Assyria discussion

a free tech? Not just a science boost? That sound very strong. For one you can 'catch-up' on techs if you want to, but I'd prefer teching for siege towers and simultaneously taking out 1-3 city states at first. That should give you an edge on military techs and the colosseums to keep your holdings. It allows you to snipe for a certain tech you want. Seems like Assyria willl be the conqueror civ and their only problem would be to keep going. If the royal library isn't very good by itself, chances are I will be ignoring it for some time.

And it seems Assyria will take over Rome's spot as the beginner civ for conquest (as Egypt is the one for Builders).

Holy crap! I think I'm in love with their UA.

It serves the Assyrians no good to pursue smaller civs. Assyria is going hunting for runaways.

Doesn't sound like CSs would give you a tech; obviously, being a translation, the language may not be exactly correct, but it sounds as if you get a free tech from the technologies researched by that city's owner. So I would think that would exclude CSs, and you won't get a free tech if you capture a city that belongs to someone behind yourself on the tech tree.

Assyria will want to go to war with runaways/science civilizations primarily.

And even that itself is difficult seeing as more or less the runaways are more dominant over you either way with better units.

Oh, that is a sweet, sweet UA!

So... beeline Mathematics, get siege towers, and rush the most technologically advanced civ you can find. Steal Writing from one of their cities and use the cash from your conquests to rush buy royal libraries. Then... um, well I suppose the next part of the strategy depends on us finding out what the libraries do

Assyria sounds like the bane of Babylon.

Ashurbanipal: Great walls, Nebby!

Nebuchadnezzar II: *throws chalice* Thanks Ash, I tried to find the shiniest Lapis Lazuli I could, and the mosaics turned out really nice. Say, what is that rolling tower you got there?

Ashurbanipal: Don't worry about that; it certainly isn't here to breach your walls. Hey, so the reason I dropped by today was to ask if you had any nice clay tablets in your library. I like to lift them *flexes muscled arm* and my library is a bit empty right now...

Loving this UA!

Attila looked triumphantly at a map of his empire. Babylon, Korea, Rome, China...all had fallen to his single battering ram from hell. Their libraries had given the Hunnic empire powerful inventions and technologies, why, Attila had heard that the R&D department were working on refining uranium into weaponry!

Suddenly, a scout appeared before the Hunnic leader.

"President Attila! Word from the east!"

"Out with it, boy!"

"Assyria is coming. And they've brought siege towers."

All color drains from Attila's face.

Hopefully no tech from CS's (so easy to kill), and only tech from other civs if they have a tech Assyria doesent have. Just like espionage rules you might say. Then this UA is OK.

Disapointed UB isnt a unique National College. Would be a challenging and interesting balance there to get the UB early as possible while warmongering. Would also feel alot more unique.

Assyrian UA said:
Steal an enemy technology when taking a city. Can be used only once per city.

Wogh.., is that the right effect??
"Can be used only once per city." thing is not a big restriction IMO..
You can burn your conquered cities and let your enemies fill that land with new cities so you can farm that cities later..

At the very least, the UA encourages you to lay low and focus on production and the military as opposed to wasting time on the Great Library or Oxford.

So knowing the UA, here's an idea for the royal library: +15% research if you're researching a tech noone else knows. This way you get to beeline all the juicy expensive techs while picking up the more commonplace ones through conquest.

What does everyone think? I love the idea, but it might be a bit powerful when you start to pull away from the pack... maybe you'd have to tone down the basic library yield to +1 research/3 citizens for balance... also, it seems to be more suited to a UA than a UB?

I'd say the idea is crazy talk.... :)

Oh yes, seems like the UA would more function like the "steal tech" which makes it just way more balanced suddenly. But it's also a UA now that needs you to invest something to get a reward. It's okay, but I guess this will make AI Assyria a Hit or Miss civ.

Wow. Assyria have just gone straight to the top of my most-anticipated list.

Are we sure that 'can only be used once per city' isn't really 'once per Civ'? That would make it a lot more balanced.

Dear CFC,

we heard about Assyria's UA today. We would like you to know that we are moving. It's nothing personal, we just think we won't get along with Ashurbanipal.

Goodbye and have some nice future eras.

Yours,

Sejong, Nebuchadnezzar II and Hiawatha
