Ares de Borg's Terrain Pack II: Preview Thread

Another thing, is that brown stuff supposed to be plains? Look rather like vegetationless dirt to me.

Well, they're dry plains...

I like them that way.

And grass tends to grow tall in nature...

Well, I'll see what I can do if you guys think it's too knobbly... but don't expect me to change everything, please. I'll do some tuning here and there - where I agree with the criticism. ;)

What about some colouring of flowers to go with the long grass? Trying to think of compromises here (and when they fail just stick to the criticisms you like :D ).

I rather agree on the "too knobbly" front. :p

As for seas, there's a terrain mod out there which has continental shelfs for Sea and deep ocean for Ocean. I can't seem to find it ATM, but I like the effect alot. Maybe something to consider? :)

Edit: The terrain I'm thinking of is in Anarki's mod, but unfortunately he hasn't included a credits file. Also, I was misremembering - only coastal tiles are shelf, both sea and ocean are deep water.

snoopys? Personally I dislike it, though.

Heh. You must be European. We have Great Plains over ehre. They're great. Though your plains do look like good deserts. Maybe you should lighten them up some, maybe do some other modifactions to make them look more diferenter, then you'd have custom deserts, too!

Its good greatfblfkn'; I can't even type its so right. I remember as a kid when this arcade game called Pitfighter came out, seein the "realism look" just shocked my senses and changed how I thought of video game graphics forever, you gave me that same feeling. I never imagined seeing satalite terrain in my favorite game Its groundbreaking, glass raising thank you Man Im speechless. this is special.

Rhye's "greener" Terrain(A compilation of everyones) I thought would never get beat, it just got reassigned as back up on my drive.

Oooooooooo. Ahhhhhhhhh. Dang this is so nice it's making tears roll down my cheeks.

(Well, maybe not tears...)

Very good! :D Man, I am downloading this when its ready! :D

Ares, this is truly a work of art. Better than all the others. (Rhye's greener) and all. Snoopy's and all. This one beats them all. The jungles rock, and the coast and water looks awesome.

here is one I found in the grafix mods along time ago. It's got a shelf between each deepth, however i think the bottom could use some textur. Hope this helpful;) View attachment 124026
If anyone knows who made it say so, so that credit can be givien, I don't remeber and can't find it in there now.

Ares: I think you can take all these suggestions as confirmation of what a great and essential contribution you're making here. People are making these suggestions because they love it!!!

That's da Snoopy.

I like this one muuuuuuuuch more than the first one. It's really great. Even if I don't think anything ever would make me change my graphics from Snoopy's terrain, this one would be a strong candidate!

BTW, In the first pic, the map looks like the coast of Britain and France (or is it just my imagination?).

Some real comments after looking better at the pictures:

- You might consider changing the plains_forests (or however the file is called). Please, make that trees different than how they are now. Give them more branches, more anything. They look too empty.

- I like the grasslands. :hmm: Really.

- The coastline seems improved

- I really like that forests that appear near hills (or are they just pine forests? I don't know, I like them.)

- I know this is a big change to make , but I think everything with vegetation is a little too green. This has 2 major consequences: The jungle is harder to see than in other terrain packs, and the difference is too big between grasslands (or hills or forests) and desert. You see something deep green and right near it some strange light.

- Again a big and hard change to make (maybe even harder): could you make a version with that Snoopish difference between sea and coast? It would be fantastic to have this incorporated (or in a different variant of your terrain)

- I like the irrigation

- I really like the plains graphics

- - These are just comments. Do what you think it's better. This is how I would make it, but I didn't make so good terrain so probably you know better what to do.

Anyone with basic graphics skill could always add snoopy's grassland trees themselves. :)

@Ares: Any updates? No hurry, I'm just asking.

Ok, I may do the following:

- Change the sea tiles with some based on satellite data for improved realism.
- Modify the plains and add some vegetation.
- Improve the grassland texture.
- Improve the desert texture.
- Improve the river deltas.
- Improve the forests.

I guess I won't add any continental shelf effect because this isn't realistic. You just can't see it from an aerial viewing position since the ocean isn't a swimming pool with ultra-clean water.

@ All: Thanks for your support and comments!

Okay guys, you really gave me a LOT of work.

So far, I've totally, and I mean it, reworked the water. The old texture is GONE. I have to redo the coastline from scratch what means three hours on the old files were for the bin.

The grassland texture was reduced by 25% and applied by hand to the "old" one tile by tile because of terrain features I don't want to lose. It looks way less knobby now and I hope you're pleased because after that, I won't do it again.

I'll keep you updated.
