Augusto Pinochet Has Died

Alright, you have me stumped here. Did you learn enough about him in four minutes or are you just saying you learned about him post-death?

Hey! I read up on real fast! :crazyeye:

The OP provied a link.

We wouldn't have won WW2 without Stalin. But that was an aberration; for most of his career, he was very much an enemy.

Pinochet was pro-American for virtually his entire career. I don't think you can compare the two.

I certainly can compare their evil.

And I can certainly see the dishonour of the USA, who dealt with either of them.

But we all know the Americans like to preach morals, while making back alley deal with the scum of the world.

:)

Nope only the hipocritical politicians. Us educated americans are much better.

Yeah, but wiki is not the end all, be all of knowledge. You should research the cold war, Allende, communism (real world examples, not that silly theory tripe), authoritarian regimes, and so forth. Then decide how you feel about him.

Oh, believe me, if I had been President at the end of WWII, I probably would have taken Patton's advice, re-armed the surrendered German troops and kept marching east.

Agree 100%.
That is the fighting spirit! :goodjob:

Although, we would have to be careful about timing, to avoid the winter!

.

I already know much about the other topics. ;)

And this wikipedia article sounds reputable. I can usually tell when someone edits it.

Guess we were lucky..

Heh, yeah I guess you all had already gotten your fill of the eastern front.

I am pretty sure with the Allies and ex-Reich forces combined, there would be quite a few German soldiers up for a 'round two' with Stalin.

It would be one heck of a battle! Imagine what the world would be like today...

...

What about.. empty?

USSR would have ceased to exist, splitting early into it's seperate republics. Mao would probably have never defeated the Nationalists in China, The Kuril Islands were still be Japanese (probably), Germany would never have been divided and probably wouldn't even have been split into administrative zones either, Korean and Vietnam wars may never have happened....

EDIT: On the flip side, a lot of the regional animosity that the cold war kept bottled up for a time would have never been suppressed. But I wonder, would it have been better to never suppress it? Putting a lid on a steam cooker builds up a lot of pressure.

Farewell! :salute:

Well, with Chavez, Morales etc. rising to power, it's only a matter of time until the next Pinochet appears to counter-balance the situation. :(
We can only hope.

Can't say I'll miss him. I think sometimes people get so tied up in their own respective idelogies (communisim! NO! Anti-Communisim! Pro American! Anti American!), that we forget the very reason that we have these systems to begin with...to govern PEOPLE. Politics and goverment are about PEOPLE.

When somebody uses that office to kill thousands, and bring about suffering like Pinochet did, it doesnt matter if he was a commie, nazi, democrat, whatever. We shouldn't appluad his actions, because somehow he was on "our team". He'll get his in the next round.

I find it bizarre how Americans can support Pinochet, but hate Saddam.
I guess it is a matter of what manner of indoctrination is used.

They are both the same creature at the core, US-controlled puppets.
Both were kept in power by Uncle Sam, and both killed plenty.

Very interesting.

When one is no longer able to pull the strings, it's time for a new puppet.
