It seems I can not build Artillery, though the Civilpoedia says that you can. What do you need to produce Artillery ?
Same question for Warships (though I don't know the english name for it, I have the French edition ; basically it is the strongest type of war ships, the type used by the empire against you during the war of independance)

You need tools + guns to build some war ships (frigates, war galions) and artillery (canons)

By the way, I play with the french game too ;)

And you need an Armory in the colony before doing them. For the warships you need a Shipyard but it can be only build after the Drydock.

Unfortunately you can't build Artillery or Man-o-War. The Civilopedia describes Artillery as a 'Unique unit for the English, French, Spanish and Dutch Empires'. Same for Man-o-War, and it adds 'Their design is a closely guarded secret, meaning no colony will ever be able to build one'.

Thanks dalgo.
I had misread the "unique unit" thing and thought it could be build by colonies.
So the challenge is to beat the king with weaker guns and ships...

I sort of wish there was a little more "free time" in colonization to allow for a simplified tech tree. Having just soldiers over a time period of a few hundred years is so simplistic. No UU or UB though, that wouldn't be a good idea. But what about a 3 types of infantry, 2 types of mounted units, and 2 kinds of siege? Then again that might be leaning too much back towards civ... I'm such a shameless whore when it comes to Sid Meier's baby...

Instead of a tech tree how about a barracks building in which you can assign troops to learn skills as in the school? Spend x amount of time in the barracks and you gain xp for promotions...

there already is a military school...its called "go blow up some natives and other colonists" :)

Understandable mistake. I find the Civilopedia very misleading in this regard. Although it says "unique unit" it also says "Requires Armory or Magazine or Arsenal" - the inference being you can build artillery if you have one of these buildings. In fact, I'm not sure why the prerequisites are given at all if the unit can't be built by anyone except the "mother counries".

Ya could make the "new" units you wanted, then have a F-father give the units when they appear then train more from there, kinda like the french did for the US-colonists by teaching them to walk in a straight line. If you got real creative with it, I'd up the home-countries forces too, otherwise it'd just to easy, and while I am sure there is a way I don't know how to add units into the REF.

if it wasn't such a niche market, there is a book to be written called "zen and the art of conquoring the world"...cuz I think there are a lot of us old war horses who started with chargeing Shaka with our chariot hoping to wipe him out early enough we would have all of africa to expand into...and knowing the wonderous pain in the patoot of wondering why the 2nd ship you had just sent to Europe suddenly brought back all the new settlers you had sent on your first ship the turn before and the joys of setting up way points so the ships never collided, thus trading cargos, again

I'm sure someone will correct me, but Colonization(orignal) was the last real game Sid had hands on, research-hands on, then he became a big shot and went into consulting...to sound like the gripey old man that I am, games were better when they were organic and the designers were also the researchers.

not like the games today, back in my day we had to carry our pong in the snow uphill, ..both ways!

I fully concur with lovepuppy's feelings here.
This new "new" (better say revamped) Col for one does'nt taste as spicy as the ole one was ... and I'll keep playing with the 90's colored little squares as long as I can.
