I like that smilie. Lucy, Im just the court appointed guardian of my opinions. Aint even my thread, Im just replying like any other taxpayer;)
