Arid Map first 100 turn gameplay

Brasilia landed really really close there. They will certainly need dealt with sooner rather than later, that's for sure. Makes for an interesting game. Your whole strategy might need to change at that point. Very interesting.

If I were playing that game, I would definitely switch my attention to defeating Brasilia as soon as possible or at the very least containing Brasilia until I am able to defeat her. You definitely don't want to let Brasilia build up their military with impunity. That's like having the Zulus near you in a civ game and leaving them alone. You are just asking for trouble!

It looks like he got affinity point towards Purity(like 25 points? he got 2 levels from 0) by clearing alien nest for the second time. And aliens became full hostile (red unit icons) at the same time.

So killing aliens not only give XP to your units, but actual upgrades!

I am not sure that the affinity points came from clearing alien nests. He did have a lot of quests that gave affinity points. I think it is the quests that gave him the 2 levels in affinities.

Yeah, earlier he had the quest where he chose to erradicate the aliens, giving purity points.

He choose towards Supremacy, and none gave him affinity points. Also, there is no 'quest completed' notification that turn.

Edit: Actually there was a quest notification. I missed that.

He also got the quest about whether to contain an outbreak of an earth plant and then follow up quest about whether to genetically engineer the plant to produce more food or more energy that gavee affinity points based on his choices.

OK. What gave him purity affinity points was 'Occupational Hazard' quest, he chose Eradicate option and clearing an alien nest completed it.

What this shows though is that while techs do give most of the affinity points in a game, quests should definitely not be ignored as a source of early game affinity levels.

There is an interesting quest that I don't think we've seen before (when you build a clinic). It is at the 28 mn mark in solar gamer's part 2 video.

Here is the text:

Since opening our clinic, the populace has been split in an ideological divide. Securing and improving our new territory has put great strain on both our military and civil work forces and both contend that the hazards they face should be offset by state sponsored health care. Our fledgling colony does not have the resources to do both.

Which then has the greater need for aid?

-Provide care for defense workers. (+15 city hit points from clinics)
-Provide care for civil workers. (+1 health from clinics)

Would it be that shocking if Rejinaldo spoke Spanish ? The majority of Latin America's population speaks Spanish after all, and the south-eastern part of Brazil already has the mixed "portunhol"... once again, need I remind you guys that this is in the distant future after a cataclysmic event : things change, language being one of them. I wouldn't be shocked if Elodie spoke something other than French, because you know, this is not a historical game.

It's not really shocking, but people will complain because it's arbitrary and an already sensitive topic.

Paying attention while he hovered over the Quest Complete popup after deciding reveals that the Quest's called "Blood Bank".

Thanks! I am really liking the addition of these quests. They seem to add some interesting choices, like this one that essentially let's you specialize a building.

EDIT: Just finished the Northernlion's gameplay and I simply cannot believe that Rejinaldo speaks SPANISH. I sincerely hope it is just in the first greeting.

I think the fact that some of the leaders will use a mix of languages was already mentioned:

"Their leaders represent this multicultural mixing that happens, a lot of them speak a mixture of languages, for example the American Reclamation Corporation, the sponsor that you can pick for that, Suzanne Fielding, speaks a combination of Spanish and English, sort of interchangeably, a lot like how everybody swears in Chinese in Firefly, you know, it tells a lot about what happened without saying much," Miller points out.

Wow, the game really does look way too much like civ 5 :( I guess I knew that and didn't really expect miracles, but still I'm disappointed. Gonna get it anyway of course, but quite disappointed.

Except that Rejinaldo does not speak a word of Portuguese. He speaks only Spanish in the three lines (greeting, trade offer and defeat) shown at the gameplay.

It is really disapponting to see this considering that the name of tha faction, the city's names and the leader's surnames are all VERY lusophones and Brazilians. Then he simply start speaking perfect Spanish. In a pop culture where Brazil is frequently presented inside the Spanish-speaking latino stereotype whose capital is either Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro, this kind of thing is unwelcome.

I always defended an OSAS faction instead of a 'Brasilia' faction and really looked forward to see more South American city names. But since Firaxis decided to made it all Brazilian, the leader should be all Brazilian too.

And this whole language question became even more random whith Kavitha and Barre speaking English. So we got four English-speaking leaders, one Gibberish Russian-speaking, one Spanish-speaking (with all the problems I mentioned) and one Mandarin-speaking. Let's wait to see what Élodie will speak.

I'm just curious, what were you expecting? Were you hoping that they would get rid of hexes? Get rid of 1upt? SMAC social engineering? SMAC terraforming?

While the game might look graphically similar to civ5 and have some similar features like 1upt, I think the affinity system, quests, and virtues will definitely make the game play very differently than civ5.

Well we could justify that Kavitha speakes english due the fact of the English colonization and that English is one of the official languages at India nowadays.
Barre could be from South Africa what puts it in the same kind of old colony to justify their English
But give Rejinaldo not a line of Portuguese is a shame, specially since the great deal of care they put into Civ V diplomacy.
Well we have a rocket flying from Rio de Janeiro as if it was our capital, let the stereotypes rule, and think that we learn Spanish in 200 years to equalize South America

To be fair in that trailer we can hear and read a lot of Portuguese in the ship being launched, and I believe they showed Rio de Janeiro only because it's more scenic and famous than equatorial Brazil.

Also, we don't know if Rejinaldo really don't speak a single Portuguese word in the game, but if this is true for him and future Brazil, then I agree with you that this is a very unlikely future, even taking the Great Mistake into account.

If he really doesn't speak a word of Portuguese, then something will be wrong, but I can see him only using it a little, on account of Brasilia being a conglomerate of all of SA, which is predominantly spanish speaking. Still, similar logic could be applied to the ARC to be mostly spanish with interspersed english, but they're claiming its becaue the 'dominant' portion is the US, which is english... which loops back to Brazil being dominant and speaking portuguese. There is an excuse/explanation for it, but its a very weak one either way.

As for the rocket being launched near Rio de Janeiro, I think that's just put down to it being instantly recognizable with the Cristo Redentor, much like how the others were launched near the Pyramids at Giza and the Eiffel Tower.
