Augustus "Claus" Immortal Cookbook

Wow I suck.

Spoiler :
Praet rush went nowhere. Pacal is a monster, I was lucky to settle/capture barb cities to the extent I did. I have no way to salvage this I think. Should have wonderspammed...would have been more productive. Good luck to everyone else.http://img822.imageshack.us/i/turn141.jpg

Spoiler :

The Pret rush is very possible. You just left it too late. My attempt would of easily wiped out the Mayans. Trouble is I ignored the starting cities too much.

A strength 8 unit has a long life. Just make sure you start your attack before 1000bc really.

As Dhoom pointed out to me. If you have copper why wait for prets. I think at times we just see a great UU and rush for it.

Well thanks for the insight. I guess speed is key, but I thought I was pretty much on target. Sadly no. I'm still getting used to Immortal speeds. Oh well...a good learning experience.

Praetorians have a long life span. However, I have learned that if I spot Macemen, I will RUN AWAY! Macemen eat Praetorians for breakfast and it is easy to forget about this fact and get all cocky with your Praets, due to the similar-looking 8 strength.

Do not be fooled! Macemen are murder on Praets. Be sensible and RUN AWAY! Hehe

Even for the most environmentally-friendly, conservationist player, I suggest Chopping some Forests.

In real life, too much forest growth can cause a forest fire to be extremely devastating, as the fire can affect an extremely large area of land. Admittedly, humans are terrible on forests and we chop far more than we should. But, a tiny amount of chopping can be better for a forest than none at all.

As for your game, I suggest at a minimum chopping the Forests that I have surrounded with red squares. These Forests are contributing zero regrowth possibilities. By chopping them, you actually increase the overall chances of Forests regrowing in your game, thereby netting you free Hammers and, if keeping Forests for Lumbermills or Forest Preserves is your goal, will give you sufficient time to regrow most of them naturally while allowing you to use Forest Preserves to regrow the rest that don't regrow in time.

If a Forest is surrounded by horizontally and vertically adjacent squares which cannot have a Forest grow on them (including squares that already have a Forest on them--in terms of the game, you can't grow a Forest over top of another Forest), and if such a square has at least one horizontally or vertically adjacent square with a Forest in it, then such a square is ripe for the culling. You should strongly consider Choppnig such a Forest; unless Chopping one of the adjacent squares is a better choice, you should Chop that square's Forest in the early game, giving it plenty of time to regrow.

not sure if this is cheating but after i first beat the map i went back and tried again so i could make a submission. so without further adoooo...

Spoiler :

pop 1 hut got 48 gold.

tech went bw -> road -> masonry -> mysticism -> agriculture -> AH -> pottery ->currently teching writing.

I guess it could be argued that this is only because i knew the map in advance but thinking about it this really does seem like one of the better openings for augustus in this start position. the flood plains take forever to farm and ah takes a long time to tech so it makes more sense to just mine the pig first and then just start chopping workers/settlers/wonders.

the capital built worker/warrior/warrior/worker/worker/settler/worker/great wall/warrior/pyramids.

the first worker mined the pig then started chopping. 2nd worker joined in chopping. 3rd started a road towards the stone site. once that was hooked up i started chopping the great wall. wanted stonehenge but that went real early this game.

2nd stone city started with a settler, then grew on the pig once i got ah, then started another settler.

3rd city is by pacal at the wheat/crab/cow site, started boat and just whipped in monument.

pyramids just finished and now im roading south hoping I can get a spot somewhere down there. got 4 workers and im just finally pasturing the pig by the capital heh.

religious situation seems a bit rough this time. spy points on pacal.

I seem to have been brain dead last week. I not only forgot to post the save with my report, but I couldn't figure out it wasn't there when Dhoom asked about it. It is there, now.

Thanks for the Chop advice, Dhoom. I need to think more strategically about chopping. I tend to leave it until I need them for a wonder, and then clear cut the forests.

My (first ICB and subsequently lousy) submission:

Spoiler :

Lost two warriors to barbs and replaced them. Popped hunting and some gold from huts. Wasn't sure what direction to go in for techs, went BW > Ag > AH > Wheel > Pot, then masonry to hook up stone. I noticed no one else went for the NE citysite, any specific reasons? It's the best shot to hook up copper, but admittedly, at the moment I have no way to pop the borders and hook anything up until I get mysticism. :wallbash:

not necessarily the best but definitely interesting playout (i am buying into his unorthodox play:D) , stonehenge ,TOA, already played out a war!

1 pts - abigcivfan
good expansion, great wall, pyramids still a possibility

My votes:

3 points - ABigCivFan
Impressive economy and we can get Pyramids soon.

2 points - Dhoomstriker
5 cities and lots of possibilites.

1 points - Obsolete
Unorthodox play, but better than the other saves I think.

3 points-obsolete.love the start and the ammount of early wonders.

2 points-dhoomstriker.5 citys and a few turns off the GW(even if its lost failure gold could be good)

1 point-Abigcivfan.GW,library built, settler and pyramids on the way.

(close between Vranasm and Abigcivfan I thought as vranasm is nearer to completing the mids.

Yep. I haven't had the chance to look at the saves enough to vote, but will be able to play forward next week from whichever save wins.

Let's give this one more try...

Round II

Since he had the most votes out of three voters, the round's winner is

Dhoomstriker

If you aren't happy with my decision, well you had plenty of time to vote so that's that.

Play forward 40 turns, I guess we can leave this here for a week or when there are more than 3 submissions ;)
