Ask a Part-Time Pettyologist -- THE SECOND TRY

Just curious, Aimee - and this isn't really about Petty himself, but I was wondering how you got so interested in him and his music? When / how did you discover him?

I'm just asking out of interest in passion about music, seriously. I'm not going to tell you that Petty sucks, or that you have an unhealthy obsession or anything of the sort. I've seen a certain band in concert 50+ times and spent over a decade of my life and thousands of dollars on them, so I know how it goes. :)

If you'd prefer to leave this off the thread and respond via PM, go for it.

Through the Traveling Wilburys, in 2007. The first albums I got were Full Moon Fever and Greatest Hits. Later on I got those LPs at a yard sale (I remember buying all five of them for $7) and then I got Anthology through the Years for Christmas (this was before the only specialty record store in town closed down. Now the only place to get it is either Wal-Mart or Zellers. But I never even bother looking at Zellers because all they have are compilation CDs. And last I checked Wal-Mart only had Greatest Hits.)

Theres no such site. If there was, Id know.

Maybe.

No, I haven't read many of your posts. Only a dozen or two. From there I concluded, reasonably, that you are alarmingly obsessed with Petty, 90% of your posts being about him, and that you spam this forum with "1000 reasons why Petty is better than everything". My statement about making no posts apart from Petty was hyperbole (obviously) based on fact.
Moderator Action: In a thread about Tom Petty, what would you expect people to discuss? Keep it civil, please.

90%? FWIW, I really only post about him in A&E these days. So if you stuck to A&E obviously you're gonna get that impression.

EDIT: Either way, this thread, does not titled "CRITICIZE A PETTYOLOGIST."

Criticizing? No, no, I am only trying to help :). How much time do you spend on Petty every day? How many hours have you spent in all? Realize that if you spent those hours instead on an education or something productive then 10 years later you'll be much better off.

10 years later, you'll thank me. ;)

With all due respect, aimee has created at least 2 threads about Tom Petty and hijacked another thread of mine in the short time I have been on CivFanatics. So you understand that I am slightly concerned (and annoyed) about aimee's obsession with Petty.

Thats odd... Because I dont recall posting any Petty in any thread you started.

Also, I am in college. But Im slow.

EDIT: I did post in greatest rock band. But I do not think that was hijacking that thread.

He's referring probably to the Greatest Rock Band thread, which, tbf, you did threadjack.

Is nobody gonna ask me Petty questions. Come on. Its the Ask a Pettyologist. Not Criticize or Give Unsolicited Advice to one. Sigh. If this continues maybe the thread gets closed.

Frankly the reason is because no one cares. Tom Petty is not anything spectacular. He's not a god, not a legend. His music is mediocre, and people frankly have better things to do than to ask inane questions that can be much more easily answered with a simple google or wikipedia search.

Not all of them. And some of them ain't specialty questions either. And Ive seen some pretty glaring mistakes even in magazine articles.

This works under the assumption that people will care enough about TPATH to ask these "specialty questions" (hint: they won't). Face it, Tom Petty was not "interesting enough of a character" (as in he didn't drive cars into pools, like Led Zeppelin did), nor did he have enough of a weird cult following to warrant interest in specialization (like the Grateful Dead, whose sheer content of concert output makes studying/archiving the Grateful Dead an actually legit profession).

In summation, Tom Petty is not interesting enough of a band to warrant a thread like this. Go become a Beatles or Eric Clapton expert, then come back here, and maybe we'll talk.

I think theres enough of those already. This is my specialty. Now either ask Petty questions or don't criticize those.

By the way, for driving cars into pools, any silly person can pull a stunt like that. But if you want some silly stunts:

Fair enough. I'm just saying, don't complain when people don't ask you questions.

I was complaining about the thread being used to complain about me. I actually just bumped it to post images of that newsletter (to ask if it was probably photocopied or not).
