So Attila is not in my game and maybe I am missing something since I am still really new to the game/genre.. I am playing on Noble, maybe I should tone it down a bit to maybe warlord or Chieftain?

Anyways.. Attila is not a civ in my game yet he appeared right on my border between Shaka and myself, which I thought couldnt happen if units were near it and/or FoW was not there.. (meaning its entirely visible)

How is this possible? Why is he here if he isn't a civ in the game? Did I miss something? Pretty much lost the game because I didn't have anything but archers and some warriors..Turn 102

Frustrated.. but not giving up.. I guess I'll start over and try again.

If this is the wrong forum, please point me in the right direction :D

Edit: 37 turns later, Shaka declares on me and I'm dead.. well crap..

Screenshots or save attached please. By the way, as far as I know, Atilla is not in this game!

Probably barb uprising event?? If you are being defeated by Shaka that early on a game you are doing something wrong. Diplomacy or 3-4 defensive units should easily stop him. That or more expansion early on!

That would be my guess. Unless the OP has a mod that adds Attila and the Huns as a leader/civ, they are not in civ4. My thinking is its the barb event.

Forum is right, people will help you here, as you see. Barbs can spawn below unfogged tiles, so they can appear everywhere where the "Fog of war" is. The easiest way to deal with them, is to get rid of the Fog, by putting so called "Fogbusters" on the map. Every unit has a square of 5x5 tiles, in which no barbs can spawn. Build a few units (Warriors usually are enough) , and distribute them over the unfogged areas around your borders, then you should be safe.

I didn't save the game before I got attacked, but I believe yoj are correct that it was the barbarian uprising event. It said Attila the Hun is leading a bunch of horse archers and since I was the weakest civ they showed up right on my boarders.

To be honest, they could have spawned in the fog and I just didnt see them in time. I repelled the hun attack and rebuilt my cities just in timd for shaka to do me in.

Still new to the game so im sure that there is a lot of stuff that i did not get right. I upgraded my install from 3.03 to 3.19 and installed bug and bat mods and I did a smaller map with only 4 total civs since im still learning.

Doing very well with the mongols this go around and when alex declared on me, I pit him in his place, very back and forth but starting to gain on him.

all in all though, im loving this game. 😁

Maybe worth posting a game on the forum if you need help. Never remove the fun element from your games. A lot of players on here turn events off as barb uprising events can kill a game. Especially if they wipe out an AI. Once they capture a city they never stay to defend it. The uprising will always head directly to a city. So easy to recapture the cities.

Yeah for sure.. I have started saving my games on turn 0 and maybe I should turn on autosave? I dunno.. I get so focused in the game that I forget to save and its been hundreds of years so I saved it lol.

Oh yeah in my mongol game? I gave peace to Alex and started expanding and building units again.. guess what? Alex became friends with Monty, so to my immediate east is Monty and to my immediate south borders was Alex.. they declared on me same turn.. I retired the game at that point.. I didnt have enough units from Fighting with Alex to do anything on two fronts..

I think I'm going to turn down the difficulty to Warlord and see what happens.

@TheCox----- If you are new to the genre / game, remember that noble difficulty was meant for players experienced in the civilization franchise. Playing on warlord might be good for you. A good habit at the start of every game would be to not only save immediately, but name the save "start". Turn on the resource bubbles to get an idea of what resources are around your start. It would also benefit you to play a custom game and disabling the random events. Getting used to the basic principles and game play before having to deal with possible game ruining random events. Many players here on the forum will admit that they have many games spoiled by the random events, and choose to play without them. Myself included. As a new player to civilization there are two things you can do to learn the game. One would be to post a save, and let other players play along with you, getting advice from them on what they would do and why. Seraiel and Pangaea specifically take new players under their wing and help guide them. The second thing for a new player would be to search for Sulla's let's play videos on YouTube. Sulla plays slow, and explains what he's doing in game. I recommend Sulla's Dutch game. Very informative. Anyways, welcome to the game, and forum.

Oh yes.. I work from home.. so I'm reading Sisiutil's noob guide, I have been going through the war academy and just reading everything I can.. I can't believe how addicted to this game I am.

I played a game on settler and just decimated, well because its settler.. I want a challenge to where the AI will attack me if they want to, but not something that is a cakewalk either.. I will try your advice on Warlord and see where that takes me.

I definitely did a custom game with no random events so this wouldn't happen again :D I will watch Sulla's games on youtube and see what more info I can find out.

I did start doing a save at the beginning of the game, maybe start a thread later on, once I get the better basics down.

If you turn on autosave, the game will automatically save the start before your first move and then (unless you muck about with the .ini file) every four turns after that, keeping the initial save and the last four autosaves.

I'd recommend you turn on the autosave.

Good to know! I will definitely do that and tone it down to maybe Warlord and try it again.

Thanks for the advice everyone =)
