Aspyr Announces Civ3 Complete & Civ4

Still? Wasn't that the case also back in June, 2001? ;)
Yes, but I'm actually almost done. I have more than 100 pages of my dissertation written, and expect to graduate in December 07 - or even May 07 if all goes well!

Or worse will it be like the original Civ 3 whose box art claimed that it had a functional scenario editor, but didn't? I am loath to spend money on another iffy product. Aspyr is a bit short on details.

No editor in the box, no promise of one in the future (although I won't say it'll never happen either). We're busily hand-scribbling "Almost" on each box cover, right between the words Civilization III and Complete to help clarify. ;)

Dude, streamline the flow: get a stamp that says "semi-" and think: World Builder!

If we get an editor for Civ3, I'll... I have no idea. I'll... Give you a free tour of NBC studios (if you're ever in Burbank), but... we get that World Builder for C-IV...? You get a guaranteed nomination as Patron Saint of Mac Gamers.

It's my understanding - and someone *please* correct me if I'm wrong - that the Civ4 editor is integrated into the game itself. It sure seemed that way to me in my extremely limited futzing with Civ4 on my PC last week.

Yes, please. Anybody know? I'm only going on hearsay (all my windows experience is at work... and no playing there).

If you had offered a stay at George Lucas's ranch/studio, you'd had him.

I'm a little fuzzy about this. I've read mention about an editor and a world builder. Are they the same item? From my perception, it seems that the world builder is a separate app, but... .

I have civ4- but haven't really messed around with the editing yet. The world-builder should be integrated- you can launch it at any time within a game I think (could be wrong about that). It lets you give yourself techs, place units or resources, etc. Haven't messed around with the 'custom game' option, so I'm not sure what's there in terms of a scenario editor. I would bet though that it will be included in the mac port.

... my first post at CivFanatics, and it seems the "quick reply" doesn't work the same as it does over at 'Poly. That or my browser (Netscape 7.02) is screwed up. Oh, well. Here's the first post in its entirety (hopefully):

OK, dojoboy. You've done it. You've forced me to expand the list of forums I belong to — with CivFanatics being but the latest one. Jeez. Now I suppose I should head over over to Inside Mac Games ... tomorrow, maybe.

*cough* OK, to the subject at hand:

Before I can fully enjoy Civ III *or* Civ IV, I need to invest in a new iMac. A 333mhz model from May 1999 with 160 megs of RAM just doesn't cut it anymore in today's world. :D

That said, I'll likely pick up C3C/Mac at some point in time. After all, I'm sure there are modders out there who have created Earth maps and whatnot with all the proper starting locations for various Civs that can be used by the Mac community.

Civ IV is also a guaranteed purchase — provided it ships with the scenario and World Builder functions included. A Civ game isn't a Civ game unless one has the "God" powers of being able to shape worlds, modify Civs and whatnot. Everything I've heard, though, seems to indicate that Aspyr isn't going to pull a Macsoft* on us. So it's just a matter of waiting and being patient. Besides, it gives me a slight, morbid pleasure to see the PC folks struggling with their somewhat-buggy Civ IV games. Better they're the guinea pigs than us, IMO.

*There was a time when saying "to pull a Macsoft" would never have crossed my mind. They did a *great* job with Civ II, IMO. But, boy, did they crash and burn with Civ III. That is something I will *never* forget. Forgive, perhaps, but not forget.

Welcome to the CFC Mac community Gatekeeper! :) Woo-hoo! Everyone, let me introduce you to Gatekeeper, a fellow Apolyton mate of mine. I'm sure you'll find GK a valuable member of the community. :goodjob: In fact, he's just what our community has been needing. Every community needs a Gatekeeper! :insert rim shot:

Putting off IMG for later, eh. Well, it could be too much at one time. ;)

With C3C coming out for the Mac, thanks to Aspyr of course - and those good folks who will purchase it, :) it'd be fun to have a "commemorative" save file for everyone to play. But, with the inclusion of Mac Civ3 in the GOTM, CFC has frowned on such events here in the Mac forum.

But, maybe AlanH could use his influence to add a litle Apple flavoring to an upcoming COTM, or place some Easter Eggs - maybe have a city name in the file for Aspyr or New Oliver City. :D

Hello Gatekeeper and welcome! :wavey: How does a Mac user survive at Apolyton? I've never been able to find the Mac ghetto over there, and assumed it didn't exist.

Well, I'll see what I can do ;) Of course, with no editor, I'm completely in the hands of the game designers. Should it be the January game, or February? I'm thinking that might be tempting fate, and we still don't know the lag for non-US Mac players to get Complete.

Speaking of C/GOTM, it would be nice to standardise on two Civ3 versions instead of three, specially as vanilla requires mods to make it behave like PtW, and we have to turn off some PtW features to maintain parity. Will everyone with a Mac migrate to Complete when it is released? Or will there still be a Mac market for GOTM games released in vanilla?

I will get Complete, but I must add that there are others (tR1cKy comes to mind) who only have Vanilla on their PCs.

I know we would need to ask the question in the wider community, but there's no point in doing so if Mac players are going to stick with vanilla come hell or high water. I thought I'd take advantage of it being a live topic here to ask the question.

The last time it was raised, there were very few PC players who actually prefer vanilla. Seems like it's mostly inertia that keeps them playing it. Tr1cKy's case is rather special if I recall correctly. He can and does play PtW in SGs, but prefers not to, not for game-related reasons :hmm:

assuming that the (unsupported) PTW-app is playable i will abandon the vanilla version. i've played PTW on PC and it does has have a few nice features which the vanilla version lacks. if the PTW-app doesn't work then wheather or not i will keep playing the vanilla version will depend on how much i like C3C. since i've never played C3C, i can't tell how much i'll like it.

There will not be a separate executable for PtW, or vanilla Civ3; however, the PtW GOTM start file is playable with the soon to be released C3Com for the Mac. I'm assuming the vanilla Civ3 start file will be run as well.

Really?

Umm! No. A GOTM vanilla start file expects to find a whole different set of races and units, as assembled by Cracker to simulate the extra PtW races and their UUs. There is no existing mod installer that would set up PtW or C3C or Aspyr Almost-Complete to run the GOTM vanilla start file. If you want to play the GOTM using the new Aspyr software then you'll need the PtW start file, and Complete will have to run in PtW mode.
