I've heard both good and bad from it. Apparently the AI is pretty bad but perhaps the mods can fix that? A plus though is the sheer scope of it. I'm debating on whether to buy it or not. Thoughts? :crazyeye:

The AI isn't really any worse than any other game, however it is rather noob unfriendly and can be a bit clunky at times. It is a very fun and rewarding game that requires teamwork to succeed, but you do need to have people to play it with.

Would it work well as a LAN game with 4ish people? I really have no interest in playing online. Thats why I have Battlefield 3 :D

I played it a little bit when it first came out and didn't like it too much; the sensation of having every key on your keyboard bound to 3 different actions kind of turned me off from it.

Check out Armaholics for their extensive scenario mods. ARMA2 is a great game. In fact I found that after playing ARMA2 for a while it improved my ability to compete online in other games such as COD:BO and BF3. You learn to think like a real soldier playing ARMA2.

The quality of the mods is largely pretty bad. The zombie AI is pretty bad, they can walk through doors, attack through walls, and both them and the survival needs don't do much to keep the players from turning it into a PvP/grief fest with absolutely no teamwork between people who aren't already grouped up on VOIP. Its very buggy and glitchy and filled with hackers.

ARMA 2 is not a mod for DayZ.

Sarcasm. :p generally denotes it being used.

Anyways, DayZ, as Manical had hinted at, is a love it or hate it mod. It requires time, effort, and planning in order to not get buttraped at the beginning, but once you starting getting the feel for it, it's really exhilarating. And personally, the PvPfest actually is part of the charm of the game. Society would devolve into everyone trying to shoot and kill you for a can of beans in a zombie apocalypse.

It definitely wouldn't be every single person out for only themselves. There would be soem violence sure, but most people aren't hardened and indifferent killers (or playing a videogame) and there are far more pressing issues and other activities to do than just shoot people and do a little bit of scavenging. DayZ offers absolutely nothing to do besides enjoy the scenery and shoot other players.

Its fun for a while with a group, but that's about it. Rocket is supposed to be addressing those problems in the stand alone though. which hopefully he will.

Yeah, almost certainly it would not. Groups are always more survivable than roaming individuals in the real word. It's why we're all leaving in societies now.

IMO Arma 2 (and all the series starting with OFP) is the best shooter without question. It is more of a sim than a classical shooter though, so Arma is to CoD or BF about the same as Live for Speed to Need for Speed. Multiplayer can be very different from other games. The ideal way of playing it is in cooperation games, that way it is as being in a modern real war, so real time voice communications are a need.

Sadly two developers are in jail in Greece charged with military spionage  so probably the next release is going to be delayed...

If you have the right people to play with its really fun. There's nothing like coordinating an attack on an enemy town using a variety of resources and tactics.

Single player is less fun but thats because I generally dislike controlling AI team members.

I would say buy it ;)
