Arrogant Demand then War

Is there any reason that you can't demand something and attack on the same turn even if they give in? It seems there is no downside to accepting the tribute and then killing them anyway. If your relations are good enough, and you are strong enough, you might even be able to get a tech which wouldn't be possible when the war is over and your enemy is no more.

On the other hand, has anyone had the AI do that to them?

You know, I just tried this for the first time just a minute ago. It seemed to work without any problem.

A related question, if you extort a civ, will its friends be angry with you for it?

It is a good thing to do if you are going to destroy the target civ, you may as well extort their gold or a tech before the war. But if you intend to vassalise them it might not be worth the extra -1 modifier as they are less likely to co-operate later trading techs with you.

I feel a little guilty doing that. I need to start demanding at regular intervals when #1 instead of right before going to war.

Historically, it's not unrealistic to do (France and Britain acceded to Hitler's demands regarding Austria, Czechoslovakia, rearmament, etc and he still invaded Poland, their 'vassel'. On the other hand, "Hitler did it too" . . .) On the other hand, it is an inherent advantage for human players against AI.

I make arrogant demands as a way of inducing them to declare war on me. Saves on racking up those "you declared war on our friend" modifiers. And who knows, they might actually accede.

I absolutely always demand tribute before going to war. With the reduced upgrade cost the AI have, only an idiot would allow them to keep their money on the turn you attack.

I think they should change it so this isn't possible. I think a tribute should cause a 10 turn non-agression pact to be signed, and if you break the pact, then you get heavy modifiers with all other civs for being untrustworthy.

I like this idea. Right now, it feels like an exploit (not that I don't do it ;))...
