Augusto Pinochet Has Died

Hitler also held the line against commies - For a while...

...

I too strongly support punishing the military dictators of South America, and revoking the Amnesty Laws. As long, of course, that the left-wing terrorists are also persecuted. Why is it that people only want to punish one side?
I guess left-wing propaganda works more deeply since it talks about "sharing" and thinks like that. For me they are just humans, side doesn't matter.

91 years old? Only the good die young. :(

Well, with Chavez, Morales etc. rising to power, it's only a matter of time until the next Pinochet appears to counter-balance the situation. :(

Its funny how western democracy seems to be the highest of values only when the people choose a leader the US likes...

Not really. If your talking about chavez then lots of people dont like him globally.

And this guy who died got in power through a coup and was a dictator.

You read history? His coup was pretty much financed and backed by the US.

Yeah well, popular distorted revisionist history says the same thing about the Shah of Iran as well.

This is what you said McManus.

Regardless of what we did in backing him. It cant be a democracy if we helped a dictator get in power.

So your statment above is irrelevent.

Well. If you help get rid of a democratically elected president, just because he favors socialism, which, btw, should be an indicator that that is what the people want, then I consider my point valid.

Well i guess but i dont see why past leaders even cared if other countries became socialist or communist. Seems silly to dwell on those things anyway.

Say what you want about Pinochet, he was a good American ally, and I don't feel we give him enough credit for that.

I think that the Americans in this thread who are giddy over his passing are being a bit ungrateful.

Would you say Stalin was a good ally too?

We wouldn't have won WW2 without Stalin. But that was an aberration; for most of his career, he was very much an enemy.

Pinochet was pro-American for virtually his entire career. I don't think you can compare the two.

So just because he was pro-american does that mean what he did to his own people doesnt matter?

Sounds like an evil bootlicker to me.

Oh, believe me, if I had been President at the end of WWII, I probably would have taken Patton's advice, re-armed the surrendered German troops and kept marching east.

Alright, you have me stumped here. Did you learn enough about him in four minutes or are you just saying you learned about him post-death?
