Ask Me Anything

I just checked in game and there did not appear to be any suggestion of which buildings provided bonuses to which of the resources in More Luxuries v 155 and I have been unable anywhere else to see which buildings provide bonuses for any of the new luxuries.

Could be my installation, but I did a manual install of version 7-7.

I would definitely suggest using the automatic installer instead, way less of a chance to mess up.

I had nothing but issues with the auto installer, which is why I started doing manual installs

Thank you for the wonderful thread Funak! I have a couple of questions...

1. How do you use your first missionaries? I feel that getting my religion in the strongest nearby civ's capital is a good idea, but so is spreading it around my own empire quickly, or spreading it to city states that want it.

2. I know it's an obvious question, but do you build a scout first in most games? I am starting to think it's not worth it compared to rushing monument/shrine, since one can scout sufficiently well with just the warrior, at least for city locations.

It does depend on the first follower-belief I pick. Is it something that I can make work of in my own cities (any non-building) I generally do spread it to my own cities first. If I go for a religious building as a first choice I tend to spread the religion to my neighbors first, hoping that they will keep spreading it.
It also depends on if I settled a city after founding the religion, since that city isn't going to have access to my pantheon I tend to prioritize spreading to it.

This really depends on map, civ, setup and so on. On a pangaea or an oval map (the types I usually play) going for a(or even two) scout(s) first is usually worth it, early discovery bonus for meeting city-states and ancient ruins tend to make up for any lost time working on the monument/shrine (either by hammers from ruins or by investing from gold gained).
On island-based maps going scout first probably isn't the best idea (unless you're polynesia or maybe shoshone).
Some civs tend to need more or less scouts, for example playing as shoshone I usually build 3 pathfinders right off the bat, hoping to earn the investment back with superior ancient ruins (also getting the extra pathfinders up is easy since you can go for hammer-ruins). Playing as iroquois I usually feel the need to build an extra scout mostly because of the reduced vision in forest/jungle. Playing as America I'm fairly split, on one hand you really don't need more than 1 scout because of its absurd sightrange, but on the other hand investing in more scouts means making better use out of the extra sight.
If I'm playing as Aztecs I tend to neglect scouts in favor of Jaguars.

Really nice thread, thank you very much!

How do you use inquisitors?
Is it a required unit or a nice to have tool?
What hints can you tell about using them?

There are 3 main uses for Inquisitors, first is to convert cities that you conquer (especially in the mid to late-game, and especially holy-cities).

Second use is to stop a crazy neighbor from converting your cities with missionaries. Buy an inquisitor for every city and keep it stationed in the city and you're immune to hostile missionaries.

The third use for Inquisitors is to reduce unhappiness from Religious division. This is usually only an issue if you've founded your own religion and failed catastrophically to spread it. If your neighbors exert higher pressure on your cities than your cities do to each other you're slowly going to build up a big religious minority in your cities, these minorities cause great unhappiness and you can use inquisitors to remove them.

In the first and third case, do you expend the inquisitor?

Funak, do you know how religious conversion works in VP?

Basically how does competing religious pressure act to convert citizens. Do pantheons provide a form of internal pressure?

A good guide, but doesn't really go into the numbers, just the strategy.

Pretty sure I said some pages ago that numbers are hard to come by and useless in most scenarios anyways. So sorry I'm not really that helpful when it comes to numbers, and I'm not really that into writing about them because they could change at any time anyways.

Another interesting fact : If you eradicate a civ from the game, you get all his votes from his embassies. Good to know when you are looking for dominate the UN.
Has anyone investigated this to make sure whether the embassy/vote-stealing condition is
  • be in control of the Civ's original Capital,
  • conquer the Civ's last City, or
  • be in control of the Civ's original Capital at the time it loses its last City?

Diplomatic National Wonders like Printing Press increase production while building diplomatic units in every your city? Or just in the city you built it?

I'm fairly certain it's just in the city you built it in, but I actually don't remember ever testing it.

Do you know which UUs get to keep their unique promotions. I am playing with Egypt right now and I was certain that War Chariots would lose their promotions so I didn't bother getting that many horses but when I promoted one. Hot dog! They keep those promotions. Had to settle a not that great city to get few horses more. Now I am just waiting a good time to go war with Napoleon to get my 8 heavy skirsmishers to get me some of that sweet sweet production.
