So the academic research in the UK goes.

They are nearly a year behind their peers in the same academic year (in the UK).

I don't think it did me much harm though - and I share my birthday with other notable underachievers Tank Girl and Barack Obama.

I DID suck at sport though.

Is it possible its because the other peers tend to be a few months older because of the age cut-off? Or does it work different in the UK?

I entered elementary school on my 5th birthday (September 3).

I was actually an August baby who was held back from entering school so I was older then most of my peers.

I underachieved and sucked at sports, got bad grades but still ended up a sweet ass job.

Cut off is September, so August kids are on average 6 months younger.

There's a woman who wants to be able to wait another year before her kid enters school, here in the UK.

August birthday here, sharing with Bill Clinton...

Given that kids don't start mid school year (or didn't for me and my kids), the only disadvantage is that August kids are less streetwise.

August birthday (that I think I share with Perf).
Hasn't really affected me.

I have a late August birthday - I was pretty much the shortest and youngest throughout my entire school career, with only a couple of brief exceptions!

Well, I dunno for me it might have been important, I was extremely short (clinically significantly so) during the age I would have gone to kindergarten otherwise.

do i get superpowers for being the diametrical opposite of an august baby?

... or at least a cape?

Of course they are at a disadvantage -- they're British.

September, I deliberately bullied the August born kids as they were weaker then me.

I still think that a school system designed to start in September and end in May is completely weird.
Do any other countries have a Jan - Nov school year?

Huh, I just discovered that Singaporean schools are the only schools that start the day after New Year's Day and stretches to Mid November.

I think it was to do with children who lived on farms. But I dont know why they not changed it.

Probably because it would take too much effort, since most universities in the world operate on a Sept - May schedule. Changing admission datelines and all that would cause a huge problem as compared to just going along with the system.

I still think that having everyone born in 2005 go into the same grade is far easier than having half of 2004 students and half of 2005 students or half of 2005 and half of 2006 students.

Late August birth, parents chose to enroll me early rather than wait a year. I'm not really sure I suffered much for it.

Well I sucked at kick ball, but no one ever taught me how to kick the damn thing. I never followed through. Kickball was always embarrassing for me. I hated PE.
