Armies

I assume you are selecting the unit you want to load, not the army?

Actually, now that I think of it, this might be the problem. I will have to look into it and get back to you.

I have a related question, I think. I was recently playing Civ3 (standard, only military great leaders) and got a leader very early in the ancient age. Didn't even have iron yet, I got the leader from a hoplite. When I got my leader back to my nearest city, I didn't get the option to create an army, only to hurry a project. After moving him to the capital it's still the same deal. Has this ever happened to anyone else? And if so, is there a reason for it or is it a glitch?

IIRC you need to have 4 cities for each army you want to create/build.

That's correct. Well remembered, tao. I was having trouble with that question.

An army of ALL marines will be able to do amphibious assaults. Elite units in an army don't seem to generate new leaders as often as elites attacking on their own I read somewhere here.
March or Die!:wavey:

Speaking of Marines, when using Marines on an amphibious landing, do they take on special qualities? And if they don't, why would you use them? When you have Marines you also have Rifleman, who are much more powerful.

A marine can attack units in a city directly from the sea. A rifleman or infantryman has to land on one turn, survive the initial counter attack in the inter-turn, then advance on the target.

[EDIT] A marine is twice as powerful on attack as a rifleman. He has the same defence strength, and he also has zone of control, which means he can take a pot-shot at a passing enemy unit.

Correct. Which is why Elite* units are particularly good choices for army duty.

erm... Elite* units can continue producing leaders, although I forget if it is at a faster or slower rate. I'm fairly certain it's faster because I once got 2 leaders in like 3-4 turns from one Elite* :king:

EDIT: If you are talking about Elite* units IN an army then yes i think you are right

An elite* unit can't produce a leader as far as I know. You *can* produce a leader from the same unit twice if you upgrade an elite*, which returns it to veteran status, then promote it to elite, then win again.

I've had units I've upgraded over and over produce great leaders in both vanilla and Complete, so it is possible. Sometimes, they seem to be better at it than another elite unit that's in position to create a leader. The only bummer I've had with leaders is when is created during a defensive phase and they get hosed after being attacked over and over. It's a shame they can't retreat...
