The penalty is harsher. You will still be content when you're at -1, but -2 now will give you the same non-food yield penalty -3 gave you before (10%) and -4 will give you a harsher penalty (20%). Basically, now you've more room to fix your amenities issue before it affects you, but if you don't fix it, it will kick harder than before sooner.
 
Added bias for starting in the center of a continent the player does not share with other majors.

What does that mean? I'm reading this as meaning that we will always start in the center of a continent that won't spawn any other Civ, is that correct?
 
Ha, i just hopped onto my PC real quick so I could load the update so it's ready when i'm done with work.

It installed in 7 seconds. Love fiber optic internet.

I read it as: If you are alone on a continent, you have a bias towards the center. Remember, there are other biases a civ may have that override this (coastal, lake, mountains, etc.).
 
This patch is definitely a big step in the direction I would like to see these 'off-month' patches going - but I would honestly like to see them go even more overboard in changes. I'm disappointed there's no changes to Audience Chamber and National History Museum when they are looking over the government plaza already.

Hoping they will take a look at the policy card slot distributions soon in the tier 2 and 3 governments, as well as the era score system to make Dark Ages a bit more relevant. Not to mention filling in the most serious unit gaps (trebuchet, longswordsmen, medieval ships, etc).

Intrigued by the AI changes, last patch was very substantial in AI improvements.

Edit: I also don't quite understand why they didn't buff the rewards from having positive amenities - it seems a lot more difficult to reach the thresholds now.

I am afraid that they actually may try to do so and the next patch notes will be like this:
"Various changes to the game".

I've had games where I haven't met a civ for at least a little span into the game. Intriguingly, Dido's turn 1 boost to writing actually suddenly becomes way more valuable now, since they'll know if it's close or far. If you see that you can go mining-writing straight away, adds a new challenge, vs maybe a game where it ends up stuck in a mess needing 4 or 5 pre-reqs total.

They wrote "Various AI improvements" in the previous patch too and I didn't think much of it at first. But then I noticed some actual AI improvements so there's more meat there than they're showing. (there's in fact a whole thread called "Noticeable AI improvements" that discusses that.) Now as to why are they not being more transparent re: AI improvements I can only speculate; maybe they found when they disclose too much info then us fanatics tend to pile up too many negative comments etc and they don't want that. There also seems to be more an emphasis on improving AI as someone pointed out that during yesterday's develop stream they said "our lead AI is working on that" indicating there's actually more than 1 person working on the AI finally. I'm optimistic
 
They do need to stop this warning coming up when your city is at Content. It is going to be (1) annoying, and (2) gradually lose it's meaning. The warning should only come up as you get closer to actual revolt!

Looks really good.

- The hidden tech tree looks like an interesting mode but needs couple plays to know how it feels

- Changes to amenities looks great maybe my favorite part of the update!

- Changes to a.i. choosing goverments sounds promising, they usually go Fascism so I wonder if this changes it

- "Various a.i. improvements" worked well last time so happy to see it in action!

- Natural wonder chooser is not for me, as I like to keep them all in and all random, but I understand some players like it

I'm loving it so far. Adds a bit of trepidation as you stare into the fog wondering lol.
