I was looking back in the countless number of threads the other day and I started wondering if it was possible for Thunderfall to make it so really old topics get deleted automaticly say after page 20 or so, cause the way it is now we have layers upon layers of old threads that do nothing but take up space, I was thinking it might help reserve space, and clean up CivFanatics.
I know some people might say,

we might post in them some day
here at Civ fanatics the thread is very hard to revive if it even goes to the second page, so yea you really will post in the threads on the sixty-ninth page
noone even bothers to post in old topics and if they do come back the bringer backer is just asked why? and the thread dies again faster.

but your deleting memorys
no memory's are in your head not your computer, If you NEED some thing to help your memory they cant be that good of memorys to start with.

But then you'd have to change your title... And besides, it's a good record for building cases against each other or something...

The Cases are usually already tried when the Threads are made ;)
and hey I got a better title for after this its.

Vanilla/Ice * Ice/Cube=VC

Im just wonder how many people actually get this title  but they should its simple math.

Spycatcher, the DRA link in your Sig block returns a 404 error from Lycos (page not valid)....

BTW, about auto-delete.... I'd never give the computer an auto-delete type of function on an active database... too many things can foul up. Database storage is not a problem from what I've seen TF post, and it seems the index method works pretty well. The Search is handy for finding threads and posts buried in the database, though I wish it would take 4-character searches instead of 5. :)

Auto-deletion on an active forum is a bad idea. Especially for people like Starlifter, who like to revive half-year old threads. ;)

If anything, then an auto-archivation system would be better. Take old threads from the visible database, but leave them there to be searched through with the search function. :yeah:

After all we have so much information here, everyone can still discover something he didn´t know about the games in ancient and old threads.
:D

On some forums I've been at before (read: one forum I've been to before) the moderators manually pruned forums by announcing that they were going to delete threads that hadn't been replied to since a certain date. Users would bump topics they would want to keep, but that wouldn't work here at CFC, seeing as this forum had a policy of making absolutely sure NOT to start a new thread if there was already one (even if it was very old), while here we make them just so not to revive old threads

Lucky's idea is better; anything can go if we set it on auto for a large board like this. Anyway, TF isn't complaining, so it's not really a problem yet. ;)

Bad idea: Would reduce my post count. ;)

Seen fr that perspective, maybe it's a good idea since it'd reduce PH's postcount. :p Anyway, who cares about your postcount? :p :D

I guess only me....and not all that much anymore, just being goofy. :p

No, archive them so they can still be searched, but not dug up from two years ago.

Would it be possible to auto-close old threads? Instead of deleting them and depriving people of info contained therein (and PH's postcount), it would leave the posts there for all to see, but nobody would be able to revive them. Possible or not?

I agree. Personally I often look in old threads for information, so I won't have them deleted. But to prevent reviving of threads an auto-close would be a good solution.

The auto-close seems like a good idea.... after some period, say 6 months (maybe even 3), a thread would be auto-closed. It would take approval (e.g., a member request, then intervention) by the Mod(s) or TF to reopen a closed thread.... this has a big advantage in that newbies who really don't know any better could not drag up old threads.... but old threads could still be quoted and referenced (lots of my posts use hyperlinks to a year or more ago for reference, but I hesitate at times because it might make some people think that they should reply in those old threads).

So I really favor the auto-close. And I just talked myself into the 3-month cutoff.

Deleting database content is not a good idea, unless the indexing system begins to malfunction due to size (and the quantities CFC has should be nowhere near that limit!).

Auto-delete is a good Idea in theory but in practice you might end up with the post off your back deleted!
Im more for a Auto-Close. they can be reopened ;)

Auto close sounds good to me. I get tired of seeing these old threads brought out by certain people and reading through a dozen or so posts before noticing that it says 2000, or 2001.
