FYI - this appears to be a problem with some ATI graphics card drivers. However, I have some feedback that testing with ATI cards didn't show these problems.

Could anybody with this problem please post their card type and graphics driver version?

It may also be useful if people with ATI cards who don't have this problem could post their details:

Eg.
Card: XXXX
Driver Version: XXXX
Works / Doesn't work: Works fine.

Moderator Action: Ok - thanks for the info, people. I think its been useful for Firaxis.

I'll unsticky this thread now. For those of you having problems, please have a look at this thread. Its recognised that that suggested fix doesn't solve problems for Windows 2000 users, but there is a fix for them on the way.

Game "locks up" on Select Leader Screen and same with the Tutorial. Requires "hard reboot".

ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
driver: 6.13.10.6236
Sony VIAO pcg-GRV680
Pentium 4

The following ATI graphics driver will work for the Sony VIAO PCG-GRV680 laptop computer and can be found on the Sony website:

ATI Radeon Mobility 9000

Driver Date: 7/30/2003

Driver Version: 6.14.10.6382

Card: ATI Radeon 9550 AGP 256mb DDR
Driver Version: Catalyst 5.10 (also tried 5.9)
Status: Failed to initialize renderer

Same here, 2.17 Ghz Processor or so... 512 MB Ram

Card: ATI Radeon 9800 Mobility (for Dell Inspiron)
Driver: Omega 2.6.75a (Catalyst based) - also tried Omega 2.6.71
Status: "Failed to initialize renderer"
DOESN'T WORK

Other Specs: P4; 3.2mhz; 1 Gig Ram; 256 meg video ram

Card: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Driver Version: 6.14.10.6490

As I mentioned in the other thread. Those of you with the initialization error need to browse the "install" disk and find the directx folder. Run setup, and MAKE SURE YOU REBOOT. This fixed the problem for me.

If you still have the issue or lockups, I'd suggest turning anistropic filtering and full screen anti-aliasing off in your video control panel. If it works, then turn one on, re-try, then the other etc. There are a few games out there that have issues with ATI's implementation of FSAA and/or AF.

I'm using CAT 5.9 (not their latest hotfixed drivers version) and I am using the Catalyst Control Center that came with the 5.9 drivers.

Good luck, and this should remedy the majority of the issues mentioned in various threads.

I have a Radeon ATI Mobility 9000 and i got it to work. I use the Omega drivers, which are supposedly good for running games. I forget the website where i obtained them, (i downloaded em a while ago), maybe someone else here knows the website?

Could you post your computer specs? This is the second post I've seen mentioning the Omega drivers and a working game. Did your game install and start right up with no problems? (Amazed you're here posting!)

You might want to try uninstalling your drivers completely and reinstalling the newest ones by using the uninstall utility that ATI provides on its website(cat-uninstall.exe). This Utility removes the whole driver and anything put into the registry that might be left behind and cause conflict with a regular install. It solved me problems on other games I have. Its located under the utilities section under download on the website.

Is it my 32 meg memory? or the drivers? I can load etc., but get black where the landscape should be. And balnk leader faces. The glabal view does give me landscape, however. Any help would be much appreciated.

It seems that Walmart of all places has a couple of video cards listed. A PNY GeForce FX 5500 w/ 128MB PCI and an ATI Radeon 9200SE PCI 128 MB.

Any comments on these cards?
