Armored Cavalry - the point?

I'm thinking it might be appropriate for Chariots and War Chariots to be unable to enter forests/ancient forests/jungles or hills (at least if there isn't a road there) while knights have all their abilities but not the mobility restrictions.

That's a really good concept! That might be too restrictive though...how about giving horse archers and knights no terrain movement penalties instead, like the mongolian keshik?

Knights are heavily armored, though it'd set them apart, it wouldn't make much too much sense. With Horse Archers it's alright, though I feel it's still unnecessary.

I like Blackmantle's idea.

At the very least they should have a base 11:strength: to set them apart from WC's more.
Horse affinity sounds interesting, but its not the same as mana affinity. You cant really choose to build a horse stable instead of cow or sheep stable.

Maybe Knights should get -1 movement in exchange for +2 strength or something like that.

That's why it might work, and it's what would prevent it from being exploitable. You can choose to turn any or all of your mana nodes into a single type of mana. If you want more horses, you have to go get them!

By the way, I love your avatar! That album doesn't get nearly enough air-time, IMO.

I know there is a general hatred of "reuse of a mechanic"... but why not allow Mounted units to select their style of mount? (yes, essentially the Naval Crew mechanic). Grab a Shetfield for lower move and higher strength, grab a Painted and gain more movement and withdrawal at the cost of your immunity to first strikes (if I am remembering correct and horses have that normally). Hippus get a unique mount choice which could possibly have the just now discussed Horse Affinity, or some other appropriate bonus (ideally it would be better, but in a very different manner so as to not be the choice all the time, so Horse Affinity wouldn't be a good option for that. Maybe since they LIVE on their horses, they are so comfortable maneuvering them that they are allowed to gain defensive bonuses when using their unique mount, no penalty, but no other bonus to stats... Hrm, I like that one so far).

xien has the some of the best ideas. That would be way awsome!

People often listed to Xienwolf better than they listen to me when I propose the exact same thing weeks or months earlier.

Of course, in the version I proposed the horse resource would have been split into several different types of horses (with each "mount" promotion requiring a different resource), revealed at different techs, and the Hippus Palace would be the only source of a horse breed (perhaps the "Mearas") that is generally better than all the others. (Some other horses could have strengths in certain niches that are superior to them, but all would also have weaknesses that only the Mearas lack.)

Not all the mounts would have to be horses, as Nightmares, Camels, and Deer (for the elves) and Pigs (for the dwarves) could be used too.

@Magister Ive liked almost all of the ideas you have proposed, you are just too busy with school to work on it.

How about Rams for dwarves... Rams seem a little more warlike rather than a waddling pig (cows may work too as a bull). Giant serpants for lizards, flying drakes for amurites, griffons for bannor.

Now that we are also discussing archers, how about putting gunpowder at the end of the archery line?

I think applying the ship mechanic to mounts would only make things more interesting, and make knights and WCs a little more special.

The Hippus do get a free horselord promotion, but for a civ that spends more time on a horse than off I would expect them to have more bonuses to mounted units. The ideas in this thread sound very good.

@Schmoe: Now I can die happy knowing that there is someone out there who agrees with me.

Count one more vote for switchable mounts!

And as a side note: I really don't like chariots. Historically they're ineffective and they look stupid (purely subjective, of course). Having said that I have 2 problems with the current units:

The regular units: without copper the Horse Archers are clearly superior to normal Chariots. with iron they're pretty much balanced (6 vs 7/5 - your choice). But if you have mithril your only feasible choice for cavalry are the Chariots. Couldn't Horsemen and Chariots just be swapped? Leave the ancient tech in the early game, when they did not yet know how to ride properly? Also the Horse Archers could use flame arrows.

The top units: well.. having 4 "War Chariots" as elite units is not too bad, I could live with that. Though I prefer knights in shiny armor ;)

I think knights should have a 11 strength straight across the board (atk and def), would make them a bit more worth it.

I'm still thinking that it would be good to have Chariots/War Chariots in the game and possibly even stronger than the other mounted units, but make them unable to enter rougher terrain.

This sounds like very fun. I've always liked fantasy mounts such as nightmares, rhinos, Camels, deer, lions, wolfs, polar-bears, pegasus, unicorn etc. etc. as mounts. And each breed giving a small unique bonus would feel very good :)
